King Kong vs Godzilla

It could happen on land or sea. But which will win?

the pinefox, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think i know where this is going to go. anyway, its not the robots or the dinosaurs, its the camp japanese scientists in boiler suits.

gareth, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What if it were to happen in space? They could battle inside a Dark Nebula. And while we all know Godzilla can breathe in space, King Kong would need a giant space suit - he is after all inferior.

Godzilla would bite through the air tube of his stupid foe and win.

Al, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth you fool King Kong is not a robot he is a massive ape. Nor is Godzilla a true dinosaur rather a mutant born from atomic fire.

Tom, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kong wins because he is more poignant and liked to look up Fay Wray's skirt, the big ape. Also, 'King Kong' remake w/Jessica Lange actually quite good ("unfairly berated" as David Thomson says, tho' think he is also a Lange-fancier) whereas the Matthew Broderick 'Godzilla' is crap.

Andrew L, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes tom, but i knew that it would become the robot vs dinosaurs agument again, even though when that argument was taking place i wasn't even really listening.

gareth, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Godzilla for the Godzuki factor.

Martin, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Godzilla would win. Godzilla, your friendly mad insane FAMILY atomic mutant vs. what, a flipping overgrown primate. Now if King Kong had whooped in indomitable monkey style a little more maybe he could have won me over, but as it is - Godzilla with his fire breathing and flying ways - and TWIN FAIRY PRINCESSES is will equipped to scorch that disgusting "King" Kong back to the fecking jungle. Godzilla could do it with his hands behind his back and be back underwater by tea time. I reckon even BABY Godzilla could beat King Kong.

Go Gojirraaa!!

Sarah, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree that Godzilla would be strong at sea - and in space, for the reasons that Al pointed out. But surely Kong could get some blows in on his way down? I think that if the rumble happened in the jungle Kong might be able to use a swinging-from-trees factor, Godzuki factor or no Godzuki factor.

the pinefox, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kong is entirely outclassed Pinefox. What good is swinging from trees when Godzilla can napalm the trees with his flame breath attack? I think you are just trying to wriggle out of the fact that you have sent a heavyweight against a bantamweight in this match-up. Can anyone think of a deserving opponent for Godzilla - and not Mothra either who is a giant moth, come off it. Kong meanwhile could probably be beaten by Geoff Capes.

Tom, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, me and my hammer. Basher Hamilton vs Godzilla.

Emma, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think a suitable opponent for Godzilla would be Fatima Whitbread. I saw her at the zoo the other day, she was looking fighting mutants fit.

Martin, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King Kong vs Richard Keys could be intriguing.

Tim, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And confusing... I guess you'd give them different colour shorts.

Martin, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Areyou sure you didn't dream that bit, Martin?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely King Kong could put through a call to all his mates on the Planet Of The Apes, that strange monkey world so unlike our own.

Al, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

korrekt and satisfaktory opponent for g = mecha-g, as all know (= dinosaur vs.... ooh!!)

KK will be brought low by lurve, as are we all. (Except dave q, obviously)

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The problem is, King Kong is a slightly large ape. Godzilla is a giant dragon beast who breathes fire and stomps Japanese people. It's clearly an unfair fight. King Kong should get a partner, because that'd be fair. Like Mecha-Robert Smith.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mecha-Christina?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Godzilla is cooooool. You can't have fur and be cool. Godzilla therefore wins.

Lyra, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hold on. What sort of powers would this putative Mecha-Robert Smith have?

Tim, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um. Paleness.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

same as the small human one we already have, except he can go A GREAT DEAL LONGER WITHOUT SURCEASE OR PAUSE OR PIT-STOP

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, so our beloved underdog Kong gets the help of a mechanised, chubby goth (no additional powers edition) and that's a match for Godzilla? I think not.

Tim, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King Kong, mecha-Smith, plus a giant, mechanised Tom Jones with the tactical brain of Richard Keys implanted in it. Mecha-Tom has the power to roast exothermic creatures with one blast of his giant voice.

Now bring on Godzilla.

Tim, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about Mecha-Streisand?

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SURCEASE = most wicked cool word ever.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"no additional powers edition": who said this? I said he never stopped singing (or anything else, tho that is not irrelevant). Like Mothra has the Peanuts, only VERY TERRIBLE AND EXHAUSTING for all concerned.

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely the Power Rangers can fit in this somewhere?

DG, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Preferably between Godzilla's toes.

I want Voltron in on this bitch.

David Raposa, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Power Rangers are only invited if Pokemon are invited.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So what's with all you people who apparently HAVE NOT seen the South Park episode with MechaRobertSmith? You poor souls.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cue karaoke narrator: "Bah-bula!! Bah-bula!!"

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Gundam Wing will show up to! Those robots are pretty cool! But actually if every single Japanese pop culture super person turns up, that'd be pretty spectatcular. Anyway, Godzilla would kill King Kong on land or water.

jel, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned - was that the episode with the Scientologist cult and Barbra?

If so, then, no, I haven't seen it. ;-)

(Apologies for stealing your wink, by the way.)

