Pie vs. Cake

There have been threads on this topic, but the matter has not been put to a vote...until now! Inspired by a Twitter follow who came down hard on the cake side of things, as did many of her followers. Food poll fiends of ILE, I put the question to you: cake, or pie?

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 16:41 (eight years ago)

Cake, easily. Not much of a tradition for dessert pies where I'm from, but whenever I eat one, I regret my choice and gaze longingly towards the cakes. Lack of tradition yields lack of quality, perhaps.

That said, dinner pies >>>>>>>>>>> smörgåstårta. Are there other dinner cakes? Aspic, sorta, I guess?

Rimsky-Koskenkorva (Øystein), Thursday, 15 December 2016 16:46 (eight years ago)

I think limiting the realm of "dinner cake/pie" to the savory ones is a mistake

on one hand, most pastry is awful, on the other, savoury always beats sweet and cakes are barely even food

my vote btw is for pie because I am a fucking glutton. there's no other way to describe me, I like to eat and eat. and I like foods I can eat a lot of. cake, no matter how good it is, I'm good after one piece. especially if it's a rich frosting. the frosting will knock me out. pie, line up half a dozen of them fuckers, I will eat them in sequence and put a bullet between your eyes if you try to sneak a piece from one of the not-in-use pies while I'm busy. cake is lovely, but at the end of the day, it cannot supply me with the quantity I need.

pie is a homeomorphism of pizza in the Four Foods Theory

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:21 (eight years ago)

The early Greeks considered it a cake. Some modern authors point to the presence of many eggs, the sole source of leavening, as proof that it is a torte. Still others claim that the separate crust, the soft filling, and the absence of flour prove that it is a custard pie.[12]

xps: if cheesecake is pie that's totally not fair.

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:29 (eight years ago)

if pizza is allowed as pie, pie will wipe the floor with cake. or something else a bit less disgusting sounding.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:30 (eight years ago)

not necessarily, if pizza is allowed as pie then it stands to reason that gin & tonic can be allowed as cake and then it's all to play for again

banfred bann (wins), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:32 (eight years ago)

i think for this poll we are supposed to consider the traditional dessert pie, excluding pizza, cheesecake, savoury pies, etc. otherwise putting it up against cake makes less sense.

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:32 (eight years ago)

cheesecake is probably the grayest area here

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:33 (eight years ago)

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:44 (eight years ago)

im assuming this is referring to dessert pies and dessert cakes so does not encompass fatayer/samosas/empanadas vs spanish tortillas. savoury pies vs savoury cakes is difficult. sweet pies vs sweet cakes is easy, clear pies is the answer

marcos, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:44 (eight years ago)

imo pizza is very tricky because its crust has yeast. proper cakes and pies really don't, I think -- pie crust, savory or sweet, is flour & shortening whether it's butter or lard or vegetable shortening. cakes that rise are muffins or biscuits. pizza really kinda is just the perfection of savory pie but in my view can only enter a pie vs. cake poll on somewhat false pretenses

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:45 (eight years ago)

agree that leavening is disqualifying here but in a grand taxonomy of food pizza is clearly in the same branch as pie

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:47 (eight years ago)

chocolate bourbon pecan pie is the apex dessert btw

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:47 (eight years ago)

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:48 (eight years ago)

that does sound good

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:50 (eight years ago)

The Dutch Apple Pie does look like a pie! It has the bottom bit and the crumble makes a kind of lid, so it's more pie-like to me than tart type things.

The 'kitchn' link pretty much firms up the true definition, but I still maintain the average (British) person would expect both top and bottom crusts on something claiming to be a pie. Meaning is use and all that.

emil.y, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 22:18 (eight years ago)

because at Christmas, you eat cake

That is more than fair. Cake can have its day, just as every dog has its day.

i will readily admit that i could not deny bread or banana pudding on any day

surm, Saturday, 24 December 2016 19:21 (eight years ago)

Don't even start a debate as to what is or is not a pudding.

That said, I just baked a dozen individual sticky toffee puddings topped with kumquats that counter the sweetness. Just waiting to be doused with toffee sauce and put under the broiler.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 December 2016 19:53 (eight years ago)

Should say I also made an annoyingly elaborate 4-layer boozy rum cake (took three days!). And my wife made a cheesecake. Or cream cheese pie, if you prefer.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 December 2016 19:54 (eight years ago)

RUM CAKE omg

surm, Saturday, 24 December 2016 20:09 (eight years ago)

It's truly insane. Four-layer sponge cake soaked with rum syrup, with layers of rum-spiked cream in between and around the whole pile of cakes, then coated with a rum-spiked whipped cream. In total: 14 eggs, but no butter!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 December 2016 20:26 (eight years ago)

damnnnn!!! jealous.

surm, Saturday, 24 December 2016 20:34 (eight years ago)

I think my wife is making a chocolate bourbon pecan pie for tomorrow's dessert festivities. At least I heard the idea floated and now it better happen otherwise a bunch of presents are going straight into the fireplace.

I seem to hear in my mind the faraway voice of an unknown genius who is saying:

"Hmmm. Lovely. Could anything be better than this pecan pie? (inspiration hits like a ton of bricks) Wait! I know! A bourbon pecan pie! But wait! Dare I lift my eyes yet higher, where on yonder heights I seem to see...yes! (swoons briefly) A chocolate bourbon pecan pie!"

At which point the owner of the voice expires in delight and a welter of exclamation points.

pecan pie + lemon meringue are my 2 pies
