Any film is eligible that was released theatrically in 2016, so if you want to count festivals or rep screenings than have at it.

Ballots can be up to 25 films, weighted, with normal rules applying. Please send a minimum of five films on your ballot. No formatting guidelines but please use English titles where possible.

Never opened here.

There was one gigantic masterpiece, Arabian Nights, but it already placed last year. Still voting for it this time.

And we're going to see both New Lonergan and Toni Erdmann before voting, so that could change things

Saw new Lonergan today. It's fine but mostly made me think about how much I hate oscar-season... Toni Erdmann should place very highly, hopefully.

I'm hoping to see A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery and Sieranevada before voting ends. That's probably the ones I expect the most out of. And get a rewatch of Scarred Hearts might move it up a couple places. Great, great film.

Probably will vote for "Certain Women" but I haven't seen "Elle" yet...

I've got about five movies I can actually see in the time left to catch up on. No chance for Right Now, Wrong Then, it seems.

I'm going to rewatch Right Now, Wrong Then and 20th Century Women, both of which six weeks seemed determinedly OK. Toni Erdmann too.

Right Now, Wrong Then has some of the best Hong scenes, but it felt much more sad than it should be to me, I think. I mostly admire how he steadfastly creates the same film over and over and over, but at certain points here it felt really sad and desperate. That was quite probably mostly me, but still.

Is it actually available anywhere?

Well... you know... it's available 'places'. You know... those places... I did see one of the few cinema screenings it got here, though. But yeah, it's available.

The thing with the Hong film is...you have to like the movie he shows the first time.

That aside a few notes on what has taken place on this thread so far:

- Thank you Gukbe for doing this.
- No one apart from Frederik has surely seen A Quiet Passion.
- No one apart from LJ thinks Arabian Nights is a 'gigantic masterpiece' (Trump-like hyperbole there).

Ballot:

- I'll get to watch Toni Erdmann and Cameraperson before I get to cast my vote.
- I'll try and source a copy of Cemetery of Splendour between now and then - never got around to it.
- I'll put Manoel de Oliveira's Visit or Memories and Confessions very high-up on my list - but it got one screening here that I know of and saw nothing on the review front. But please vote if you have (and loved it, and if you haven't what's wrong with you) and hopefully we'll get it in at the bottom end of the countdown.

These films, by design, were the v definition of 'curate's eggs'. But yes, even 'minor masterpiece' would be on the generous side.

I think Arabian Nights is a masterpiece. Think it was top 3 on my ballot last year.

And I know I'm not the only one to have seen A Quiet Passion. Also, isn't there a uk-faction that will root for it?

Cemetery of Splendour is on US Netflix so it must be relatively easy to source. Aradian Nights as well, for that matter.

Also available on DVD/Blu-Ray in the UK, and can be rented from Amazon Love Film.

I saw Arabian Nights in Feb 2016, slightly in advance of its UK cinema release, so I think it absolutely qualifies for this poll.

I couldn't vote for it in the end - it was just too much and yet not enough.

heh I checked my ballot for last year and it turns out I didn't vote for it so I guess I saw it around March time? So hard to keep track... Had I seen it in time I def would have voted it in the 2015 poll and it would have done a bit better, doesn't sound like its chances of getting in this year are great but I'll prob vote for it idk

Just watched Panique au village: La Rentrée des classes (A Town Called Panic: Back to School) - only 26 minutes this time but every bit as hilarious and brilliant as the 2009 film :) Belgium's answer to Aardman do it again

Will Puiu's Sieranevada get anglo-saxon release in 2017, or has it already been released? Because I saw it last saturday, it's masterful, and in top three of the year, or thereabout.

Because of work etc I'll do some tomorrow night and Wednesday night (or late afternoon, early evening for the US and a bit later on for those across the pond), and I'll do the top 20 at a more reasonable time on Thursday as I'm off that day. 26 ballots in total, which is one more than last year, so thanks everybody!

Yeah it's fine, granny was hospitalised with signs of heart failure - not great but she's going strong for 87. I stayed with her over the weekend after she was discharged just in case, did end up watching a few films but wasn't gonna try and convince her to sit thru the assassin or I am the pretty thing that lives in the house so I could catch up for this!

as for the films...well, yeah, there was loads of stuff we didn't get around to (for less urgent reasons) either...hopefully it'll all even itself out in the rollout

Alright, so work ran late and I've just now started to pull images together. Because I'm starting so late and the Europeans are probably heading to bed shortly, I'll expand the countdown and throw out 60-41 tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I'll start a few hours earlier, and on Thursday the top 20 will be rolled out at a reasonable time.

what is the general consensus as to Koreeda's best film? I just saw After Life for the first time this week. It was very odd but interesting

After-Life is still my favourite! So earnest and frequently hilarious. Those talking heads-style performances are excellent.

The Club probably my favorite Larrain, along with Jackie. Hm, tough choice, actually. Consider Club a 2015 release, though, it managed to come out in Danish cinemas in the fall.

After Life is the best Kore-eda, by far, imo. Such a unique creation. Maborosi and Distance also very good, and after that there's a drop in quality, though many of them are fine. Still Walking probably more than that. Our Little Sister fine as well, but I would have voted for Sweet Bean by Naomi Kawase for my feel-good Japanese film of the year.

I really liked Nobody Knows as well.

I was crazy about The Club at the time, but over the year it sunk further and further in my estimation. Would need to see it again to gauge my feelings properly, but it did make it onto my ballot. I'm cool with massive tonal shifts
