this is a very ilxy tangent which wld probably merit the titular deemsian rejoinder, but I feel like there is something affirming, comforting about being one of the lads sometimes. everyone says men are bad at looking after themselves & each other but the concept of lads has warmth and affection in it as well as the other stuff, which is why a lot of guys I know only use it semi-ironically
