You know those moments where everything goes wrong? REALLY wrong? But someone, somewhere, thought it was a good idea?

(I watched this ceremony. I have absolutely no memory of this performance at all. Probably because I was so overwhelmed with schlock I immediately blotted it out of my mind.)

1985 was a GREAT year for horribleness, mind you. There was this legendary fuckup:

that Against All Odds performance is worthy of the Miss America Pageant
― ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:26 (eight years ago)
I mean, low expectations and all apply, but this is REALLY just awful stuff all around.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:27 (eight years ago)
I do remember the "Against All Odds" performance and thinking "Ann Reinking? Who?"
And then we get Interpretive DANCE! and Reinking gasp/whispering "Take a look at me now" and it's just HORRIBLE.
And of course Phil Collins was sitting in the audience. (The upshot was that starting the following year they began aiming to have the actual performers do the songs when possible.)
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:29 (eight years ago)
btw the Ghostbusters performance is hands down the most ridiculous thing I've seen in a long time and I suspect was the inspiration for the "Praise You" video
― ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:33 (eight years ago)
Haha there's a thought.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)
apparently Reinking was a Fosse protoge
― ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:38 (eight years ago)
Did the Ghostbusters miss their cue to break through the wall? The timing looked off.

Reminds me of learning that up until MJ, more or less, Super Bowl half time shows were everything from Up With People to magic tricks.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:56 (eight years ago)
Yup indeed. Elvis Presto was a thing.

that "against all odds" performance might have been the spark for molly shannon's career
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:58 (eight years ago)
Reinking was in Fosse's All That Jazz and a Cosby Show episode as Robert Culp's wife.

Oh good grief. So "For Your Eyes Only" was nominated in its year and they got Sheena Easton to do it and...well...these are all probably the same dancers from the _Ghostbusters_ production.

WTF U GUYS Anne Reinking is muthafuckin Grace Farrell from the 1982 Annie movie musical how do u not know this
tbf because of this I cannot objectively judge her performance of Against All Odds, as far as I'm concerned she is Grace and Grace is a perfect angel from heaven

I never really thought of that Aladdin song (or Robin Williams) as the logical progression of the music from minstrel shows until just now
