Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

I really like this even though I'm not normally into either romantic or musical comedy. It's got a similar type of humour to shows like 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt etc. And some of the songs are catchy as hell

I loved 30 Rock and like Kimmy Schmidt so I'm trying with this. There are good and interesting moments but, man, a couple of episodes in, I find this protagonist so completely unsympathetic. I think Greg is the only character I like at all. The rapper's apologies in the first episode were hilarious, though.

See I think the unvarnished hatefulness of Greg is one of the things that's hardest to take about the show; I mean, it's kind of real, but also kind of awful to watch

I mean, what's not to hate about the characters Greg has to interact with?

I'll give them more of a chance, though.

The first couple were good but all the characters are unbearable and it gets old so fast because NOTHING happens.

Paula is the worst kind of enabler but, yeah, enjoying it enough to still watch.

all I ask for is a really good song every 3-4 episodes. I like how Bloom and Adam Schlesinger's sensibilities interact.

After about 5 eps I was kind of agreeing with ENBB because nothing happens and the characters kind of get unbearable and Josh is so nothingy but now I like it again because the jokes are good and I love the songs so much. Even if there's the odd dud one there's still a pretty good hit rate. Plus lots of funny little recurring jokes.

Yeah it's just returned. I just found it on Pirate Bay. Hadn't seen when the prevous season actually ebnded so was surprised it came back so fast. Well. Cool.
Now hope there's more Broad City before too long too.

Yes! This show just took the piss out of my least-favourite trope: when a man buys sexy clothes for a woman and they fit perfectly. Seen in everything from Gilmore Girls to the Handmaid's Tale. Thank you, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

I don't think it's bad but it's kind of in a weird place after the "I Never Want to See Josh Again" ep. Dealing with some of the mental illness-related stuff that's been an undercurrent in the show is maybe making it less consistently funny but I'm hoping it resets a little after the break.

I still love this show. Nathaniel's songs have been uniformly fantastic; he is an excellent addition to the cast. White Josh is always great. And when Trent reappeared and did his own BLAM!, I laughed a lot.

I admit I tried to get back into this but I really hated the big number that opened this season so I stopped there. I should give it a shot again huh

I've had problems with my mental health for a long time (not BPD though) and I've got to say that this show deals with these issues better than any other comedy I've seen

Catching up on S3 at the moment - it's definitely less funny, but it couldn't have gone on eliding* Rebecca's mental illness and the damage / displacement that Paula's doing to her own life much longer. Hopefully it can come out of treatment-related or life-evaluating plots for various characters and find new paths for them, but being so desperately marginal a show must make it hard to invest in long-term plotting.

*or: not that the creators or the text did, but that the audience was asked to accept the tension and stay invested with the protagonists for the sake of laughs and songs, while that tension kept building. Valencia going from being the only person who saw Rebecca for what she was, to an accepting friend & also an actual nicer person, is the biggest fumble / "oh just go with it, it's a sitcom" that they've pulled

It is one of the struggles that I've always had with the show, its juxtaposition of pretty horrible behaviour with humour and whimsy. That's a combination that can curdle in the wrong hands (see Three Billboards, for example), but I think Crazy Ex-Girlfriend just about walks the right line. I partly think this because the show often does address things when they come to a head, and I partly think it because if one of those male anti-heroes from one of those prestige AMC shows was doing this stuff and ruining the lives of everyone around him, everyone would think he was dark and fascinating.

Yes, I miss Valencia as a worthy antagonist. She has been defanged to the character's detriment.