Well, hell, if that Gundam Wing crap is going to join the party, then I want some ROBOTECH action!

David Raposa, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Godzilla = best monsta noize ever. Kong = Can't believe how easily he was shot off the building by those puny bi-planes shooting bullets the size of rice grains! Surely his thick pelt would have deflected most of them?
And his 'thing' for Fay Wray = wrongwrongwrong and never gonna work. ZoidZilla = best Zoid ever. 'Biotech is Godzilla' = best Sepultura song ever.

DavidM, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You have all written off Kong far too swiftly. He's enormous, remember? I think he'd give Godzilla the fight of his life. What's with all this mecha-Smith anyway? Can Smith and Kong get along?

the pinefox, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you the real Pinefox? This thread is a bit out of character, is it not? Are you a robot replica of the Pinefox? If so, will you be fighting Godzilla or Kong?

DG, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He could join King Kong's allied forces of Mecha-Smith and the Power Rangers.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The real pinefox is dead. I now live in its place. I have been fashioned by DJ Cockfarmer to debate monster-movie battles till the mechanical cows come home.

the pinefox, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is terrifying. First, ages ago, Mark S was proved wrong. Then the Anti-Carmody descended, and now the Pinefox is posting about GIANT MONSTER COMBAT. It's End Times a go-go round here, folks.

DG, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm all for Kong too. Yes Godzilla has superior weaponry but Kong is a naturalised American. Even without the advantages of superior technology and making everything small the Americans beat the Japanese in WWII using ingenuity. I reckon Kong has simian like ingenuity and therefore would Macguyver his way out of the situation.

Plus Kong has prehensile fur.

Pete, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PREHENSILE FUR???

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This IS King Kong we're discuss, not Medusa. Please keep this in mind.

How about odds on a Godzuki / Mighty Joe Young match-up?

David Raposa, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The end times don't happen until I start posting crap like "Golly gee whillikers, I sure love that there Rage Against the Machine band!" So fret not.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

AGES AGO MARK S WAS PROVED WRONG?

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Godzuki vs a Triceratops. Which will win.

This is the support act.

the pinefox, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

punc.: 'Which will win?'

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or 'a triceratops, which will win'.

Blame Tom. At least, I started making sentences out of relative clauses in imitation of his style.

youn, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom is responsible for many things, but not I think the pinefox's punctuation.

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, you made a minor error Mark, ages ago on ILM, so I'm not searching for it. We wondered then if the apocalypse was soon upon us...

DG, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fools! Of course the pinefox was right all along. 'Which' is the most ass-kicking of all ass-kicking monsters ever!

Kim, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kim is right: the Triceratops could be called 'Which'.

the pinefox, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Youn is right: I could be saying 'The Triceratops will win'.

I'm not sure about Ewing's role here. His punctuation is a special case.

the pinefox, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S is right: of course the sentence is not properly punctuated. I know that. It was a PUNCTUATION JOKE, a COMEDY FULL STOP.

the pinefox, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Disintegration is the best album ever!

Ally C, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King Kong + support from Andy Townsend's Tactics Truck = victory to Kong thanks to tactical superiority.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
The aspect of this fight that no one really tuned into is the fact that King Kong is so fucking emo all the time, let's be honest here. I mean, he just pisses and moans over some girl. I am pretty sure he's outclassed in all ways by Godzilla, or even maybe regular Robert Smith (much less Mecha-Robert Smith). I'm betting King Kong listens to a lot of Tori Amos, for example.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

you can all stop wondering because this actually happened! I saw the movie about 100 times but now remember very little. King Kong won, but by the end i think they developed a strong mutual respect for one another, as well as a ruefully ironic sense that they HAD to fight to the death because, well, they were giant monsters, what else could they do?

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Gamera is better than both.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

at what point did they decide to make out?

rainman (rainman), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Should a distinction be made between Japanese Gojira, and American Godzilla? Godzilla can be defeated by a couple of pesky reporters, and was even GOOD in the cartoon series for God's sake.
Gojira's pure elemental evil and has many monster-battle victories under his belt. Kong is a peace loving dude and therefore Gojira would send him to monkey heaven.

two years pass...
It's freshly relevant!

the snowfox, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

i havent seen nu-King Kong yet but it cannot possibly be better than Godzilla: Final Wars

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Brainless fire breathing lizards >>>>>>>> emo-apes

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Gojira/Godzilla become good in the later movies or at least become a pawn defending earth against evil alien monsters?

Anyway, Godzilla is like 3 times as tall as Kong unless you mean the awful Godzilla from the Broderick film who was much smaller, but still bigger than Kong.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

in king kong vs godzilla they made Kong the same size as 'Zilla.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Don't you people remember how Kong put paid to the T-Rex back in the day? (And if you don't, surely there is a version of this sequence in the new one?) Although, yeah- admittedly Godzilla, as a space-age mutated dinosaur, might have a few new tricks up his sleeve that would have been unknown to his stodgy, stuck-in-time Skull Island counterpart.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Only nipponophiles and Raymond Burr fans pick Godzilla.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

What have you done with Gojira, Thorwald?
