I think the problem with cats in any media is that actual cats are readily available and far more meaningful IRL than when instanced by technology, be that pen, camera or prose.

I can look at my cat right now, hidden in darkness, asleep, and he's already funnier and more important than all of the nominees in this poll.

cliff sterrett drew a "topper" strip for polly and her pals (similar to sappo and thimble theater) called dot and dash, about a cat and dog, which i think was prob a big influence on mutts:

it's kind of an unfair contest since almost all of the other strips (excepting mutts, which is pretty good, and le chat and bogart which i'm not familiar with) are terrible.

(there are very many structural, content, and business-model-related reasons that they were not in newspapers, but that's not what he asked / amused me two years ago)
