Ten-year-old nabisco offTM:
Here's something funny: when I was ten years old I had a vague admiration for Donald Trump and Lee Iacocca (both very feted at the time) and a downright intense love of Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties, who I didn't understand to be something of a joke. As such, despite having really liked Mondale -- having a woman as a running mate impressed me, probably because of the mother/father dynamic of it -- I was convinced that I wanted to be a Republican and a businessman or lawyer of some sort. In fact, I started a "company" with my friends Brian and Jeff -- we made board games, and hired Tony, the best breakdancer I have ever known, to do the art -- and I was constantly attempting to read the law and economics books in my father's library. Everyone seemed to think this was "cute," though I sort of wish someone had just explained politics to me. In either case, I got over it quickly and went back to wanting to be a writer....― nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, June 14, 2003 1:28 PM (fourteen years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Part of my problem is that I have to do a lot of things myself. It takes so much time. Julio Iglesias is coming to Mar-a-Lago, but I have to call Julio, I have to have lunch with Julio. I have Pavarotti coming. Pavarotti doesn’t perform for anybody. He’s the highest-paid performer in the world. A million dollars a performance. The hardest guy to get. If I call him, he’ll do it—for a huge amount less. Why? Because they like me, they respect me, I don’t know.

Jon Stewart made this point last night... after a brief montage of talking heads asking 'how will this play with the maga base?'.. he explained (too) loudly that they're fine with it! The maga base has proven again and again that they're completely fine with everything, and are happy to move the goal posts again whenever they're told to
I guess the new tack is that nation building and regime change are just fine as long as they're for OUR benefit... which Iraq and Afghanistan were not, apparently

xxxpost but people keep conflating his 'base' with 'people who voted for him'. the people who propelled him across the finish line in 2016 and 2024 weren't his base, they were independent voters who have largely already turned on him en masse.
even his Congress is full maybe of 1/3rd full-throated enthusiasm, 1/3rd passive acceptance, 1/3rd "I'm scared of this guy and am too chickenshit to wind up in his crosshairs". I mean let's be real, Republicans are an 'ends justify the means' party and so legality isn't a dealbreaker for even the most Never Trumper, but you can tell from the weasel words some of the GOP use when asked to comment on some of the most heinous shit he's done on the record that they're just huge cowards who are afraid of a MAGA mob showing up at their house.
I don't see that part changing anytime soon because until the arrows fire inward at them, the GOP Congress would rather have soft autocracy that still allows them to have a big house than to get death threats daily. they do not at all think about what life will be like for them after this administration is gone.
