if you follow me on any sort of social media thing you're probably sick of me referencing it, but i'm putting up doonaldjtrump.com up tomorrow (monday) around noonish. it's similar to conferencecall.com in some ways - randomized video and images layered over a looping soundtrack - but the vibe is pretty different. currently it has about 40 clips/12 minutes worth of material.
i've tested it myself, of course, but i'm thinking it would probably be good to make sure it works with someone else's browser/device. would anyone be willing to try it out really quick? if so please send me a message at zachrscott at g mail and i'll send you a test link.i just want to make sure that 1) it loads up and starts when you click, 2) a message explaining the controls appears and disappears within the first few seconds, 3)that the controls (space to pause, right arrow to skip to the next clip) work, 4) that the information panel button in the upper-right works, and 5) that generally nothing completely fucking insane is going on.
assuming everything still works, i'll flip the switch tomorrow and then possibly be murdered by 4chan a few days later

(i'm esp interested in a quick test from someone using windows. i think it should work for most versions, but i'm afraid that it may be incompatible with some older versions of windows)

that unsettling splash page tho

the real splash page is pretty similar, just with some minimal UI and text overlaid.
thanks testers! :)

also, one of the metafilter commetns was "Koyaaaaaanisnazi", which i kind of want to steal

― devvvine, Monday, 6 February 2017 20:34 (eight years ago)
alright I sacked up and decided to watch a few minutes of it, and it's really good (i.e. horrible)
― frogbs, Monday, 6 February 2017 20:34 (eight years ago)
i'm tallying that up as you speak (i'm planning on adding a sources section)
looks like at the moment there are 41 separate segments, roughly 12 and a half minutes worth, using video or audio from 64 sources.

awesome job KM. it feels a bit like a documentary beamed in from the future and therefore strangely comforting. All the footage of his rallies is really going to reverberate through the rest of our lives
― rob, Monday, 6 February 2017 21:04 (eight years ago)
it's interesting that each time you refresh the clips play in a different order, and that it appears to keep playing to infinity

― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 6 February 2017 21:11 (eight years ago)
you can download it here if you're interested:https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/doonaldjtrump.com/audio/bgmusic.mp3
the music doesn't have a good "ending" because it's meant to seamlessly loop back to the beginning. unfortunately on the website, at least for me, there's always a really noticeable 1 second gap between the loops, but maybe that's not as much as an issue for people with better internet service? i dunno. i'm glad i didn't make the music more depressing. recently i was worried that the music was making things more hopeful and optimistic than they should be, which shows how awful my intuition is!
― Karl Malone, Monday, 6 February 2017 21:15 (eight years ago)
yeah, it uses a similar to structure to conferencecall.biz and thirtysecondstories.com: there's a bucket full of clips, and then it draws from that bucket randomly until every clip has played once. then it fills up the buckets with all the clips and starts the cycle again. i'm not sure what the exact odds are of two people ever seeing the 41 clips in the same order, but i believe it to be approximately 1 in 7304325780825346
― Karl Malone, Monday, 6 February 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)
good news - some random dude on facebook messaged me to say that he downloaded the site and applied a slight cross-fade between each clip so that the annoying 1-2 second pause between clips is eliminated. he hasn't sent it over yet but hopefully it works!
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 17:53 (eight years ago)
I kind of like the pause, it's sorta ominous
― softie (silby), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 17:56 (eight years ago)
yeah, I'm going to check it out and maybe modify it (or not use it at all) before updating. I kind of enjoy the pause as well, but I'm interested to see how it changes things to have no gap at all.

I guess it's too late to mention now, but it started freezing for me about halfway through. Perhaps a lot of people are watching it all at once? Great work though.
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 00:03 (eight years ago)
The soundtrack continued while the clips started freezing and at first I wasn't sure if it was intentional.
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 00:04 (eight years ago)
i've only heard from one or two other people about skipping and freezing (although that probably means there are a bunch more people experiencing it that didn't say anything :-/), but looking at analytics, it does look like it's loading more slowly as more and more people use the site simultaneously. at peak it was around 150 people on at the same time, and at any given moment it's around 30-40.
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 00:12 (eight years ago)

thanks, and that's nice to hear! the traffic has kind of tailed off over the last 24 hours, despite getting short write-ups in various places (a free weekly newspaper in athens called LiFO, hunger magazine, unrated, a few german websites (nerdcore and urbanshit). definitely can't complain, though - it's gotten about 20,000 visitors since monday, and most of those have just been through facebook/twitter/word of mouth.

