sry for upping a random old thread, but i have a sidebar question that's kind of the inverse of this topic...
is there a word for when someone will dismiss really good ideas or concept just because they're the ones that didn't think of it? like someone who will shoot themselves in the foot because someone else came up with th good idea of not shooting themselves in the foot. i thought incorrigible could apply, but that seems more likee in regards to precedents and traditional things. i'm thinking of the person who simply hates any idea that they didn’t originate, but completely removed politics/religion/social issues. the person i'm thinking of is so stubborn that the idea to carry an umbrella in a rainstorm is offensive to them unless it came from them first.
"close-minded" and "asshole" are too casual. i need some lawyer language for this one. the thesaurus isn't helpful because i'm not all the way sure of the full definition of the word i'm looking for.

No wait. Cutting off yer nose to spite your face...
Spiteful.

the closest i can come up with is “contrary” - they do the opposite of someone else not because of what they’re doing but because of who’s doing it. “contrary” tends to have a contra-society implication tho (“does the opposite of everyone else”) which may not be what you want.

“cussed” also - not v legalistic but.

Recalcitrant?

Contrary is a good one.
― Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Sunday, 28 July 2024 16:39 (one year ago)
contrary fits, definitely. recalcitrant has the right energy, but the resistance usually comes from a sub having a good idea that the dom is mad they didn’t come up with first... like if it was the dom's idea, it would be set in concrete policy for the rest of time but since it was presented to the dom by the sub, it's terrible and stupid.
that's the specific context i'm thinking of... like a mixture of hubris, meglomania, and (not meaning this as an insult) genuine ignorance and possible lack of intellect resulting from unchecked hubris.
but again: completely removed from politics, religion, "social discourse."

slowsquatch also getting there with spiteful... yes, nose v face kinda energy but very intentional.

puffin otm.
i have nowhere else to put this, so it’s going here:
i am officially declaring my fandom of the word "cacophony." it is a cacophony of feelings i have about this perfectly cromulent word. here is its definition (c+p'd, sry for dubious formatting)-
cacophony/kə-kŏf′ə-nē/
nounJarring, discordant sound; dissonance."heard a cacophony of horns during the traffic jam."1. The use of harsh or discordant sounds in literary composition, as for poetic effect.2. An uncouth or disagreeable sound of words, owing to the concurrence of harsh letters or syllables.3. A combination of discordant sounds.4. A mix of discordant sounds; dissonance.5. A loud harsh or strident noise.Loud confusing disagreeable sounds.6. An unhealthy state of the voice. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition
so austin, why are you bringing this up now?
because i've just come up with an insult that i think is funny. it's potentially offensive, so i'm hiding it. keep #6 in mind and have a good day!

fwiw, the poet John Milton coined the word cacophony. It basically means 'shitty sound'.

interestingly, the kaki in kakistocracy has a different etymology from the caco in cacophony, I guessed they'd be the same origin... kaki is from the Greek κάκιστος, "the worst" and caco is from the Old English cac, "shit".
― fluffy tufts university (f. hazel), Friday, 29 August 2025 16:10 (six months ago)
(those two also might ultimately have the same origin in Proto-Indo-European but I'm not seeing a lot of claims to that effect)
― fluffy tufts university (f. hazel), Friday, 29 August 2025 16:12 (six months ago)
oh, trust: the caca connection was not lost on me. i'm just trying to be intentionally less immature these days, so i kept it to myself this time lol.👍🏻
