Right at the cusp of Bill you see huge sympathy for anti-government whites. Then Bush wars all over the damn place and it's gone. I assumed the resurgence would happen during Obama. With Bannon getting his Trump due, what comes next?

To be fair, bitherism was the sign of it coming back. As someone who works in immigration this article chills me to the bone: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/10/undercover-border-militia-immigration-bauer

I'm mostly interested in tracing a modern history of white supremacist/anti-government sentiment in the U.S. I think a lot of the paranoia that's exploded with the rise of dubious internet 'news' sites like Breitbart can be traced back a lot farther than the Obama administration. What's weird, is that the Bush-era neocon endless war seemed to put that stuff on hold for a while.

has there ever not been that subculture in the states, is it not at least an explicit presence post civil war, etc? or am i missing subtleties?

sure, the roots go way back. but i think a lot of the difficulty people have in pinning down the economic ideologies of so-called Trump voters is that, at the end of the day, that's not what they care about. afaict, the tea party's only ideology was distrust of the federal government. people like cliven bundy are just like randy weaver. threatening to shut down gun shows mobilizes people. they're also traditionally where far-right, white nationalist information was shared. so i think the modern incarnation has a lot of current political relevance.

six years pass...

watched the new netflix documentary last night. really encapsulates everything that is so awful about netflix: throw an insane amount of money at a project, get incredible footage, secure some of the most important interview subjects...end up with the most neutered copaganda imaginable. really a shame
