lol

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 27 July 2017 12:40 (eight years ago)

No, but if you'd framed the poll as which of the above listed we could do away with as well as freeing up the space and shoes used up by the ppl heavily invested in it then two billion Twitter users could die roaring for my part

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 July 2017 12:41 (eight years ago)

on the one hand, social media usage has negatively impacted my anxiety for a variety of reasons.

on the other, I had a few relationships start using social media (i.e. someone joining me for an open invite, or starting a convo which gave me the courage to approach them IRL).

so idk

Neanderthal, Thursday, 27 July 2017 12:47 (eight years ago)

social media is lulZ

put your hands on the car and get ready to die (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 27 July 2017 12:51 (eight years ago)

tbh I loved FB until it basically turned into:

1) people posting political links without reading them and then poster's friends waging ad hom war on each other in the comments sections
2) incessant GIF meme sharing

I miss the days where you couldn't even comment on FB statuses

Neanderthal, Thursday, 27 July 2017 12:52 (eight years ago)

Yes. My internet use is compulsive and these sites are bad for me. I try to keep them blocked in my hosts file.

jmm, Thursday, 27 July 2017 12:53 (eight years ago)

you can't stop the global telepathy

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:15 (eight years ago)

"Yes" or "No" would be a hard call. I'd revamp Facebook but keep it, get rid of Twitter, Instagram I have no involvement with. You're not including YouTube, right? Whether that's thought of as social media seems to vary. I think YouTube's possibly the best thing the internet ever came up with.

clemenza, Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:19 (eight years ago)

as long as we can get ride of youtube comment section it can stay

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:21 (eight years ago)

replace FB with CB radio imo, at least then you can tell if your potential stalker is a loud breather.

calzino, Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:25 (eight years ago)

right now i'd say yes. much as i love facebook

Shat Parp (dog latin), Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:29 (eight years ago)

I find it hard to block Youtube because of the endless amounts of music, but it's an evil life-destroyer also.

jmm, Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:29 (eight years ago)

I think it's fair to say that social media has had a net negative impact on my own life, and possibly on the world as a whole? I'm pretty much out of it altogether aside from reading tweets people link to and occasionally wishing someone happy birthday on FB. I guess other people get something out of it.

Chock Full of Love and Sexy Feeling (Old Lunch), Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:33 (eight years ago)

To expand, social media has been a bane because of the heightened expectations and anxiety it generates (also add texting to the pile) when I already have issues managing heightened expectations and anxiety, and its emphasis on ephemeral brevity seems almost...nihilistic? Message boards are cool. I kinda miss LiveJournal.

As a facebook, twitter, & instagram refusenik, I have no trouble voting yes. The news cycle might slow down from almost instantaneous to merely head-spinningly fast, but that seems more like a bonus than a drawback.

I've been mulling over zeroing out and/or deleting everything on social media and I finally decided to do it. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, etc. all gone.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 July 2017 08:45 (eight years ago)

taking awhile for Twitter, but it's next.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 July 2017 08:48 (eight years ago)

Please don't take away soundcloud!

I don't know too much about the others but i see a lot of people using Facebook on the bus. It doesn't look much fun on those little screens

saer, Sunday, 30 July 2017 09:12 (eight years ago)

Happily voting 'yes' from the comfortable position of not having to deal with whatever the unforeseen consequences would be.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 30 July 2017 09:24 (eight years ago)

And soundcloud isn't social media is it? Take away the timed comments, everyone will be happy.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 30 July 2017 09:24 (eight years ago)

yes. easily as I only use Twitter but by use I mean follow and laugh at a bunch of comedians and click Like once in a while.

Ste, Sunday, 30 July 2017 11:27 (eight years ago)

I voted "no" but only because it's too late to change the outcome of the 2016 election

Soundcloud has consistently been the only place where I get spam email.

Voted 'yes' without hesitation

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 July 2017 17:08 (eight years ago)

haha any time I get an email I know even prior to opening it's going to be something like "hi honey u have dicke i liek to see it"

weirder still was when one of my spoof doo-wop tracks wound up posted as part of someone's doo-wop mp3 collection that he shared to the net (according to Google)

Neanderthal, Sunday, 30 July 2017 17:19 (eight years ago)

"doing away with social media as we know it" will highly likely only lead to something way worse popping up tomorrow, so, no.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 30 July 2017 17:24 (eight years ago)

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 30 July 2017 18:55 (eight years ago)

I'd happily go back to the way the internet was in the late 90s/early 2ks: email, a few Usenet forums. Websites but without any fucking comments sections on articles.

