This poll IS super important

Although I am worried we are not gonna have a lot of participation from the under-18 set

As I'm sure anyone who's seen more than ten of my posts will be shocked to discover, I'm a Marvel dude all the way. And as I'm sure is true of 3/4 of the people who might've seen those posts, I was born in the '70s.

Sir Isaac Gluten (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 14:35 (seven years ago)

pretty much every dc superhero has served in the justice league at least once so this is basically marvel vs dc, right?

I love Marvel and was born at the very end of the 60s. (Nov. 1969)

I chose Marvel for their overall goodness (b. 1966), but as a kid, the '70s JLA and LoSH were my favorites, next to JR, Sr's Spider-Man.

Since I was not really into comics as a kid and in order to get some votes from younger people I'm gonna vote for what my son would vote for (Marvel, born in the 00s)

silverfish, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 15:40 (seven years ago)

I haven't really enjoyed anything Marvel has published since I was a teenager. Whereas my appreciation of DC has gone way up - not necessarily because I love all their new titles or their shitty movies or their poor editorial decisions - but more because their universe seems so much richer and more fun. I love the silly Silver Age stuff, Kirby's Fourth World, the grim n gritty Bronze Age stuff, Vertigo/Alan Moore era, Grant Morrison era = that's a lot. And then there's the non-comics stuff like the Bruce Timm shows that I love *a lot*. Whereas really the only Marvel stuff I like is in this narrow swathe between '64 and '78 or so.

Movies or comics

Justice League, 60s

Since I'm a pretentious nob, I read comics first for the art, second for the writing, and I don't give a shit about superheros. I remember being given collections of classic Batman & Superman stories as a kid, and they certainly made an impression, but I didn't really fall in love with the medium until I came across Bill Sienkiewicz's art on Moon Knight and The New Mutants (both Marvel) in the 80s. It kick-started my lifelong love of the medium.

Since then, DC has tended to be a more regular employer of the artists and writers I care about. This was especially true during the mid-to-late 80s creative explosion that eventually gave rise to Vertigo (Moore, Morrison, The Dark Knight Returns, etc.). But among the cornerstone Marvel & DC franchises, Batman is the only monthly "true canon" title I've ever avidly followed. I picked up every issue during Kelly Jones's long penciling run in the mid 90s and came back a decade later for Grant Morrison's writing tenure.

So, despite my present love for Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel, it'd feel dishonest to vote any other way.

Fuck DC

flappy bird, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:59 (seven years ago)

Marvel, 60s

Avengers #103 (9/72) was when things really kicked off for me, though I'd read a few Marvel, DC and even Harvey comics up to that point.

Interesting that SS boiled down the DC universe down to "Justice League."

this is a booming post imo

i was much more of a marvel kid growing up but i've definitely come to appreciate the depth of dc's universe much more as an adult - particularly the fourth world stuff, which is arguably kirby's richest, most inspired and most fully-realised act of worldbuilding, clunky though some of kirby's stories may be

voted 80s, justice league

alcohol aficionado zane lamprey (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 9 June 2017 14:56 (seven years ago)

voted Marvel. i had equal amounts of Superman and X-Men comics growing up in the 80s, and i loved the DC Superman and Batman movies back then. but everything DC since then feels like it is being marketed to a circa 98 Hot Topic manager.

i will always turn up for an X-Men movie, the Guardians of the Galaxy is really good and the only thing i am looking forward to following. Dr. Strange was cool but if i never see another Avengers, Iron Man, etc. in my life that would be fine. i still think the Marvel stuff has way more promise as the recent DC movies have been absolutely godawful on every level. Batman V Superman has to be one of the dumbest movies ever made.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 9 June 2017 15:09 (seven years ago)

i am a little too young to have watched the Justice League and Super Friends cartoon shows on tv but i did order some of the action figures. those cartoons seem cool but very colorful and fun and nothing like the new movies. i loved the Batman TV show but again they are ashamed at how uncool and unDARK it is. biggest sin of DC movies is they take themselves so seriously for being about as coherent and realistic as the Tim Burton era just not any fun.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 9 June 2017 15:12 (seven years ago)

xxpost Booming post, but I still must Make Mine Marvel.

Don't get me wrong, though, I have lots of love for various DC stuff. To Shakey's list, I would also personally add Byrne- and 'triangle issue'-era Superman. But Timmverse is maybe my favorite non-comics comics-related thing, Morrison's recent stretch on Batman et al comprises maybe the best mainstream comics of the decade, and I read through the entirety of the Vertigo 'shared universe' material (from Swamp Thing through the end of Lucifer or so) every five years or so because it's largely stunningly good (probably the most underrated of all the universes).

I'm not sure that I haven't just self-swung my vote...

Sir Isaac Gluten (Old Lunch), Friday, 9 June 2017 15:13 (seven years ago)

'Morrison's recent stretch on Batman et al comprises maybe the best mainstream comics of last decade' rather. Or maybe this century, I guess. That works.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 9 June 2017 15:55 (seven years ago)

never read it. also not actually published by Marvel.

