sick in summer

I have a cold; I feel awful. Shouldn't illness be reserved for cooler weather?

matthew, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It depends how you caught the cold. If you caught it through kissing someone (preferably who you shouldn't have been) on a hot balmy summers night, then it is at least entertaining. If however you are just WEAK, then you have the same immune system as my own fair self and welcome to the club. SNIFF. Colds in summer also mean you can't wrap yourself up in blankets else you would DIE of SWEAT.

Sarah, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have I ever told the massed ILE throngs that I an Unbreakable. Well. I am.

Pete, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're just trying to get off games or something YOU WHINER.

Tom, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unbreakable = property of robot made from lead.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dear, I've already told everyone I'm sick ALL YEAR ROUND. Illness knows no season.

Seriously, if the temperature goes up and down you can get sick. Also, during hottest summer months places tend to use the A/C which means closed ventilation which means stale air, so you get more germs that way.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can't we bend him?

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He'll bend, but he won't break.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a cold all year long so my sense of smell is shot. It's allergies but I don't want to take medicine constantly, so I deserve it. Illness should be reserved for the dead of winter when it's depressing already (say February), and November, when all the trees are bare and the grass is dead but there's no snow.

Lyra, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The big flaw in my vacation was in fact My Sickness, which while not incapacitating was pretty damn annoying, lots of tissue used up. I still haven't worked it all out of my system either. Hmph.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"lots of tissue used up" = grate line from medical sci-fi horror movie

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*snarls, drips acid from teeth that eats through three floors* Time for your very unintentional double hernia.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never have a cold for longer than a day. But I am allergic to dust. The allergy has gradually worsened. Now it's so bad, I can't sleep at night. Matthew, it could be the same. Do you know if it's a cold or is it just a runny nose (???). Do you have headaches?

nathalie, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So I suppose this cold (definitely a cold) isn't going to be helped by staying out to 1 am in a smokey club. But tomorrow is Saturday so I can do nothing all day and plot...[evil laugh]

matthew, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
So it's the second week after my last semester of university, and this has really only been my first weekend off because I spent all last week writing my overdue senior thesis and I've contracted this horribly virulent bronchitis/pneumonia thing. I used to get it as a child and I haven't had it in a few years but it's back. It involves hocking up huge neon green wads of thick phlegm and not ever being able to get a decent breath in so that I swear the ends of my toes and fingers are turning purple and I'm seriously worried that I might get some kind of brain damage from lack of oxygen. I just know I got it because my immune system was weakened from the lack of sleep and stress of that last month of the semester which was just hell. I hate that I get this hanging-on-for-dear-life shit when everybody around me basically gets the sniffles. Healthy bitches.

Being sick in the summer is awful. I feel dreadful and am at work but can't go home because it's y first day back after vacation. Wah!

ENBB, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

I got food poisoning the week before my birthday (lost so much weight I had to make a new hole in my belt) and now, the following week, I have a really heavy cold. Good times. I sound like I have TB, so none of my friends will even come near me : (

caek, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

And the weight is back on!

caek, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

I spent the first week of a two-week vacation sick. When we left, I had a 102 fever. Two days later, the fever was gone, but I had a sore throat. Two days later, the sore throat was gone, but I had a scratchy throat. Two days later, the scratchy throat was gone, but I had pink eye. Finally, I went to an eye doctor where we were vacationing, and got heavy-duty prescription eye-drop antibiotics. That did the trick.

Good times!

I feel like a sack of crap that's been repeatedly shotgunned. I think that the recent rains have woken up some plant that hates me and wants me dead. I stayed home from work today, mostly just laying in bed, suffering and filling a cup with phlegm, snot and saliva.

I'll probably go back to work tomorrow, though, since y'know, I have to.

Just coming to the end of a minor summer cold here. I did pick it up while on holiday in foreign climes though and managed to keep it at bay till I got home, so it wasn't all bad by any stretch.

krakow, Monday, 16 June 2008 06:59 (seventeen years ago)

Eurgh just getting over a stomach virus, was feeling horrible last night but went to see YMO and sweated the fever out into the rarified climes of the Royal Festival Hall. Which was nice for me, less nice for the people in the adjoining seats. Fever sweat does not smell pleasant I have to say.

