I still haven't seen hardly anything from this era but it seems to be held in high regard, if only for the Val Lewton films (which mostly fall within this range of dates).

The Lewtons are all good ... the creepy Satanists in The Seventh Victim almost get my vote, but I went with Isle of the Dead for its atmosphere and Karloff delivering a strong performance in spite of Harpo Marx hair.

I like the Lewtons and voted for Cat People. The Leopard Man is probably the weakest, but it does have a disturbing death scene.

The Mummy sequels were cheapies and the last one, The Mummy's Curse, is terrible. It's set on that one bijou backlot set and it makes stupid continuity mistakes. If you follow the timeline of the series, it should be set in the 1990s.

Where in gay hell is The Curse of the Cat People? It counts as much as a lot of these titles.

also missing: The Body Snatcher

Oh what the christ. I thought I at least captured all of the Lewtons. Thanks, Wikipedia!

Ape Man is total garbage. I still have a bunch of Lewton films to see. The box sets are a tad expensive. Some of them don't include Mademoiselle Fifi because I don't think it's a horror or mystery.
Cat People recently got a new disc but I don't know if it's part of a series and I don't like the films enough for individual fancy releases.

I voted I Walked With A Zombie but Curse Of The Cat People is my favourite of the ones I've seen.

Curse of the Cat People is more of a fairy tale/fantasy though, not horror

obviously one of the Lewtons, i'd have to rewatch

I've only seen the Lewtons from this list, and I voted Cat People, but I would have also thrown my vote towards Curse if it'd been an option.

I notice the list only has one of the six Lon Chaney Jr. "Inner Sanctum" series of films (1943-1945), namely Weird Woman, but that's probably fair since they have more of a mystery feel to them, regardless of how they were advertised. Plus they're mostly pretty bad

I'm happy enough voting for the original Cat People. I thought there might be something more terrifying on the list but nothing, um, jumps out at me

I still haven't seen lots of these but Dead Of Night is one of my alltime faves.

calzino, Thursday, 22 September 2016 17:55 (nine years ago)

on first viewing Dead of Night scared me much more than any of the Lewtons

Brad C., Thursday, 22 September 2016 17:58 (nine years ago)

That isn't commercially available, is it? I've been on the lookout?

Suddenly...Soup! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 22 September 2016 18:14 (nine years ago)

It's been on dvd a long while in the UK at least.
