Who will win the Palme at Cannes? (2017)

We'll probably have to update the poll, as there's usually one or two more films added :) But so far it's the worst lineup ever.

Is the Coppola a remake of the Clint Eastwood movie? Weird.

A new Haneke w/ Huppert has to be in w/ a good shout, I guess. Will go see the Zvyagintsev, Ramsay, Lanthimos, Haynes and Baumbach too.

Ok. It's also smarter than last year, where I made a poll that actually ended after the awards had been handed out...

Looking forward to Loznitsa, Haynes, Lanthimos, Hong, Kawase and Haneke, and whatever else surprises. But this is such a dusty lineup once again, and only three women out of 18 is embarrassing.

If they wanted a new American director in competition they should have taken a look at Tangerine and included Sean Baker :( If he winds up in Quinzaine I am going to get pissed.

Cannes is often slammed for not giving enough exposure to women directors in its Official Competition. This looks like another year bound to generate similar controversy, as only three women directors are featured in this year’s competition. Plenty of people expected Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled,” an erotic thriller based on Thomas Cullinan novel, to make it into competition. It did, alongside Lynne Ramsay’s “You Were Never Really Here,” which stars Joaquin Phoenix as a war veteran trying to save a young woman from sex trafficking (Ekaterina Samsonov, also in “Wonderstruck”). Then there’s Cannes regular Naomi Kawase from Japan, whose movies are often screened at the festival even as they remain unreleased in much of the world. Her latest, “Radiance,” is also a part of the lineup. Needless to say, there will be plenty of discussions in the weeks to come about new films from women directors that could have made it in this year.

Naomi Kawases latest got her widest release yet, and she's one of the best directors in the lineup. Still the Water was irredeemable, though.

That had bio release in Denmark, and is better than anything Kore-eda and Kurosawa has done in ages. Actually, Kawase is the best example Cannes has when they say that the gender problem is not on their end - though three women in competition is an embarassment again. Kawase won the Camera d'Or, then moved to competition with the great Shara, and followed it up with two more personal auteur films, of which The Haunted Forrest won the Grand Prix. It then became the only Grand Prix winner in the last 25 years without US release.

Director's Forthnight = Quinzaine de Realisateurs. I think I say Quinzaine because I also say Semaine = Critics Week, which I say to differ from other Critics Weeks at other festivals. So it's Semaine, Quinzaine, Un Certain Regard and Competition.

I mean, there's almost no chance that Claire Denis making a film based on Roland Barthes isn't twice as good as whatever pap Doillon or Hazanavicius has made this time. But it's probably also weirder and less sellable. Cannes is getting more and more boring each year imo. Hope it changes soon.

Apparently it's a comedy based on Barthes' The Lovers Discourse starring Juliette Binoche and Gerard Depardieu. According to IMDB she has two other projects in production, so I don't really know what's going on.

Loathe Depardieu but can't help to be curious about that one.

He was pretty good in Valley of Love. He has become so absurd at this point, that he probably mostly fits into sorta meta-projects, which Denis' new film sorta sounds like as well.

Isn't the Hazanavicius the Godard/Wiazemsky biopic? That one seems like a real winner.

Btw there's not a single film from Scandinavia at Cannes this year. Not in Competition, nor in Un Certain Regard, Quinzaine or Semaine :( After Joachim Trier and Ruben Östlund were tipped for competition, and after the two last UCR's were won by Iceland and Finland. A complete shutout. That's a major disappointment.

The lineup was pathetic. Only five new names of which at least two, Bong Joon-ho and Noah Baumbach, should have had their Cannes debut, like, a decade ago. A bunch of repeaters, and then inexplicable bullshit from people like Doillon and Mondruczo. As the most prestigious film-festival in the world, a response like this is an absolute embarrassment.

I think Lynne Ramsay is number four, but the award hasn't been given out each year, and also the last time was Tatiana Niculescu Bran in 2012. So it's not quite the same.

The embarrassment is more the fact that women has won the Grand Prix a couple of times, and Andrea Arnold alone has three Jury Awards, so they definitely make film that the juries like, but somehow never get the directing award... That's a quite typical unconscious misogynistic bias thingy, where something a woman has done was very good, but it probably wasn't really her that did it, you know?

that embarrassment exists throughout the entire film industry (maybe less so in Denmark?) and Cannes, like so many institutions at the top of the food chain, aren't willing to make any progress.

and not only for directors. pretty much every role in the industry except hair stylist and make up is riddled with that sexist bias.

So yeah, I agree. But Cannes is even more awful than they could be. Venice, Berlin, Locarno, they've at least given a few awards to women. Cannes just bumbles along, putting Sean Penn and Jacques Doillon in the main competition, then saying there is no room for women because they only choose the best of the best.

Tragic how the 'but is she qualified?' argument is represented in all circumstances, in all industries.