βArt makes the familiar strange so that it can be freshly perceived. To do this it presents its material in unexpected, even outlandish ways: the shock of the new.β
I think this site does this with the familiar clips. we see trump so much now he often seems unreal. this deepened my sense of his reality, and the reality of the nation that elected him.
awesome work.
― Treeship, Thursday, 9 February 2017 05:01 (eight years ago)
I saw many of the 'familiar' clips for the first time here, bcz not having TV i succeeded in avoiding as much election/DJT video as possible last year.
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 February 2017 05:06 (eight years ago)
As horrifying as this is there's something beautifully cathartic in seeing the Spencer clip when yr not expecting it.
― devvvine, Thursday, 9 February 2017 10:46 (eight years ago)
sorry to ask for testing help again, but after receiving some very useful javascript modifications from a kind guy from germany, we eliminated the gap between the clips and replaced it with a very quick crossfade.
i'm wondering if performance takes a hit - if the clips are slow to load in the first place, if there is audio/video lag with the new version, and if there is, if it's worse than that encountered on the version of the website i'm currently using. it seems to work really well for me (chrome, average broadband connection, os x 10.10.5) but i just wanted to check with a few other people before deploying the new version.
if anyone has a spare minute to try it out, here's the new version: http://doonaldjtrump.com/update.html
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 February 2017 19:27 (eight years ago)
the contrast of all these clips w/ the obama one w/ him getting in the helicopter is stunning and makes me feel miserable

i wrote to a bunch of places last week letting them know about the website, offering to send images or answer questions if they were interested writing about it, etc. the obvious places - boingboing, dangerous minds, hyperallergenic, colossal, etc. none of them responded, although chicagoist did publish something about yesterday (using a crappy screenshot image even though my message offered to send a much better quality original image - guess I should have just attached it to the email but I was afraid it would tag my email as spam)
anyway, i just checked boingboing, in the back of my mind hoping maybe they wrote up something about it, and for 3 glorious seconds i was sure they did. they used my main doonaldjtrump image - the one with three overlapping jiggly trump faces that appears on the splash page before the sequence begins - for this article: http://boingboing.net/2017/02/14/team-trump-is-imploding.html. to add insult to injury, the image is manipulated (it appears to be jiggling at .03 seconds per frame as opposed to the slower frame rate of the original), renamed (trump-stimulant.gif), and uncredited. the uncredited thing isn't a huge deal - it happens all the time on the internet, and I'll just write them a quick note asking them to credit me - but it was more just the happy rush of thinking that they wrote up an article on it, only to see that it was...not that all.
boo hoo hoo, life is terrible, woe is me, the end

FWIW I checked the site out for the first time last night and I was transfixed for a solid 20 minutes. It's a splendid bit of satire (if you can call it that) and such an effective idea. Great work!
― Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Wednesday, 15 February 2017 10:35 (eight years ago)
uncredited happens all the time but for a site like that it is a very shitty move
― marcos, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)
i wrote to the author last night, and she explained that she thought it was created in-house, which typically doesn't receive an image credit. thing is, that's probably right - i can totally see why she thought that.
here's the original, which i posted back in 2015:
http://68.media.tumblr.com/27ebb5193e778baba5d25f1ed74a2bcb/tumblr_nudwy4Xz8P1qdmmiqo2_r1_500.gif
here's the one that they used, not just for yesterday's article but for another back in february and another in july 2016:
http://i.imgur.com/7BwVPPh.gif
it might be hard to tell (it depends on your browser), but the second one is much faster. so i guess sometime back in 2016 someone there modified my original - something that i do all the time myself, with other people's images and video, although i try to link back to the original content when appropriate - and then it was in BB's "in-house" image bin. so i can see how she could just search her in-house images for trump-related images and use it, without realizing there was an issue. i wish they would have continued to use it actually! i didn't ask for them to take it down, just requested an image credit. oh well.
