I can't stop watching this video, and it's not just because of schadenfreude. It's also because of the hypnotic way it's presented, the way it's impossible to figure out what's happening to begin with, the way the sound cuts off - it's like dub! - in general the way the sound works, and just the weird angle it's filmed from. And I know I'm not alone, with a bunch of people writing about this clip:
I've been asked by my editor if I wanted to write a visual analysis of the clip, and it reminded me of this short film I saw a while back:
It's in Swedish, but the gist of it is, that the Swedish Democrats (the Swedish populist right-wing party, like the Front National) had become the third biggest party in Sweden, and thereby earned a leadership position in parliament. So everyone is voting 'blank' to avoid having to vote for them, and then they have to redo the vote over and over.
My question is: Does anyone here know of other films that draw on this aesthetic? I'd wager there will be more after this clip has gone viral.
