For a while, The Informers was my favorite, but by and large Glamorama wins this one.

I love Glamorama; it's the most mind-warping of his books. But I still really love LTZ and Psycho, too. I don't like any of the others; I couldn't even finish Lunar Park.

Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr, and Violent J (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 14 May 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)

I've come to appreciate Lunar Park for what it is and how it's paced, but Ellis probably needed to spend another year on it. There are 60 killer pages in there (most of them near the beginning) and the rest is blah plot mechanics.

(American Psycho is a great book though there are sections I simply cannot re-read at this point; you can guess which ones.)

Lunar Park by a considerable margin. His most personal book, compelling and hypnotic and warm in a way that none of his other novels are. The last 20-30 pages are probably the best writing of his career.

Wasn't he working on a new novel called Tranquil Reflections? Supposed to come out this year or next?

flappy bird, Sunday, 14 May 2017 20:33 (eight years ago)

I don't know whether "Tranquil Reflections" was a real title, but supposedly he's working on a book. But dude spends one interview saying "I'm not writing a book," then in the next he says he is, and then it's game off, then on again. So: who knows. I hope it comes sooner than later but I'm not holding my breath.

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 14 May 2017 20:36 (eight years ago)

I loved LTZ and still feel kind of affectionate toward it. i was driving into los angeles early in the morning a couple of nights ago and "people are afraid to merge..." kept going through my head.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 15 May 2017 05:52 (eight years ago)

I have a soft spot for "the Rules of Attraction" since it was the first one I read from him, when I was a teenager. I have never read it again though so I don't know how I would rate it now.
"Psycho" was amazing in its own kind.
the rest, I could live without, although there's some great stuff ("LTZ", "Glamorama", parts of "Lunar Park") and some very average ("Informers", "Imperial Bedrooms").
I think by "Psycho" he had said all he had to say, the rest being, more or less a rehash of his main obsessions.

Lunar Park because it has the impersonality of a memoir. I often cringe when reading his sentences.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 10:47 (eight years ago)

This is Glamorama or it is nothing.

Popture, Monday, 15 May 2017 10:54 (eight years ago)

^This is the book I've re-read the most in life. (I don't even want to know what that says about me.)

Flappy bird, I just started a re-read of Lunar Park.

glamorama has the best book cover design.

I only know about this guy from his terrible opinions on Twitter, what are his books like

softie (silby), Wednesday, 24 May 2017 03:46 (eight years ago)

Less Than Zero and The Rules of Attraction are great. I read bits of American Psycho but never finished it. Haven't looked at anything else.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 24 May 2017 15:49 (eight years ago)

Pretty much like DJP there. Personally I always thought the best thing about Rules was that LTZ's narrator turns up in both an in character cameo and viewed by another character, and in both cases the effect is to make him seem like a Valley dude dumbass. Which I rather appreciated!

Anybody posting in this thread who hasn't read Glamorama, do it. It's a masterpiece.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 24 May 2017 16:05 (eight years ago)

Violet Jax (Violet Jynx), Wednesday, 24 May 2017 16:08 (eight years ago)

voted Rules.. as i know no-one else will*. i loved it as a kid. and the movie's brilliant too.

*probably.

piscesx, Wednesday, 24 May 2017 16:13 (eight years ago)

Rules of Attraction is definitely my second favorite. Never really dug LTZ, and while I liked American Psycho, I don't know when I'll ever feel like re-reading it.

Glamorama is still the only one I haven't read, I'll get to it soon... iirc BEE considers it his best work.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 24 May 2017 17:19 (eight years ago)

He got mad because Zoolander ripped off the plot, but I suspect a little bit of that anger was because Zoolander did it better.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 24 May 2017 17:29 (eight years ago)

tell you something i discovered recently; the score (not the songs) in the LTZ film is amazing.

piscesx, Wednesday, 24 May 2017 19:31 (eight years ago)

in fairness, most of the songs are also amazing

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 2 June 2017 00:01 (eight years ago)

damn that margin is pretty surprising

flappy bird, Friday, 2 June 2017 00:52 (eight years ago)

Really surprised Rules beat LTZ. I thought it was universally regarded as the disappointing follow-up. I guess I'm old.