Ugh being sick in the summer is the worst. Thankfully it's chilly here so it's not too bad but ARGH I feel like crap.

sloth say hi to me (ENBB), Thursday, 11 June 2009 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

For some reason I'm humming this thread title to the tune of Prince's "Sex in the Summer", which is kinda wrong.

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 June 2009 12:22 (sixteen years ago)

I woke up w/a sore throat this morning and am going to be pissed if it turns into a full-blown cold.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Thursday, 11 June 2009 12:26 (sixteen years ago)

:-( I hope for your sake that it doesn't.

sloth say hi to me (ENBB), Thursday, 11 June 2009 12:39 (sixteen years ago)

same here, jaymc. my mom has a full-blown cold, so it might, but i'm hoping the allergy medicine i just took will fix it. i hope you feel better later today!

Maria, Thursday, 11 June 2009 13:35 (sixteen years ago)

this is the worst. the worst! my vacation week, a fever of 103, and a new apartment sublet with gallons of white fucking cat hair.

remy bean, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

exact same with me, woke up middle of the night with mouth all dry and sore throat and have a real foggy headcold today. it sucks. thankfully I was on a course tho keeping my eyes open was incredibly tough.

Local Garda, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

Most of the last ten days = wretched. Currently more at 'annoying but liveable' level.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

I've been sick a full month. Probably allergies. If it turns out I'm allergic to cats I'll be thrown out of the house (can't compete with those adorable bastards). Good thing I don't have health insurance and will never know.

sciolism, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

girlfriend just one-upped me on the fever: 103.2. criminy.

remy bean, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

Jeez, I thought my 101.8 was bad.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

it's all terrible. once you breach the decidedly woozy threshold, i think it's just a matter of semantics.

We (husband, I and oldest daughter) all seem to have this fucked up cold. Especially when we lie down, we end up coughing like mad. I stayed up till 1:30 am. Okay okay also because I kept playing Lexulous on my iphone.

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

First the sodding swine flu. Then, when that had started to clear, I caught my colleague's headcold. Now I've got a sore throat/coughing/achey cold. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Viruses of the world, just leave me alone.

I know my immune system must be shot, but honestly, this is just getting ridiculous.

Your Mother Smells Of Elderflower (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 09:16 (sixteen years ago)

I hate being sick in the summer, because for the first couple of days you don't realise that you're sick, you tend to attribute it instead to the weather being hot.

grocery groin (snoball), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 09:24 (sixteen years ago)

had a tickle in my throat before i went to bed last night. was awakened by loud flatmate sex at four, and found that not only could i not swallow, but my pillow was covered in insane amounts of muscusy saliva.

feel better than i did this morning, but fuck dude, i can't do this right now-- my checks clear and i get paid tomorrow! i was gonna rage. flark.

Don't think I'm quite as bad off as Ronan but this still sucks. Sick in summer is the worst. Bah!

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Saturday, 18 June 2011 13:10 (fourteen years ago)

yea i get crazy heat headaches :/. the worst is when the days go from hot to cool to hot to cool and your body can't get used to it, but well mother nature solved that problem with a heatwave

busiest week of the work year + summer cold, couldn't sleep last night, now tired as fuck but not sure i'll sleep any better if I still can't breathe

can buy like 10 minutes of breathing by taking cold/sinus pills but the caffeine and pseudoephedrine combo doesn't really help with the sleeping either

thanks for advice! have done the beer thing already but the rest sound like a good plan.

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 18 July 2011 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

I find the Vicks gave me that ability to breathe I required when I couldn't blow my nose any better. My manager swears by warmed ..rye? Something like that; I was lazy and made a faux whisky sour. I boiled the ginger for 2-3 hours; it cuts like a knife but when you're sick you can't taste that sharpness so it's not too bad.
