It “has received a two-season commitment in a $160 million deal” from Amazon and The Weinstein Company. “Each season will consist of eight episodes, all written and directed by Russell. Details about the show are sketchy, but we hear it is a mafia crime series.”

And it was from a period where Amazon developed a ton of major partnerships before its head of original programming got ousted.

Everything bad you've heard about Amsterdam is probably true. Which is a pity, because I would love to see a sober and thorough assessment of The Business Plot.

Based on a projected global gross of $35M, an estimated $70M global P&A spend — which I’m told is the bare minimum for a big pic like this — backstopped by Regency, Amsterdam after all home ancillaries will lose around $100M ($97M to be exact).

This has got to be one of the best cast, worst performing movie of all time. Christian Bale (six Oscar noms), Margot Robbie (two Oscar noms), John David Washington, Chris Rock, Rami Malek (one Oscar win), Zoe Saldaña, Robert De Niro (eight noms, two wins), Mike Myers, Anya Taylor-Joy, Taylor Swift, Michael Shannon (two noms), Timothy Fucking Olyphant, Ed Begley Jr. ... flop.

And yeah, from a five time nominated writer/director. And I forgot Bale is a winner, too, and of course three of Russell's films themselves were nominated for best picture. Sure, Academy Awards mean shit, but you'd think they'd at least mean something in aggregate.

Despite all the star power involved, I’m told that’s not the reason Amsterdam was so expensive. Actors showed up because they wanted to work with Russell, some even working for scale. This despite noteworthy conflicts the intense Russell has had over the years with actors including George Clooney, Lily Tomlin and Amy Adams. Bale wanted to make this movie and mapped out the script with Russell over five years of diner meals. I hear Bale got paid under his normal rate of $5M. Oscar winner Malek received a six-figure payday. No one was making any kind of crazy demands, and above-the-line costs repped around 20% of the entire budget. Ultimately, no one is getting any bonuses from a cash-breakeven shared pool as the pic is in the red.

I don't know if they count as stars in the "can open a movie" sense (clearly not, lol), but at least a few of those folks are still probably household names.

The bigger gamble in a way is hyping the theatrical release rather than doing what the star-studded Don't Look Up did, with a super-quiet early-December release and a gigantic streaming launch on Christmas Day.

reminds me of seeing Woody Allens student-film-level pile of dogshit Whatever Works, a film so inept that I remember in many of the scenes you could see the actors visibly reacting to having just heard "action", moving their head to find their eyeline, saying their lines, then visibly waiting for "cut"

they go back to acting with the same level of nigh-camp heightenedness as the rest of the movie, they stop acting like stilted robots being fed lines through earpieces
