― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 02:00 (seven years ago)
I had a fun day today, though I was a bit narked that they'd run out of ground passes so I had to buy an Ashe ticket and the line-up was nothing special.
Watched the following:
Kvitova d Jankovic - Petra still inconsistent and a bit sloppy and her serve just isn't the weapon it is on grass but I thought this was pretty encouraging against an opponent who has given her trouble in the past. The US Open has actually been her best or joint best slam since her Wimbledon win. Funny it used to be her worst, and still is I guess.
Kukushkin d Ferrer. I had no data and the screens around the place don't give you any idea of what's coming up and this court was buzzing so I stepped on with no idea who it was. Ferrer started well but then he WOULD NOT EVER VENTURE INTO THE COURT, and Kukushkin was very happy to mix it up, go to net and finish the points off quickly. Once he got used to Ferrer's patterns, it was a cakewalk.
Shapovalov d. Medvedev. Medvedev has passive body language, the yips on serve and is a massive wimp. Shapovalov thinks he's a rock star. This was so NID, but there were lots of nice flashy shots.
V. Williams d. oh god I can't remember her name. Viktoria K..zova.. from Slovakia. She's a serve bot whose face looks about 10. Venus won this without her serve which was sort of impressive but she looked sloppy as hell I thought.
Tipsarevic d. Kokkinakis. See the Ferrer game. Kokkinakis went in front of the service line maybe once that I saw.
Was tempted to watch Shara/Halep on the screen but I was hungry and wanted to beat the rush. Going ALL DAMN DAY TOMORROW!!!

its such interesting circumstances that were sharapova to pull this out, i wouldnt argue too much if one called her the fav to win the tourney? tho she may lose

― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 02:07 (seven years ago)
Oh and Ferrer lost a bit of momentum after the match was delayed 20 minutes or so after a crowd member fainted, or something. I found the rubbernecking really creepy. Like, do you need to be staring at this sick woman?

That was pretty fun to be witness to live! Great atmosphere, though I've got to say, the ground staff are WAY too lenient on letting people up during play. Melbourne or Paris spectators and ground supervisors would not allow people to be sitting in aisleways etc
Also I got my photo taken with Venus Williams, which almost made up for not getting a refund on my ground pass for today due to five minutes of matches happening.
Poor Kerber, a few months ago she was #1, now she's out of the top 10. Osaka sure looked good today, and feasted on that powder puff serve.

A lot of players are wearing really fugly kits. A.Zverev's definitely the worst, not having to see that again almost makes up for the shock of him losing to Coric, who will probably lose the next round. That side of the draw, honestly. Cilic must be laughing so hard right now.

Trying to tell myself that Sharapova/who?? and Isner/Zverev will be entertaining tonight.
Nadal/Daniel was at least good fun with some great courtcraft from both.
― oh, boy, .GIF! That's where I'm a Viking! (edwardo), Friday, 1 September 2017 19:13 (seven years ago)
Isner/Zverev actually was entertaining. Man, it takes balls to S&V on everything on this slow-ass court, but Zverev did that and bossed it. Very impressive to watch it in person.
The Sharapova match was fucking dire, I couldn't at Kenin being in the 3rd round - she'd get to a point mid-rally where she wouldn't know what to do so would hit a moonball mid-court. She said Sharapova was her idol, pshaw to that, looked more like she looked up to Wozniacki. Sharapova was dreadful and still won in straights. Should have been 6-1 6-1.

Sloane/keys is a great final
― johnny crunch, Friday, 8 September 2017 11:19 (seven years ago)
The Sloane/Venus match was great, or at least the last set was. My kids don't even know anything about tennis but they got totally sucked into it, wouldn't go to bed til it was over. I was torn because I've loved Venus' late-career run, but I like Sloane and we got to see her play live last Sunday so I feel invested in her here. I'll be happy for Keys too if she wins, though (which looks likely after the way she's played).
― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 September 2017 14:14 (seven years ago)
Last night was the first time I've seen evidence of the Keys that American commentators have been hyping. No choking, no inexplicable letdowns, no sudden tentativeness, just full-on "I am going to hammer you off this court now" tennis and it was glorious.
I will admit that I felt a little charity towards Vandewedge when I saw her congratulate Keys warmly at the net afterward; fortunately it didn't last and I'm now back at "lol you got stomped".
― this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Friday, 8 September 2017 14:55 (seven years ago)
Stephens' last three matches have all followed the same template -- win the first relatively easily, total nosedive in the second, recover in the third. If Keys plays the way she has been, I don't know that Sloane will get an opening to do that again.

