Per Variety:

Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, Dakota Fanning and Brian Geraghty star in the series.

I am a massive fan of the original novel, which was one of those deeply unsettling reads that I couldn't put down. (Never did get around to the sequel though I should have, and apparently there are two new books due soon.) The book was a prime mixture of melodrama, atmosphere and some extremely vicious social critique that it took me years and more reflection to really come to grips with. It's been some years since I reread it and I would like to see how much of the crossgender/identity/age elements hold up, though.

Had always wanted to see it filmed and given how TV works these days, this is probably the best option, though some of the most utterly horrific points in the book probably won't make it.

I should re-read this to see if I'm mis-remembering how much I liked it. Because I tried to read his latest book, Surrender, New York, and had to stop about a third of the way through. It was just god-awful, with a nothingburger of a plot, and dialogue that sounded like it was written by one of those neural networks we make fun of on other threads. (Not to mention basically being a thinly-veiled polemic: "I, Caleb Carr, am soooooo much smarter than you fancy-pants 'forensic scientists' with your DNA and your 'evidence.'")

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:27 (eight years ago)

Yeah, that's the thing. I am REALLY wondering if twenty-years-back me was caught up more in the trappings too much, or missed more covert messages.

Tentative yes so far. Showed a lot (if not all) of the results of the truly brutal murder that starts the book so that sets a tone at least. There's moments throughout that feel cinematically obvious or overdone, and it's interesting thinking in my head about how an adaptation would have worked and been filmed twenty years ago versus how it's done now, but the actors themselves seem to be acquitting themselves well enough, some clunky lines aside. Might work more as a mood piece in the end.

I was pretty bummed out by their young Teddy Roosevelt casting. Dakota Fanning is A+ and i love Daniel Brühl in all things always

Cinematography is v good, nice atmospherics etc

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 28 January 2018 01:57 (seven years ago)

Yeah Teddy needed an actor who was a little stockier I think — he did have a higher voice in real life though so that worked well enough.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 January 2018 02:27 (seven years ago)

but he was so low-energy!
I mean, i wasnt looking for Robin Williams pantomime Teddy but he was a lively character in the book

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 28 January 2018 02:58 (seven years ago)

Now that’s true!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 January 2018 03:14 (seven years ago)

i love Luke Evans. i think it's terrible that he's married because he should be married to me.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Sunday, 28 January 2018 03:45 (seven years ago)

oh he's not married but his bf looks like such a tit so my point holds.

i was a huge fan of the novel, and I felt all the performances & production/ cinematography were excellent. the period-detail was so good!
idk what show you all watched

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 May 2018 02:36 (seven years ago)

performances were fine, casting was good actually

looked great obv

you could hear the clunks when the writers moved

writing and plotting are, on the whole, terrible now.

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Monday, 21 May 2018 07:13 (seven years ago)

period detail, dropping in real ppl as ancillary characters, entire paragraphs of authentic history tripping for a barman's lips, all of that cheap matthew pearl crap that tries to cover over the fact that they havent even tried to avoid (character and plot)-by-numbers

laurel or hardyhearin (darraghmac), Monday, 21 May 2018 07:16 (seven years ago)

"Dropping in real ppl" happens in the source novel. In fact it happens on an even larger scale than the tv series. Thought this was a good adaptation.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 21 May 2018 13:37 (seven years ago)

well its was a coverall criticism of precisely that fandom novelling cf m pearl