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 June 2017 15:58 (seven years ago)

I started in comics as a young, young kid with the Harvey stuff: Casper, Richie Rich, Baby Huey, Little Audrey, etc. Then at probably age 6 or so started reading Archie regularly, and then from there it was primarily on to Marvel stuff: Spider-Man (right when Len Wein took over writing), The Incredible Hulk, Man-Thing, Shogun Warriors, Micronauts, etc. The only DC stuff I read regularly was all Superman related (World of Krypton and World's Finest, primarily.)

Even today, my pull list is about 50% independent publishers, 40% Marvel and 10% DC.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 9 June 2017 16:33 (seven years ago)

I'm obsessed with the MCU but thats because Infinity Gauntlet, etc ran when I was 12 years old and at peak comics reading. Its nice to see such a big thing of yr yoof re-did on the big screen and have it not be awful.

My peak comics consumption(during the Chromium Age) wasn't really "Marvel vs DC" so much as " Xmen & Vertigo vs Everything Else"

and maybe the first two Nolan Batman movies

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 June 2017 16:47 (seven years ago)

If we're counting only the superhero stuff, my favourites are very scattered. I don't think there's any heroes or collections that I love in toto.
I was a huge Marvel fan in the 90s, particularly Spiderman. I forced myself to cry when Ben Reilly died, held up Mary Jane as the ideal woman and in retrospect a huge part of my obsession was probably hype-based loyalty. I kinda regret that period or at least how long it went on (95-05?).

I think in the Marvel universe, 90% of the coolest stuff was created by a small handful of people. DC has way more cooks to take credit for the best creations.

But then most of my favourites go deep into fantasy, science fiction and horror territory. Ditko's Dr Strange is my top favourite. Love all the imagery of cosmic beings and space gods. I liked Wolverine more when he went into noir, science fiction and samurai adventures.
Spiderman is one of the few really purely superheroey things I liked.

Always thought Green Lantern had some great concepts yet I've never wanted to read any of it.

I would have preferred if Marvel and DC fizzled out in the mid70s and the next incarnations and reinventions were less influenced by IP farming and reverence. I find a lot of the modern versions of superheroes too awkward a mixture. Those Bruce Timm cartoons hit a pretty good balance.

Marvel vs Capcom 1-2 are one of the greatest things things to ever happen to Marvel superheroes. No trying to make sense, just stupid fun and condensing a lot of the coolest aspects of the characters.

Would like to hear about your favourites and what you liked about them.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 9 June 2017 17:18 (seven years ago)

'Morrison's recent stretch on Batman et al comprises maybe the best mainstream comics of last decade' rather

it's certainly the only one I read w any enthusiasm.

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 June 2017 17:31 (seven years ago)

specific favorites of mine:

- Silver Age Superman Family stuff is waaaay close to the top of the pile for me, love all those Superman, Supergirl, Tales of Bizarro, Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane books from the late 50s/early 60s. Totally bonkers.
- Pretty much everything Kirby ever devoted serious time to from '63 on. (I'd say Fourth World books are the peak but don't want to give short shrift to FF & Thor)
- Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing, esp the Bissette/Totleben material
- Morrison's Batman run, 7 Soldiers, Invisibles, etc.
- Ditko Dr. Strange but also recently discovered the Englehart/Brunner run in the 70s which was fantastic and I would rank p high
- Been re-reading Gaiman's Sandman recently and have to say it holds up p well, altho suffers from bad art and a surfeit of moody goth silliness (it doesn't seem as particularly deep as Gaiman seems to think it is, but I really appreciate how widely it ranges story-wise)

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 June 2017 17:43 (seven years ago)

I really like parts of Moore's Swamp Thing but it's pretty messy. Too many guest stars and stylistic changes (although I'm sure some people probably love that). Moore recently said he's disowned it.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 9 June 2017 18:12 (seven years ago)

yeah well he has lots of dodgy opinions

As is my custom whenever Moore's Swamp Thing is brought up, I must once again rep hard for Veitch's follow-up run, which alongside Delano's intertwining concurrent run on Hellblazer makes up what might be my personal favorite batch of mainstream comics ever.

X-men, i suspect

Οὖτις, Saturday, 10 June 2017 02:48 (seven years ago)

Silver Surfer, September 1987; he gets got by The Runner, a cosmic Elder I doubt we'll see in the movies. I would've been 9 years old. I'd read a lot of comics before and since but somehow that one had a similar effect on me as seeing Red Five's attack run on the Death Star. Doubtless I picked it up from a gas station magazine rack on a road trip to see grandparents; I loved books but straight prose led to nausea on long road trips, while comics I could read for miles and miles.

The Infinity Gauntlet, five years later, put a button on my superhero comic book period. I halfheartedly tried to keep up with the dreck of that era but from that point on it was really b+w indie graphic novels for me. I made the right moves at the right time.

There maybe should have been a poll option for GROO THE WANDERER in retrospect.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 10 June 2017 06:13 (seven years ago)

Why is Iron Man on tv every fucking day
