the eponymous state fair of the musical State Fair is the Iowa one, which runs August 8 - 18 this year

When are state fairs supposed to be held? I'd have thought July or August was standard.

before kids are back in school, before grain harvest season but after some fruit/vegetable harvest so competitions for the best exemplars can be held. all varies by climate and what the fair showcases, I'd think

This website says (as of 1991) there is non”state fair” as such in PA:
The state fair was a victim of its own success: the county fairs it propagated eventually overshadowed it in popularity and importance. And, so, the last state fair was held in 1899.

The Bloomsburg (PA) State Fair kinda fills this role, and runs - I think - from August into September. Went a bunch of times back when I live there.
