As part of my desultory series of polls on the domestic habits of ilxors (viz. Poll: Milk Placement, Your Bedsheets and These Changing Times: A poll, and [url=POLL: Do you wear a wristwatch?] POLL: Do You Wear a Wristwatch?), I enquire here about your filling of the kettle to boil.

I fill the kettle from:

I suppose I could have managed that BBcode a bit better.

I didn't think Americans had kettles.

Transform All Suffering Into Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 December 2016 18:29 (nine years ago)

So, it's the sixth option for you, then?

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 22 December 2016 18:30 (nine years ago)

I mix up the tap from day to day, not out of ambivalence but in the name of science. I meticulously record the tap that I use and the events of the rest of the day, both in my personal life and the broader life, and attempt to find connections between them. So far, I have p-value confirmation that when I use cold water I am more likely to get a haircut later that day, while hot water makes it less likely that a nyt article about space is published on the front page.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 22 December 2016 18:32 (nine years ago)

No, I'm not a disgusting savage is my option, but when I've visited in-laws they don't have kettles and I was told that wasn't a thing that exists in the US, if you want to boil water you put a cup in the microwave or boil it in a saucepan on the stove?! Perhaps I was misled, or they are just weirdos. Which might explain a few things I suppose.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 22 December 2016 18:35 (nine years ago)

All depends on how fast I want the brew. Usually though I want it asap and will indeed fill it with hot water from the tap, as the disgusting savage I am.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 December 2016 18:35 (nine years ago)

Cold water tap or death.

The Doug Walters of Crime (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 December 2016 18:36 (nine years ago)

Cold tap bc the hot water tap is slow and it comes out cold for the first 20 seconds anyway

JoeStork, Thursday, 22 December 2016 18:37 (nine years ago)

i grew up with the understanding that water from the hot tap was not for consumption. maybe with modern boilers it is not such a thing, idk, but i have yet to be inconvenienced by boiling cold water so i am ok sticking with how i was brung up

does the reverse osmosis drinking water tap draw water from the hot water pipes or the cold? there's your answer!

oh cold pipes i guess

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 20:45 (nine years ago)

I fill the kettle from the filter jug which in turn is filled from the cold tap. Our water is well hard.

kinder, Thursday, 22 December 2016 20:45 (nine years ago)

cold, because our mother drummed into us many fictions about mice sneaking into things and then dying and the hot water cylinder was known to be one of their most popular graveyards.

estela, Thursday, 22 December 2016 20:47 (nine years ago)

wow if my mom told me that i would have showered cold too

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 20:51 (nine years ago)

all the stories have giant loopholes, showering and dishwashing were never a concern. the last time i was there i was warned that rats are well-known for climbing into a house through the toilet plumbing.

estela, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:02 (nine years ago)

I use cold water because I was always told that hot water should never be used for cooking/drinking, but always wonder if I'm wasting valuable life time for no good reason

silverfish, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:21 (nine years ago)

It goes from the cold water tap into the brita filter bottle and thence to the fridge door (bottom right). It is from that container that the kettle is refilled when needed.

What Tom said, but with the addendum that my kettle is electrical and often ends up boiling/reboiling the water 3-5 times between fillings.

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:50 (nine years ago)

Why not?

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:53 (nine years ago)

because chemistry

bad for the taste of what you're brewing, bad for your kettle, bad for your health

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:53 (nine years ago)

the last time i was there i was warned that rats are well-known for climbing into a house through the toilet plumbing.

To derail my own thread, this happened to me when I was house-sitting in a fairly nice neighborhood of Portland. The rat emerged into the toilet bowl, scrambled out, then proceeded to leave a wet trail all over the kitchen floor until I could persuade it out the back door with a broom.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:54 (nine years ago)

"Because chemistry". Ok...

What changes in water after cooking it that makes it different than the initial water you cooked?

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:54 (nine years ago)

concentration of dissolved species

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:55 (nine years ago)

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:55 (nine years ago)

I don't even know what dissolved species are. Just googled 'cook water again' in my language and everything that comes up is that it's a hoax (over here), snopes like sites etc. I'm aware I'm fortunate to live somewhere where tap water is completely ok though, don't know if that a makes a difference or not.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 December 2016 22:00 (nine years ago)

you're basically distilling it into mineral water
not good mineral water

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Thursday, 22 December 2016 22:00 (nine years ago)

*a hoax that it wouldn't be ok, I meant xp

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 22 December 2016 22:00 (nine years ago)

yes it makes a difference if the water is good or bad to start. if it was distilled water it would make no difference (unless stuff from the kettle was leaching into the water but that's a different issue)

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 22:23 (nine years ago)

feel free to ignore my advice, it's just that my tap water is really shitty so i'm fussy about the kettle

the late great, Thursday, 22 December 2016 22:25 (nine years ago)

the last time i was there i was warned that rats are well-known for climbing into a house through the toilet plumbing.

My dad is one of these doomsayers too. According to him, you should never drink straight out of a can, because rats climb around on them in the store rooms of shops and pubs. And you should never eat berries straight off the bush either, because also rats.

cold water tap mostly but hot if i need boiling water STAT

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 22 December 2016 22:37 (nine years ago)

In America kettles take forever to boil btw
If you are in the UK I can recommend Russell Hobbs Buckingham for a quiet but speedy boil
Tea made from urns that reboil water a million times a day i.e. what all offices used to have = DUD

While I'm here can any UKer recommend a decaff builders' tea that isn't minging? Have tried Clipper and it's not very nice.

I buy 5-gallon jugs of water. They're pretty much room temp. Fill up my pyrex measuring cup from those, then stick it in the microwave for a few.

I drank from the hot water tap. I drank from the hot water tap IN YOUR HOUSE iirc.

Idk this all seems p silly to me, never realised dece hot water is so hard to come by in ~the west~. All this mostly reminds me of my ex gf (UK, Yorkshire, bad plumbing) who believed shouting at water contaminated it or made it foul. Or made little water babby cry. Won't say it's the reason we broke up but hey ho.

lol my mother is an espouser of the rats on cans theory as well. also my little sister came home and incredulously reported that her friend's fusspot mother insisted on washing bananas before peeling them, which created a vision of rats dancing and pooping on them down at the docks, so the banana washing commenced. not by anyone else in the family though.

I could never get used to that London hard water, especially on a hangover morning and needing immediate hydration. I think the water supply we have in Yorkshire is probably 2nd best to Manchester's which mostly comes from the Lake District and is probably better than some bottled water brands.

calzino, Friday, 23 December 2016 15:07 (nine years ago)

For a few months about 20 years ago I shared a grotty bedsit in Dublin which must've had a nest of house spiders in its hot water tank because every time I took a bath spider legs would come out of the hot tap and I'd have to spend a few minutes picking them out of the water or bathe in spider remains. Good thing it was autumn because I'd've been pretty smelly otherwise.