watched the nadal/del potro semi yesterday. will probably always root against nadal but i really wanted to see juan martin cap off this run with a title. he just didn't have it
no idea who kevin anderson is and don't care tbh, he's 31. pretty embarrassing that he's in the final
only watched the last game of the women's final. does keys not have a first serve? or had she abandoned it
― k3vin k., Saturday, 9 September 2017 21:30 (seven years ago)
Nadal is 31!
― Spottie, Saturday, 9 September 2017 21:36 (seven years ago)
Kevin Anderson is a servebot noteworthy for being capable of beating Wawrinka and nobody else. Nadal will liquefy him.
I am sad Stephens, not Keys or Venus, won this. I guess she's not actually worse than Ostapenko (albeit without her astonishing peak) overall but... meh. The women's game really does need Serena back ASAP, Kvitova to consolidate her recovery, Kerber to get her shit together, and, I hate to say this, Sharapova and Azarenka.
― oh, boy, .GIF! That's where I'm a Viking! (edwardo), Saturday, 9 September 2017 21:38 (seven years ago)
i think the recent trend of guys coming out of nowhere in their late 20s and early 30s is really bad for tennis
― k3vin k., Saturday, 9 September 2017 21:39 (seven years ago)
Why?
― Spottie, Saturday, 9 September 2017 21:42 (seven years ago)
tennis is a star- and personality-driven sport. people want to watch the best players they've actually heard about play the biggest matches. when marcos baghdatis (to pick an example of another went on that run a decade or so ago it was exciting because it was a young guy with a fun game that we hoped could be sustainable and carry the sport into the future. i don't think anyone outside of australia expects to be thinking much about kevin anderson in a month from now
― k3vin k., Saturday, 9 September 2017 21:57 (seven years ago)
whoops forgot to finish my parenthetical thought
main point is it's just lame when nobody journeymen are playing on the biggest stage. i like tennis a lot and there 0% chance i will watch the final tomorrow
― k3vin k., Saturday, 9 September 2017 21:59 (seven years ago)
One of the most bored crowds I've ever been in was watching Anderson being beaten easily by Berdych in Melbourne one year.
I think you mean nobody outside South Africa.
― oh, boy, .GIF! That's where I'm a Viking! (edwardo), Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:00 (seven years ago)
I mean it's a nice story for him I guess. But his path to the final wasn't that much harder than Nadal's.
― oh, boy, .GIF! That's where I'm a Viking! (edwardo), Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:01 (seven years ago)
Anderson's boring because he's boring, nothing to do with his age or career achievements to date
― cerealbar, Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:02 (seven years ago)
yeh i see that. i kinda like it with dudes like del potro who are good then fade then come back but i guess thats a diferent thing. would be nice if the US could produce a good fun male player.
― Spottie, Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:04 (seven years ago)
the list of players age 30 or older with <5 career titles that would actually put on a show during a grand slam run is probably pretty short
xp
― k3vin k., Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:05 (seven years ago)
yeah del potro is a different story, he's inarguably a grand-slam quality talent, his career's just been marred by injury
― k3vin k., Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:06 (seven years ago)
parallel to just the age convo -- tennis channel aired indian wells 1999 steffi graf vs serena yesterday and i watched some - steffi was 29 serena was 17, steffi retired from the sport ~5 months later o_0
steffis form also sortof reminded me of modern day fed
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:17 (seven years ago)
i like watching journeymen break thru / go on runs @ majors but do agree in general abt k3vs pt for the casual tennis fan & the overall visability of the sport
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 9 September 2017 22:18 (seven years ago)
Watching a journeyman break through is cool, but this is a half that was meant to have Murray in it, and some subset of Djokovic, Nishikori, Raonic, Wawrinka. If he'd got through the best in the game, I'd applaud. But his run was ridiculously easy (and you wouldn't say Gulbis was a hard R2 opponent if you'd seen his R1 match) for a maiden GS, and definitely doesn't stack up well with the first runs to the final by most others (cf Wawrinka's '14 AO. That's a tougher run.)
