Most of those are in the "good" category: striking moments, well-directed performance. I guess I'll choose Take Shelter.

rewatched Take Shelter on Saturday night during a storm. Definitely stands up.

Nichols will “write and direct a new version of Alien Nation, the 1988 science fiction thriller that took the mismatched buddy cop concept to the extreme. The original starred James Caan as a racist cop who is forced to team with a member of an alien race which came to Earth when a ship carrying 300,000 enslaved aliens crashed, with the newcomers assimilating in Los Angeles.”

I thoroughly enjoyed Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter + Mud. Thought the last one was serious sub JJ abrams tv series level shite.

calzino, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 22:17 (nine years ago)

'mud' was so tepid and bloated. more like meh'd. despite having little kids talking about touching titties and stuff it had this irritating cloying hallmark movie quality. mcconaughey was great but his character was so phonily conceived. it was like he was pete's dragon or something. it also kinda reminded me of:

I haven't seen Mud, but Take Shelter is the only one of his films to date that I would call successful. As I said when I watched it last week, Midnight Special is a bit of a mismatch of tone and content. Shotgun Stories, I thought, was a pile of Amer-indie cliches--the "white trash" schtick was laid on so thick in that film that I honestly laughed at the film at certain points. I'm at a complete loss to understand what anyone saw in that one.

havent yet seen midnight special or loving obv, mud worked for me, didnt feel contrived; also like shotgun stories a lot, and take shelter slightly less than those 2

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 23:54 (nine years ago)

i liked Mud a lot but i'll admit that a good portion of my affection might have just been Nichols totally nailing that MS Delta river town vibe like whoa

what mud actually reminded me of was a modernized huck finn, the worst part is prob reese witherspoon but she doesnt like ruin it

Loving was solid, sometimes more than that.

Midnight Special easily the worst of the first four, an ill-conceived Spielberg hommage.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

Agreed in that MS doesn't quite work, probably because it forgets that the Spielberg films it is paying homage to were fun.

I still think Shotgun Stories is worse, though. I actually laughed out loud at certain points during that film's Amerindie affectations. I really don't understand the solid reputation it holds.

I like Jeff Nichols, but I saw the trailer for "The Bikeriders," and despite the great cast (even think I saw Will Oldham in it) it looks corny and super-cliched.

Are they supposed to be doing Chicago accents?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 20:24 (one year ago)

This trailer has been playing endlessly at my local Alamo and I get more annoyed with it every time I see it.

I really liked it

Mmm, can’t say I did. I didn’t hate it but it didn’t really land outside of moments.
