The Valley Girl mecca of the '80s. Each of these films has at least one scene shot inside the mall, except for Valley Girl (1983), which we have to include even though it just features exterior shots. This poll is for the original Galleria that closed in 1999, not the redesigned current version.

this is a more difficult choice than i thought it'd be but ultimately it's gotta be t2

night of the comet, which i don't think i've seen, but which a childhood friend described to me in rapturous tones like he'd seen the world after a revolution

night of the comet is great

Haven't seen most of these but it's hard for me to imagine any making more enthusiastic and thorough use of the location than Commando. Wish I could have seen the original, which seems like a real peach of this kind of "John Portman compressed into three-story mall scale" design. Atlanta's Lenox Mall had a similar major space, which has been largely filled in and screwed up - maybe more painful than just shredding the whole thing and turning it into an indoor-outdoor promenade mall (following the other 80s lineage of Jon Jerde) as was done here.

I picked t2 because it reminded me of the halcyon days of an arcade in every mall.

Ridgemont!

"I hate working the theater. All the action's on the other side of the mall."

I guess Woody wouldn't go west for Scenes from a Mall.

Mall scenes with elevators and escalators were filmed at the Stamford Town Center in Stamford, Connecticut where shooting was conducted for around two weeks. Mall exteriors were filmed at the actual Beverly Center on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, the mall where most of the picture is set.

That is totally crazy that Moon Unit was only 14

i can't believe i was the only vote for "chopping mall".

Chopping Mall is probably the one that was the MOST shot in the Galleria - I'm guessing at least 2/3 of it was shot in the mall

Josefa, Saturday, 20 May 2017 04:23 (eight years ago)

"Chopping Mall" is some cheap wordplay though. There's no chopping in the movie. Killbots is a more accurate title for it.

Josefa, Saturday, 20 May 2017 04:27 (eight years ago)

one month passes...

The recent "robot drowning" in Washington DC and other unfortunate incidents involving security robots have made Chopping Mall/Killbots seem quite a prescient film, a warning from our not-too-distant past

When I was a kid I just figured all American malls looked like this

albvivertine, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 10:56 (eight years ago)

it's not super different from your average larger sized American mall tbh

coincidentally just watched Chopping Mall for the first time over the weekend. fun, but yes, disappointed in the lack of chopping.
