Also: who was thrown under the bus and did they deserve it?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:06 (eight years ago)

this seems like a good idea

I hope so

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:07 (eight years ago)

Surprised there wasn't already such a thread.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:07 (eight years ago)

were you really, though

(The caption: “fine dining.”) (DJP), Friday, 20 January 2017 18:10 (eight years ago)

Uhhh. How about go fuck yourself?

emil.y, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:11 (eight years ago)

(Not you, DJP)

emil.y, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:11 (eight years ago)

Aren't these threads always about looking for good stuff? People don't want to find good feminist writers?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:12 (eight years ago)

This common ilx-term sounds awfully 8channy all of a sudden...

Frederik B, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

Hahahahahahahahaha!

Thanks, RAG. Needed a laugh today.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

I thought we were all familiar enough with "search and destroy"?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:15 (eight years ago)

People: search and destroy

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:16 (eight years ago)

Most of us are familiar enough with the concept of "connotation" as well as current events to know that starting a thread called "Feminists - search and destroy" is not going to be particularly well-received in the best of times, let alone barely an hour after Donald Trump has been inaugurated as the leader of one of the most powerful nations in the world. I would have said "all" but we have here empirical evidence that would prove me wrong.

Search: Abigail Scott Duniway, Oregon's own leading suffragette. She agitated for the vote and for women's rights 40 years before Oregon granted women the vote in 1912, eight years before the 19th Amendment was passed.

Destroy: proto-feminist Carrie Nation, who organized women in the cause of "temperance". Here she is with her trademark hatchet:

Sorry if the destroy part seemed unnecessary but I assumed you might file Paglia and Christina Hoff Sommers under that.

Could mods elete the "and destroy" part? If it's really going to make the wrong impression.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:21 (eight years ago)

'Feminists - search' doesn't really sound too great either.

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Friday, 20 January 2017 18:22 (eight years ago)

Feminists - S/D. Even Search/Destroy. S or D. In a post-GamerGate world, where women at times have to go underground due to internet-organized campaigns of abuse, this thread title is also freaking me out.

Frederik B, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:24 (eight years ago)

best

trilby mouth (darraghmac), Friday, 20 January 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

Classic or Dud would have been slightly less offensive but only slightly

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:28 (eight years ago)

I'm really sorry guys, I was genuinely interested because I was tired of all the anti-feminist assholes I've been seeing recently and apparently now I look like one of them. I didn't think of how it might look to people who weren't familiar with the "search and destroy" format.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:31 (eight years ago)

wow outic thinks we dont need to talk about feminism nice

trilby mouth (darraghmac), Friday, 20 January 2017 18:31 (eight years ago)

Οὖτις- I wanted a thread specifically about finding writers.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:33 (eight years ago)

I think we're willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that this was just poorly worded, but you could have just put "writers" in the title

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)

not all feminists are writers etc

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)

search: me
destroy: my mom's cat

billstevejim, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:36 (eight years ago)

#notallfeminists

F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 20 January 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)

This is a good teaching moment, RAG. Take yer lumps and try to understand why the lumps are happening and then, yes, once the thread title has been changed let's all discuss and recommend some good feminist writers.

Uhm, so should we just go ahead and recommend some or just wait for a bit

What are feminists and can we eat them?

(The caption: “fine dining.”) (DJP), Friday, 20 January 2017 18:44 (eight years ago)

thread for contemplating the serious issues raised by the Feminist movement

Uhm, so should we just go ahead and recommend some or just wait for a bit

― THE SKURJ OF FAKE NEWS. (kingfish), Friday, 20 January 2017 18:44

Please recommend some.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:49 (eight years ago)

my favorites are all sci-fi writers lol

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:52 (eight years ago)

Οὖτις- How To Suppress Women's Writing by Joanna Russ?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:56 (eight years ago)

Russ is good. LeGuin, Tiptree, Emshwiller.

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 January 2017 18:59 (eight years ago)

Are you talking about their fiction, non-fiction or both?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 19:01 (eight years ago)

both although I don't think Tiptree ever wrote any non-fiction (dunno about Emshwiller)

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 January 2017 19:08 (eight years ago)

Yeah, LeGuin, Butler, Joanna Russ' _The Female Man_

THE SKURJ OF FAKE NEWS. (kingfish), Friday, 20 January 2017 19:09 (eight years ago)

I think this was recommended on ILX last summer. I checked out bell hooks' _The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love_ ,and it's better-written, more empathetic, and caring than the vast majority of her most vocal supporters on social media.

THE SKURJ OF FAKE NEWS. (kingfish), Friday, 20 January 2017 19:12 (eight years ago)

When I mentioned people being thrown under the bus I was referring to important feminists who are seen by some as incompatible with modern feminism and perhaps their achievements aren't taken seriously enough.
Don't want to talk too much about science fiction but this is mainly where I've seen that complaint. Outside of a few authors like LeGuin and Octavia Butler, a lot of young SF feminists don't seem interested in earlier feminist SF.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 20 January 2017 19:25 (eight years ago)

I'm really sorry guys, I was genuinely interested because I was tired of all the anti-feminist assholes I've been seeing recently and apparently now I look like one of them. I didn't think of how it might look to people who weren't familiar with the "search and destroy" format.

― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, January 20, 2017 6:31 PM (one hour ago)

I am very familiar with the Search & Destroy format, thanks for mansplaining tho. I also don't think we need any more forums for pitting women against each other and seeing how they measure up. If you want a recommendations thread then don't do an S/D, do a recommendations thread.

emil.y, Friday, 20 January 2017 19:58 (eight years ago)

And if you want to talk about past history of feminism and the way the movement does or does not include certain women, start a thread about that instead of being super-reductionist. Though tbh I'm not really sure the bunch of majority white dudes that make up ilx are a particularly great demographic to be seeking wisdom about this from.

emil.y, Friday, 20 January 2017 20:01 (eight years ago)

*pulls down brim of fedora, storms out of thread*

In the Ways of John Scales (Noodle Vague), Friday, 20 January 2017 20:05 (eight years ago)

I vote for locking the thread and letting RAG start a new one with a title closer to the intended theme, if indeed it's "recommend me some great feminist writers/texts" or something. Would be a shame if that format did catch on with this thread, but the title (which really is bad, sorry RAG) put people off, or even just if we had to wade through this opening spell when reading back over it.

stein beck ii: the wrath of grapes (Doctor Casino), Friday, 20 January 2017 20:11 (eight years ago)

ditto 1 million times everything emil.y said

(The caption: “fine dining.”) (DJP), Friday, 20 January 2017 20:18 (eight years ago)

lol today of all days to start this stupid thread.

Treeship, Friday, 20 January 2017 20:20 (eight years ago)

I think Doctor Casino has a good idea. If we just changed the title it would make the opening posts very confusing, so I'll lock this one. RAG, feel free to start a new thread closer to what you say you wanted.
