Turns out the last thread was year-specific.

Via tune is space... taking down a racist, misogynist asshole over real talk on gay teens and older men:

Even the gay thread can't escape what this year is, huh.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 17:19 (nine years ago)

what a wonderful way to kick off the thread.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Friday, 3 March 2017 17:21 (nine years ago)

well Gay Shame got such short shrift during the Marriage and Military Service Is All We Want era

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 March 2017 17:40 (nine years ago)

Gay shame had its day

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 17:43 (nine years ago)

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 March 2017 17:57 (nine years ago)

How far back do we want to go here? Smoking in public?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 18:00 (nine years ago)

yes, and raids by costumed 'cops' for sure

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 March 2017 18:08 (nine years ago)

I definitely want my name in the papers.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 18:10 (nine years ago)

Did anyone watch any of the Dustin Temple Black miniseries on ABC? *runs*

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 19:21 (nine years ago)

A friend offered qualified praise, despite some of the haircuts.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 3 March 2017 19:24 (nine years ago)

I only caught a big chunk of the first installment. As everyone pointed out, almost more an exercise in intersectionality than good TV.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 19:25 (nine years ago)

Guy playing young Cleve Jones was awfully cute tho.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 19:26 (nine years ago)

I read How to Survive the Plague over hte holiday and, yeah, the young Cleve photos therein show a young man in startling control over his Timbaland boots.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 3 March 2017 19:27 (nine years ago)

How to Survive a Plague, I meant.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 3 March 2017 19:28 (nine years ago)

And speaking of the Tom of Finland biopic ...

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 19:30 (nine years ago)

btw i have my Gyllenhaal/Sondheim ticket

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 March 2017 20:04 (nine years ago)

ayo

I've been thinking a lot about aloneness and minority distress.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 March 2017 16:02 (nine years ago)

That damned article.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 13 March 2017 16:05 (nine years ago)

Erin Gibson, of the Talking Shade podcast, has (half-jokingly?) outlined her suicide pact with herself when she reaches a point where she's no longer going to be able to take care of herself. It involves a trip to Paris, a luxurious hotel suite, and an indulgent pile of pills. She knows her gay audience.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 13 March 2017 16:08 (nine years ago)

i could not relate to that article at all personally speaking but it was interesting. it did make me examine how the conditioning of growing up in the closet may have molded me, so far the results are inconclusive tho.

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 March 2017 20:27 (nine years ago)

Molded you in what ways?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 13 March 2017 20:29 (nine years ago)

we might know when we're dead

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 March 2017 20:29 (nine years ago)

that damn epistemology of the closet again

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 March 2017 20:29 (nine years ago)

i dunno, i never really considered the longterm effects of the closeted life beyond not having sex until i was 20 because i don't really feel as if i'm a different person in any drastic way, but that article got me to thinking more about it. for some reason i had never really connected my general inclination to deal with internal turmoil silently and privately to that but i think that probably explains a condition i've carried w/ me into adulthood.

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 March 2017 20:34 (nine years ago)

xp Reading The Velvet Rage helped remind me that, though I'm always quick to point out that I (unlike many in my generation) identified as gay long before I was a practicing gay, there were those five or so years between knowing I was gay and admitting it to anyone.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 13 March 2017 20:34 (nine years ago)

only 5? not bad

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 March 2017 21:29 (nine years ago)

I knew I was queer before I was gay: I didn't much cotton to the idea of "dating," whether men or women, I read a lot, preferred the company of friends, liked Henry James, etc.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 March 2017 21:34 (nine years ago)

(ie you've heard Stephin's 50 Song Memoir already?)

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 March 2017 21:41 (nine years ago)

I heard 10 songs, my anxiety increasing as I realized he'd hired no guest singers.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 March 2017 21:44 (nine years ago)

entering his full Noel Coward phase

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 March 2017 21:50 (nine years ago)

i can't remember if i subconsciously realized i was gay but the first time the thought of a guy made me cum i realized there was no turning back (even tho there is, but i think i knew there wasn't)

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 March 2017 21:59 (nine years ago)

" I read a lot, preferred the company of friends"

Female friends or male friends, Alf? I barely had any male ones.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Monday, 13 March 2017 23:46 (nine years ago)

Do you mind that I call you Alf?

Male! Still is. I've got a number of close women around me, but I've got bros, most of whom are straight.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 March 2017 01:53 (nine years ago)

plenty in that article strikes a v real chord and mostly the bits that don't scan less as unrecognisable and more "there but for the grace of god" etc - my not having addiction or mental illness problems feels more like a lucky combination of personality, social circle choices and the bubble of my industry than things that could only happen to other people
