seriously, check out these chairs

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2016 19:15 (eight years ago) link

i know it's kind of gimmicky, but i like the decorative US Leisure Compass chair. but for everyday gatherings in the grass i certainly wouldn't mind a quad pack of Lawnware Cafe Vienna Chairs

The suspense is killing me. I may not get there with you, but I've made my children vow to login in and view the poll results.

#6 for me. Syroco really gives good chair.

This video made me cry. I haven't chosen a favourite yet

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 16 December 2016 19:23 (eight years ago) link

None of the above. The correct answer is the U.S. Leisure Alpine Chair, which Target and Lowes used to sell and are the world's most incredibly comfortable cheap plastic chairs. Not available in white though; mine are beige or green.

Nice video. I went for #4 because it looks like a duck.

check out his youtube channel, Bryan Ropar's Plastic Chair World it's seriously amazing (h/t occasional ilxor nopower).

there's also a top 5, top 25, top 50, top 100, etc. he also has lots of other channels

Narrowed it down to 22, 18, 16, 15, 13, 8, 5, 4, 1.

This channel looks great. I will have to find out what type we have. Feeling guilty about them being covered in weeds right now.

In a dream world, 25 ilxors would make a short film about their favourite chair.

no way, i'll be 86 when the results roll in, and i am 100% sure ILX will still be up and running at that point

which reminds me, we need to do a quick fundraiser to pay for ilx for the next 53 years, just to be safe

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2016 19:43 (eight years ago) link

This makes me want to get into the plastic chair game.

how's life, Friday, 16 December 2016 19:43 (eight years ago) link

he says at the end of the video, in the description of the #1 ranked, groundbreaking Grosfillex Malaga Chair, that the company "wanted to bring the chair back but they lost the mold so unfortunately it will never be made again."

i am not an expert, but after watching Jurassic Park closely a few times over the years i believe that the mold is not lost, that in fact the mold IS the Grosfillex Malaga Chair, and that it could be brought back by a company or enterprising individual with the right mix of knowledge and technology.

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2016 19:49 (eight years ago) link

13 looks sad.

no single chair is as beautiful as all these chairs together living in harmony forever

nopower, Friday, 16 December 2016 20:05 (eight years ago) link

Karl:

the company "wanted to bring the chair back but they lost the mold so unfortunately it will never be made again." ... i believe that the mold is not lost, that in fact the mold IS the Grosfillex Malaga Chair,

Well, not exactly. The mold would have to be the inverse of the chair. That is, a mold would have a void the exact shape and size of the current chair. Which should actually be pretty easy since the chair is made of an easily melted plastic!

Something like the lost-wax method would be required but it shouldn't be that difficult.

do you think Bryan Ropar enjoys living in his Plastic Chair World?

or is it an unspeakable hell for which he has, over the years, developed the coping skills necessary to survive in it?

del griffith, Saturday, 31 December 2016 02:26 (eight years ago) link

When I saw the Capisa Lowback I was like, "Sweet!" but that's probably because all the preceding chairs were boringly similar

Btw dude, learn how to pronounce "Malaga" if you want to be a plastic chair authority

props to brimstead for repping for chairs of color

help! I remember reading an article online ≈ 5 years ago about an iconic white plastic chair that has played am important role in world history due to its cheapness and ubiquity and exportability. the article was illustrated with historical photos of the chair being sat upon by natural disaster victims and/or rocket launch spectators and/or banana republic dictators...or something along those lines. I'm not sure if the chairs in the photos were identical in design (and traceable to a specific manufacturer) or if they were variations on the generic white plastic chair form, but at any rate they were similar to the chairs in the thumbnail of the OP video. does anyone know what I'm talking about? there's a good chance that the article was mentioned on ilx, but it's a tough topic to search for.

schrute dwyte (unregistered), Sunday, 1 January 2017 03:23 (eight years ago) link

voted 23 but 5 or 8 also seem good and he makes a good case for 1 on historic significance. when this poll's results are tabulated, if one of those four is not the winner, i will donate one thousand dollars in the annual ilx fundraising drive.
