I watched an old Jack Benny movie a week or so ago, Artists and Models. It wasn't the full-on jack benny character, but enough to remind me of his well-honed self-impersonation on television and radio. I can see him clearly in my mind's eye, folding his arms, turning to the camera, and uttering "well..." in one of his many different intonations for that word, which also served as a punchline to half his jokes.

What is most mysterious abut him is how his comedy actually worked. I don't think any other comedian has ever successfully mined quite the same vein Jack Benny did, which mostly consisted of funny vocal and facial nuances overlaid on otherwise bland lines.

The character writing on that radio show (and its TV sequel, which really was radio w/ pictures) was very strong. His staff knew how to play to his strengths -- the pauses, the pained looks, the vanity of the character.
