I got my first ATV when I was 8 or 9 years old. It was very much a thing where I grew up, everyone got one eventually and we would ride them all the time all over the place. It was freedom for all under 16 kids that couldn't drive yet. Never wore a helmet and we were very reckless.

Shocked I made it without serious injury until I sold it and bought my first computer.

My father actually bought our kid a dirt bike before she was even born. She's 3 now and there's no way I'm going to let her ride it.

heres the thing

everyone's body is different

this is a complete shot in the dark but if it was a wrist/hand injury you got using the computer, maybe it was because you were using it a lot atv'ing and you overused it somehow?

the ease in which you can do harm on an atv is very easy, so it's up to the rider to take the necessary precautions, but a lot of us learn by doing/experience. it certainly helps if you have someone with years of experience and an excellent rider teaching you how it's done

most kids think they're pretty resilient so they go harder without thinking of the effects in later years

i don't think i would prohibit my child from doing this, but i would certainly make sure s/he doesn't do it a lot and gradually build up to harder riding of s/he desires

but like tom said, if you love something and don't do it or are prohibited from doing it, what kind of life are you living. this is still something you can enjoy and take precautions or mellow it down a notch. it just requires discipline

Sure, maybe I'll give in one day. I certainly took great joy in my death defying ATV shenanigans. But she's 3 now, so that won't be for awhile.
