5 stars from The Guardian
― Eazy, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 17:00 (seven years ago)
alexander payne getting five stars in the guardian is basically the trooping of the colours
― imago, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 17:01 (seven years ago)
Yes, but what kind of stars?
That concept seems like it could be either Being John Malkovich brilliant or utterly new age insufferable.

This might be the most conflict-free trailer I've ever seen. Seems like being really small is good and...that's it?

I see the thread title and think, "He's out of money?"

I've already linked this review elsewhere, but it's scared me away:

This is easily at the top of my do-not-want movie list.

early reviews all over the map, but i don't get a good feeling

what is it about Payne that gets certain critics a-slobber -- his posturing? his supposed insight into the lower American middle class? Guess he reminds them of themselves.

Residual goodwill for decent early work that should've dried up the instant About Schmidt was released?
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 September 2017 19:09 (seven years ago)
this is a movie about literally shrinking people wtf

"I mean, look, I love movies, not just the ones I make... In fact, I don't like the movies I make very much" - Alexander Payne

Sideways is one of the worst films I've ever seen, but I've read some encouraging things about this one.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 19:24 (seven years ago)
This has Kristin Wiig and Christoph Waltz in it. You'd have to literally put a gun to my head to get me to watch.

On Alexander Payne's very great Downsizing, for @Artforum: https://t.co/xGgrRBy3h2— BANDZ STACKHAGE (@NickPinkerton) December 20, 2017

Caught that too and it's the only thing other than the inevitable supporting actress nomination that's going to force me to watch it.

might check this out today while I wait to visit the folks
― fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 December 2017 15:03 (seven years ago)
Loved this. Matt Damon fucking sucks and Hong Chau's character was so broadly drawn and poorly written (90% of the humor is from her aggressively broken English), but it was creepy and ambitious and very funny and very sad. No idea why it's getting such mixed reviews, mostly on the negative side. Loved Christoph Waltz and Kristen Wiig (even though she dipped out pretty early on).
― flappy bird, Sunday, 24 December 2017 22:24 (seven years ago)
Noticed the guy that played the principal in Election played Wiig's dad here.

oh yeah, the cameos in the first half were neat- especially Laura Dern

This was my least favourite movie of 2017 - just unfocused and all over the place. Sure some neat ideas, but that for me just makes the horrible execution all the worse. Clockwatching from an hour in.
Also, I find it bemusing that the broken English of Hong Chau was being used for laughs. Ugh.
