Poll: Milk Placement

This thread is always a good reminder of that weird thing about human nature where you think it's going to be the big, heavy, fraught shit that's going to cause a shitstorm of an argument when actually it's just things like, why did you put the milk in on the right side of the refrigerator when we ALWAYS put it on the left?!?

― My Lunch Is Older Than Your Lunch (Old Lunch)

Where do you place the container of milk in your refrigerator?

NB: 'Right' and 'left' refer to the perspective of the person facing the refrigerator.

Door, obviously.

The Doug Walters of Crime (Tom D.), Friday, 16 December 2016 18:54 (eight years ago)

i do not have a designated place for the milk. it will always vary depending on what else is in the fridge.

sarahell, Friday, 16 December 2016 18:59 (eight years ago)

Our refrigerator door has the handle placed upon the left side and the door swings open left-to-right, so that the left side of the top shelf is the most accessible placement for any item. In our house, the milk goes there. This is a bit odd, because we do not drink much milk.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Friday, 16 December 2016 18:59 (eight years ago)

you can say i have an intersectional approach to milk placement

sarahell, Friday, 16 December 2016 18:59 (eight years ago)

milk should go in the coldest part of the fridge and/or closest to the sweetest and/or unscented items

F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 16 December 2016 19:20 (eight years ago)

CLEARLY it goes on the left. CLEARLY. I mean, how could I ever have been so stupid, and can you ever forgive me for my stupidity? Maybe next time the milk can go DIRECTLY IN THE TRASH.

santa what wood like to eat when you to house on christmas eve (Old Lunch), Friday, 16 December 2016 19:21 (eight years ago)

milk should go in the coldest part of the fridge

The door is usually the warmest part of a fridge.

How is milk being put on a shelf? What kind of palatial fridges do you people have?

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 16 December 2016 19:29 (eight years ago)

right

so elsewhere:

bottom left, right above the fruits and next to sweet/unscented stuff

varies on what type of fridge you have tho

fridges don't have shelves in the UK?

sarahell, Friday, 16 December 2016 20:37 (eight years ago)

In the uk, milk is not refrigerated and "shelf" refers to male pattern baldness

No milk. It's been replaced by yogurt for cereal, and sometimes half-and-half for coffee and cooking.

milk is so disgusting

flappy bird, Friday, 16 December 2016 22:30 (eight years ago)

but the question is where you do (or do not) place said milk in your refrigerator. not about your feelings regarding its relative merits as a foodstuff.

our current fridge is weird where the top shelf is real narrow and doesn't hold tall things, so the milk goes on the second shelf - usually on the right but sometimes the middle. I have never fought about milk position -- now percentage of milkfat, though, that's something to shed blood over.

I haven't drank milk in over 20 years, makes little sense to digest something that's meant for another animal's babies.

i have opinions about milk but not the placement of milk but i nonetheless opened this thread and typed a response into it

loudmouth darraghmac ween (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 December 2016 10:03 (eight years ago)

Our beverage shelf is second from the top and is set up to be tall enough to accomodate a half-gallon of milk. Milk currently on the left side.

Store milk and other dairy products in the refrigerator below 40°F, but never store milk in the refrigerator door where it is susceptible to warmer air from opening and closing the door.

well, commercially grown sprouts have been the culprit in more than one salmonella outbreak, so it could be considered a fair question.

typical ilx result ie a travesty

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 25 December 2016 19:10 (eight years ago)

to me the sizable plurality for "on the door" simply means few ixors buy milk in any quantity above a liter. when you think of the ilx demographics this makes some sense.

We're half gallon people

The beaver is not the bad guy (El Tomboto), Sunday, 25 December 2016 20:15 (eight years ago)

Gallon of milk in the door, up-next gallon sitting on the shelf in the back and to the right. I think the warmth of the door area is going to affect your milk life only if you take a really long time to go through a gallon of milk.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 25 December 2016 21:14 (eight years ago)

a refrigerator door compartment of such vasty depth as to accommodate a full gallon of milk? you've broken my imagination.

Don't generally have milk, only if expecting houseguests or plumber, in which case, a single pint of supermarket semi-skimmed in the fridge door - probably the bottom door shelf but this is a useful space for taller bottles so it may get evicted to the middle door shelf, or mid/top shelf of main fridge

Have just been zapping all the bits of the fridge with a laser thermometer and can report that the middle/upper parts of our fridge door are alarmingly not-cold so perhaps this is not the best place for dairy

(sudden interest in fridge temperatures because we thought the fridge had died yesterday, but it was just having a little trouble with having 3kg of still slightly warm turkey shoved in)
