Ten-year-old nabisco offTM:
Here's something funny: when I was ten years old I had a vague admiration for Donald Trump and Lee Iacocca (both very feted at the time) and a downright intense love of Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties, who I didn't understand to be something of a joke. As such, despite having really liked Mondale -- having a woman as a running mate impressed me, probably because of the mother/father dynamic of it -- I was convinced that I wanted to be a Republican and a businessman or lawyer of some sort. In fact, I started a "company" with my friends Brian and Jeff -- we made board games, and hired Tony, the best breakdancer I have ever known, to do the art -- and I was constantly attempting to read the law and economics books in my father's library. Everyone seemed to think this was "cute," though I sort of wish someone had just explained politics to me. In either case, I got over it quickly and went back to wanting to be a writer....― nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, June 14, 2003 1:28 PM (fourteen years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Part of my problem is that I have to do a lot of things myself. It takes so much time. Julio Iglesias is coming to Mar-a-Lago, but I have to call Julio, I have to have lunch with Julio. I have Pavarotti coming. Pavarotti doesn’t perform for anybody. He’s the highest-paid performer in the world. A million dollars a performance. The hardest guy to get. If I call him, he’ll do it—for a huge amount less. Why? Because they like me, they respect me, I don’t know.

during trump's first term, i shared an office with an investment company and the guy who ran it --- the son of a very well known european financier --- often complained that melania was being unfairly snubbed by the media because she was the most fashionable first lady ever. he knew her socially apparently. this was the only real injustice of the administration that made an impression on him.

my sentence was unclear: he thought that she should be celebrated more for her taste and beauty. if she was married to a different president, he argued, she would be.
― treeship., Sunday, 1 February 2026 16:55 (yesterday)
Except that we celebrate lots of people for their taste and beauty. Especially when they are beautiful and have good taste. It's a whole industry.
But notice how basically none of the people we celebrate have a vibe that is so... remote?
I dunno Grace Jones or Brigitte Nielsen or Tilda Swinton or Cillian Murphy are attractive in somewhat austere ways. Opinions differ on them. But they but also seem... fun? Tyra Banks is fun. Melania just doesn't seem like she'd be fun to be around. That's okay, not everyone needs to be.

So he's gonna demolish the Kennedy Center too...
After a one year review of The Trump Kennedy Center, that has taken place with Contractors, Musical Experts, Art Institutions, and other Advisors and Consultants, deciding between either Construction with Closure and Re-Opening or, Partial Construction while continuing Entertainment Operations through a much longer period of time, working in and around the Performances, I have determined that The Trump Kennedy Center, if temporarily closed for Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding, can be, without question, the finest Performing Arts Facility of its kind, anywhere in the World. In other words, if we don’t close, the quality of Construction will not be nearly as good, and the time to completion, because of interruptions with Audiences from the many Events using the Facility, will be much longer. The temporary closure will produce a much faster and higher quality result! Based on these findings, and totally subject to Board approval, I have determined that the fastest way to bring The Trump Kennedy Center to the highest level of Success, Beauty, and Grandeur, is to cease Entertainment Operations for an approximately two year period of time, with a scheduled Grand Reopening that will rival and surpass anything that has taken place with respect to such a Facility before. Therefore, The Trump Kennedy Center will close on July 4th, 2026, in honor of the 250th Anniversary of our Country, whereupon we will simultaneously begin Construction of the new and spectacular Entertainment Complex. Financing is completed, and fully in place! This important decision, based on input from many Highly Respected Experts, will take a tired, broken, and dilapidated Center, one that has been in bad condition, both financially and structurally for many years, and turn it into a World Class Bastion of Arts, Music, and Entertainment, far better than it has ever been before. America will be very proud of its new and beautiful Landmark for many generations to come. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
