The Tree of Life, not even close

At least one of these is among the very worst BP nominees ever. And one is possibly the greatest nominee ever.

The Descendants and The Artist chewing each other's faces like the prisoners in the penultimate circle of hell.

with a helping of Help pie.

I saw all of these except Extremely Loud; thank God i'll never have to achieve that kind of ratio again.

War Horse isn't at all terrible: a perfectly boring '80s Oscar nominee that everyone forgets the next year

I have a friend who loved Hugo so much he saw it three times.

I liked Pitt in Moneyball, but as much as Pitt in TTOL.

i felt like that horse when i was watching all of these films!!

Hugo is the only Scorsese movie i haven't seen.

just at a glance this feels like the worst bunch of best pic noms i can remember right now. i also haven't see Tree of Life tbh, but i've liked or loved all of Malick's films so i suspect that would come out way ahead.

I only saw the Pitts. Probably liked Tree of Life more, but not that much.

as with trad Hollywood "true stories," 90% of Moneyball never happened.

I liked Hugo a lot at the time but have since felt no urge to rewatch. TTOL all the way.

Honestly don't know what of these can even viably contend for second place. Am hoping it's a clean sweep.

I've still only seen three of these, two of which might fall somewhere in the middle of the best movies I saw in a given month and are utterly laughable as nominees for the best of any given year. The Tree of Life, however, remains the best film I've seen from this decade.

There are two ways through life, the way of grace, and the way of voting for any of the other eight nominated movies.

i despise Moneyball and everything it stands for. i think that guy's useless and somehow makes dry, tedious films out of exciting-sounding material.

Also the roughest interview subject I've ever dealt with. Then again, I did come out of the gate demanding that he justify having beaten Godard at Cannes.

I didn't love The Tree of Life and I didn't hate The Descendants. That said, I will likely use this poll as an excuse to finally catch up with War Horse and/or abstain from voting altogether.

I liked Moneyball (yes, I know it wasn't as good as the book and they fudged all the baseball and they stuck in a dumb father-daughter subplot--as baseball films go, it wasn't bad) and War Horse, thought The Tree of Life was ponderous, hated The Artist, haven't seen the rest. A year where I had zero rooting interest.

The Tree of Life has horrifying moments, but the parts that work outclass the rest of this sorry lot. I didn't have a rooting interest this year either.

I only saw The Help and Hugo off of this list. Between the two, I liked Hugo more but laughed a lot more during The Help.

man what an awful list. I hated The Tree of Life, I refuse to see any 9/11 exploitation tragedy porn like Extremely Loud, and I haven't thought about The Help or The Artist in 6 years. But I loved Midnight in Paris, saw it two days in a row, it was revelatory and taught me something really important at a fairly young age: wallowing in nostalgia is a waste of time, and that whatever era you're in, there are always people wishing they were around 20 years before. Such a useful life lesson that many people don't figure out until much later in life. Genuinely thankful for that. Didn't see any of the others.

xp I should revisit The Tree of Life sometime. I was really excited going in, thought it would be this amazing all-encompassing meta-thing like Synecdoche, New York. I saw it with a friend in a packed theater the night it came out, and it was so depressing hearing him rave about it the same way I raved about Synecdoche. I've actually appreciated and enjoyed Malick's recent films more because they're so audacious and taunting, a middle finger to everyone that loved The Tree of Life.

do you really think TTOL was not audacious for contemporary American cinema? People were demanding refunds at the multiplex.

it was certainly audacious (i mean fuck, i just remembered the dinosaur scenes), but it was comprehensible enough for awards season and tons of fawning reviews. his last 3 films are like spiteful challenges to everyone that loved him in 2011, it's great

Had to check who the director was who elicited all the derision over Moneyball...I think Capote's excellent; haven't seen anything besides those two.
