it deserves a thread even though it ain't happenin no more

this is so much fun and rewarding - don't binge it, though. it should be a nightly thing! or less frequent! it's really worth looking forward to at the end of the day. There's so many aspects of it that are really breathtaking - the landscapes, the kung fu, the kurultai gangster politics.

When I watch it, the parts I love most are when they really put a lot of time and words towards emphasizing a (real or imagined) diversity of thought and backgrounds that comprised Kublai's empire, and how that made him better equipped to crush the living shit out of various small-minded townies i.e. all of southern china. Mongolia, fuck yeah.

Also the casting is just delicious. So many amazing looking people! Not all of them are good at acting, really, but GoT has made a shitload of money off of this flavor of expeditionary ensemble drama stuff, all they did differently was pretend the ending wasn't obvious and put in a huge dash of occult. I blame the failure of this show on a complete absence of marketing and the fact that everyone knows all the principals died 710 years ago

Benedict Wong's Kublai Khan was absolutely immense imo. I never believed he was anyone other than Kublai Khan when he was having the vanquished boiled alive and so on. Such a towering presence, he looks bigger than any dragon!