We're specifically talking social media here so I also assume things like Spotify/Youtube are ok (surely people dont use that in a social sense urgh?)

I do love the customizable privacy settings on FB and always have. I now have a friend group enacted specifically to shield from my blasphemous and anti-Christian posts so they don't come crying to me like my mom did once on Thanksgiving

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 00:03 (eight years ago)

Oh Ive always filtered a huge batch of people out of all my FB posts. Whenever I dont, my mother txts me to comment. I whinged about a current back problem and now she wont leave me alone about buying show orthotics.

I deleted the FB app from my phone the other day too. I dont like how little control one has over anything using it (and how it gets its claws into your contacts and whatnot). Browser only, no Messenger.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 00:15 (eight years ago)

show = shoe.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 00:15 (eight years ago)

haha if I write about having the sniffles or being sore my mom (who lives like 15 mins away from me) asks me if I want her to bring me meds. it's adorable really (even if I keep wanting to say "MOM I'M 36!!!")

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 00:27 (eight years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 10 August 2017 00:01 (eight years ago)

OK. We've got our orders. Let's make it happen! First step: convincing a billion FB users to pull the plug. Seems like the best way would be to make a meme and post it on FB. amirite?

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 10 August 2017 00:05 (eight years ago)

first we have to embed ourselves in the social media world so that no one will suspect our true intentions. let's keep regularly using social media and then check back here in 10 years or so to kick off the second stage of the plan

Karl Malone, Thursday, 10 August 2017 00:10 (eight years ago)

I already done use twitter, never really have (I just dont *get* it, somehow). Its weird because I know a large chunk of my close friend groups have these discussions/plans I'm completely out of the loop about, because that lot, oddly, are all twittter only and refuse to use Fcebook.

So it goes.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 10 August 2017 06:45 (eight years ago)

what is social media? are we talking strictly the internet? are we including tabloids too? imo the benefits far outweigh the hazards. instant global communication. this is a huge step towards a real global democracy. of course there is a lot of trash but you know

ofc it is painful at first. we are hearing things that have been censored by the cultural hegemony for thousands of years. we are hearing it all at once. all the ideologies that for emerged in the social (and virtual/information/written/historical) realm over thousands of years. for the most part ideologies have remained isolated in bubbles, largely to due monopolization of the means of production.

we need time to adjust to the technology. the possibility of mass production of text and mass communication began in 1440, only 500 years ago. visual mass communication began in the early 1900s, only 100 years ago, and there were only 3 channels of TV until very recently. the internet is brand new and constantly changing. as time goes on and as evolve the social machine the useless name calling and destructive/waste of time rhetorical tricks will become obvious. we will realize how useless they are and use them less. things that are shocking will be things we have heard and responded to many times over. we will maybe realize that the internet tends to promote over-reactions and get less upset about stuff. i think social media is a good opportunity to learn how to respect each other's entertainment choices.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 10 August 2017 17:19 (eight years ago)

one year passes...

I've patched twitter, facebook and instagram. find you just end up missing things, or missing out on things, becoming slightly dislocated from your friends and what is going on in their lives. we're all so busy it's hard to get a lot of the colour of friends' lives except through what they post on fb

everything is co-ordinated via facebook too. seriously, if I didn't still have messenger feel like sometimes I'd have no window into some friends' lives. probably more of an indictment of me than anything. considering picking up fb/ig at least again. twitter I don't miss

hank, there's a reason you have paper all over your floor. turn your desk fan off. i know you've recently suffered a severe head injury but that does not mean that you cannot understand cause and effect

Karl Malone, Sunday, 25 August 2019 17:58 (six years ago)

This is more meaningful than 10 million likes or followers, no?

I think the difference is less about 'meaningful' and more about scaling up the 'meaningless' from an isolated newspaper stunt to the level of an unceasing avalanche.

I bet a lot of great art would have been lost to Twitter if it'd been around. If Hank had been coming out of a bad relationship in 1950, this is what you would've got instead of a song.

General comment, no idea where to put it. This happens over and over again with me and probably for a whole lot of people. You notice a post on your Facebook wall--you don't read it, it just barely registers; you notice a thread on ILX or ILM up near the top, same thing; another related post on FB six hours later, and then it finally clicks in someone famous died.
