"I have a draft of volume 2, subtitled Waiting for Hitler. I cut 300 pages out of volume 1 before publication (I know this seems unimaginable), even though it felt like sacrificing a limb. I’m going through the same process with volume 2. I have so many discoveries, so many set pieces, but some have to go or the reader will be bludgeoned to death. Then there is volume 3. If it only takes me 5 or 6 years I would be very happy. I might need a year or so off in psychological rehabilitation. The intimacy with this regime is thrilling for the study of power, but it’s a tragic, brutal history."

Stop pissing about and get Vol 2 out sharpish, Kotkin.

Apparently there's a Leninist in the White House, so Bolshevism has won after all.

Just finished reading Isaac Deutscher's 'Stalin' and - although I'm now in no rush to read it - would like to eventually get around to the Kotkin book. While Deutscher's has its flaws (in large part to the lack of available info at the time), it must have been something to read on its release in 1948 (or around then), especially as he had been on such close personal terms with so many in the 1917 revolution and early Soviet Union.

Not sure this is the place to ask, but has anyone read Andrei Bely's 'Petersburg'? Unintentionally, I've decided to take a deeper dive into Russian history/literature this year, it seems.
