Not saying that the Internet is definitely causing more harm than good.

I just want to know when you first began to wonder if it was.

For years I found all criticism of the internet overblown, and the positives clearly outweighed the negatives. It wasn't until Snowden's revelations in 2013 that I started to question this assumption.

In 2016 the bad seems to plainly outweigh the good.

never worried about this, never likely to worry about this. the printing press had the odd negative side effect too.

Who keeps track of such thoughts in relation to a calendar? I do recall using the following sig for my newsgroup postings back in circa 1995-96:

"Thanks to the internet misinformation now travels faster than ever before!"

Some college instructor somewhere saw this and emailed me to ask my permission to use in his classroom materials. I replied that as far as I was concerned everything I posted to newsgroups was in the public domain, but thanks for asking.

ARPANET development began with two network nodes which were interconnected between the Network Measurement Center at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science directed by Leonard Kleinrock, and the NLS system at SRI International (SRI) by Douglas Engelbart in Menlo Park, California, on 29 October 1969.[22] On 30 October 1969 Douglas Englebert sent a message entitled "Are we doing more harm than good?" On 1 November Engelbart posted a cartoon of a smirking anthropomorphized frog dressed as a member of the SS [25]

On 2 November Engelbart went on to share with Kleinrock lurid allegations of criminality against a first-semester female Yale law student [25]

Yeah it was really fucked up. I'll never forget that. Don't you remember the first couple days after protests broke out? No media was covering it, and things were disappearing off social media. I was watching a stream of someone with a GoPro at a protest that night facing the line of militarized police & tanks ostensibly bought and outfitted for combat in the Middle East being deployed on Americans in our own country. I sorta lost it that night. It was really fucked up
