SOCKS: Left and Right?

When you put on a pair of crew or tube socks (or any other sort that doesn't indicate left/right), do you take care to put the one that looks like it's been on the left foot onto the left foot, and the same with the right? I've been told that this might be a gender thing.

This question is confusing.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:34 (seven years ago)

(mostly because wtf, socks don't have designated feet, what are you talking about)

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:34 (seven years ago)

I only ever wear these:

Male, and recognize that some socks are made with designated (L and R) feet and some are not.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:42 (seven years ago)

Leeeeeee's question was specifically about socks that DON'T have designated feet, tbf.

Logos (if they're there) face out; that's often the only indicator.

waterbear say hi to me (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:44 (seven years ago)

Seems like this could be worked out p quick you ask the socks what they identify as

sleepingbag, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:44 (seven years ago)

To clarify: if you've worn a pair long enough in a sufficiently consistent way, the socks start to mold themselves into left/right shapes. The question is DO YOU CARE about this shaping.

I am starting to suspect DJP that you are a gender traitor, FYI.

Do the eeeL Roll! (Leee), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:52 (seven years ago)

I am starting to suspect that other members of my gender are crazier than I previously thought them to be.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 18:08 (seven years ago)

socks are socks, also people make a big deal about wearing socks that don't match, who cares?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 18:26 (seven years ago)

My daughter, when she was 3, after putting on a shoe would often ask me if she put it on the correct foot. Once, she asked me if she put her sock on the correct foot and I had to explain that there is no left or right for socks. I wonder if some people just never had this conversation with a parent when they were 3.

silverfish, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 19:38 (seven years ago)

I mean it's obvious... socks don't bend one way or the other

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 20:34 (seven years ago)

i have some socks with an embroidered logo on the outside and i put them on so the embroidered logo faces out, so the people can see my taste in socks. i always wear pants and it's covered up, but the inside of my pants knows what's up.

nomar, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 20:36 (seven years ago)

Savages, all of you.

Do the eeeL Roll! (Leee), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 21:45 (seven years ago)

Now I'm worried that I've been putting my socks on backwards this whole time. What if I'm hit by a truck while crossing the street and my shoes fly off and the horrified crowd that gathers notices this shameful sock flip-flop?

Let us talk about the real issue here - socks with chiral patterns that don't have a left and right.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 22:08 (seven years ago)

Specific running socks can have designated feet

Otherwise socks are socks

I'm me btw

Nb I was marketing executive over socks for a week once at an import/export company so that's not just yknow my opinion maaan

D'mnuchin returns (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 22:29 (seven years ago)

When I take socks out of the drawer in the morning, I don't think of them as left or right; they're just socks. However, if I take my socks off and then have to put them back on later the same day, I make sure to put them on the feet they were originally on. (I do this by placing each sock in its corresponding shoe while they're off my feet.)

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 22:42 (seven years ago)

It ought be said that the first sock in my hand goes on the left foot obv

D'mnuchin returns (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 22:55 (seven years ago)

I may be the only one here who abides by sock orientation, but that only makes me a visionary.

Do the eeeL Roll! (Leee), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 23:20 (seven years ago)

One day the darkness will lift from your eyes and see that a left sock is a left sock.

To know the sock implies you have something akin to a butt groove but for feet which means you have been wearing said socks for too long and ew.

Treeship, Saturday, 10 June 2017 00:29 (seven years ago)

i look at my socks carefully to see which one is more right and which more left (usually a tiny, maybe imperceptible, maybe unreal deviation at the big toe), and i'm devastated to see how much of an outsider this makes me

well wait, socks DO have a top and bottom

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Monday, 12 June 2017 18:52 (seven years ago)

not really

Dean of the University (Latham Green), Monday, 12 June 2017 18:55 (seven years ago)

most socks have heels sown into them, which means by definition they have a top and bottom; otherwise you have a flap of extra sock puffing out somewhere around your ankle

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Monday, 12 June 2017 18:58 (seven years ago)

that puff is to maintain air integrity on the dorsum mangamosum of the foot , for endurance athletes
