, Monday, 23 January 2017 22:34 (eight years ago)

this one is so hard for me that I might not be able to vote

my money is on garlic to win, I guess

but I have a special love for shallots

and scallions, I love them a lot too

quincie u are an ilxor for whom i have historically held a very high regard but you have just now placed white onions and red onions in the same category and its ridiculous its just absolutely an appalling decision.

will mull a ban thread

Only something as unbelievably delicious as garlic could beat something as essential as onion.

chap, Monday, 23 January 2017 23:22 (eight years ago)

Darragh please know that is with much trepidation that I lumped "storage onions" together and now. . . I'm sorry, so sorry

If this were a pick one only for the rest of your days on this earth then I think onions would edge out garlic? Maybe not.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 23 January 2017 23:35 (eight years ago)

if we had at least a consistent level of awfulness then spring onioms, white onions and red onions in one group would make this easy

but as is.... tough

..... leeks?

i mewn i couldnt be without any of the options that i recognise but the best iteration of anything here is slowcooked buttered leeks as a pie base, right?

trilby mouth (darraghmac), Monday, 23 January 2017 23:43 (eight years ago)

jesus. this poll is actually monstrous and has made me famished to boot.

trilby mouth (darraghmac), Monday, 23 January 2017 23:44 (eight years ago)

The poll specified taste, not utility. I'd choose onions for greater utility; I could barely cook a meal without them. But garlic has a fuller and more versatile taste as it moves from raw to simmered to sautéed to roasted to carmelized.

I share your love of shallots. They are compact little miracles. I'm also a huge fan of the leek -- Chaucer references it, talking about how old men would like to be: "an hoar heed and a greene tayl" - to me they always look like old men on the root end because of that. but I mean...that standard storage onion...well, for one thing, red onions & sweet onions are pretty different, your vote goes a long way there

and of course garlic, it's just incredible, roasted garlic is too good for us really, it's simply the best

except for maybe ramps, the elusive ramp is also incredible though it doesn't have the day-to-day value of the noble onion

please what is a ramp

by which i mean to say by what name is it known in the civilised world if it is eaten there

Mother Teresa May I (darraghmac), Monday, 30 January 2017 01:19 (eight years ago)

cos a google says its a leek, spring onion and garlic and lookit thats a nonsense poll option and a nonsense concept

Mother Teresa May I (darraghmac), Monday, 30 January 2017 01:24 (eight years ago)

ramps generally grow in the wild. people get pretty into finding them. they're really their own thing. you forage for them. I bet if I could make an omelette with them in Dublin, I would be hailed as a hero in Ireland, because they are sort of a perfect thing. but because they're quite seasonal and that's a big part of their mystique, they can't really win this poll.

Due to their different usages I cant decide, leek, or garlic... argh

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 30 January 2017 02:36 (eight years ago)

Ramps are def their own thing; my ramp experience is limited to a few times in fancy restaurants, so they have a rarified quality to me. . . scapes also. Both lovely but not a part of my life like the quotidian onion and garlic. Which I can't imagine life without.
