have you been to either of these places? are they nice?

looks like i may be getting a low budget weekend somewhere in europe in december (even though america basically cleaned me out financially!)

so, koln? or strasbourg? or what about la coruna? somewhere else? (difficult with december weather though)

Köln and Strasbourg are both very nice. Strasbourg is by far the prettier place, Köln the more lively. Good food and drink available in both places. Can't go wrong with either one.

go for La coruna!! close enough to Finisterre to visit, amazing food, good football, good bars too.

I haven't spent that long in Köln and my German extends no further than "can I pay with this credit card? *waves card*" but it seemed fun and has nice record shops. As a Schlammpeitziger fan you might want to visit A-Musik records on Kleine Griechenmarkt, it's a tiny shop so I don't want to build it up too much but I liked it, a nice range of cheap second-hand stuff and unsurprisingly they have most A-Musik and Sonig releases. There's a weird Hungarian bar opposite and a nice Italian restaraunt a block or two closer to the centre as well. :)

http://www.uni-koeln.de/phil-fak/fs-muwi/platten/ (good guide to Cologne's record shops in German; there are no maps but I found a German map site which would look them up from the addresses on the site, can't find it now, will see if I can find the printouts at home)

I know nothing about Strasbourg, sorry.

of the three i've only been in strasbourg so i can't make comparisons. however strasbourg is great. yummy food, wine and beer. a wonderful mechanical clock in the cathedral. pretty squares and streets. the river ill winding round the place.

search: tarte flambe, picon beer, vendage tardive gewurztraminer, and the clock.

Been to Strasbourg twice in the last year or so. Lovely city. And a good jumping off point for Baden-Würtemburg (The "Black Forest" region of Germany). Very warm in spring and very hot in summer. I see you're thinking of going in December, tho' - could be colder than you might think.

I might be going to Köln in December. That part of Germany is famous for Christmas markets so I hear. And they're real eat-and-drink fests, not just rows of market stalls.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

(I kind of overlooked the "low budget" requirement with my post, sorry)

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Did go to Strasbourg on the French excange from our school, but unfortunately the only thing I can remember is having to go to sleep with the Diary of Anne Frank above my bed after just having been to visit Le Struthof. Harrowing. But then that word has always quite neatly summed up French exchanges.

If you are in Strasbourg you might hear people talking in Alsatian, their regional dialect. Angela - what does it sound like?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

woof, woof, woof.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

oh my sides.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

if i go to koln i'll visit the place where anthony braxton recorded his solo rec 'koln 1978'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Very little Elsässisch to hear in Strasbourg -- you've got to head out a bit toward the country. It sounds like Inspector Cleusseau speaking German.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Ironically then only alsacian word I know is for a backward country person. But I donlt know how to spell it - it sounds like "kekus".

I gather its very nice in Strasbourg before xmas with all the decorations and stuff/

tigerclawskank, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

so strasbourg seems to be just ahead of koln, with la coruna trailing in 3rd place. what should i do?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 October 2002 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

b b b b but hardly anyone's been to La Coruna so there won't be anyone else to speak up for it.

chris (chris), Thursday, 31 October 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth, do you actually, you know, eat + stuff or are you always saving up for your next trip abroad?

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 31 October 2002 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha! i'm going to an ethiopian restaurant in tufnell park tonite!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 October 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

other than my america trip, i have only been to berlin this year

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 October 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, i'm leaning towards koln, but strasbourg seems to be cheaper, who should we fly with? and wheres a good place to stay that is cheap

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been to Koln, Gareth, and I loved it. The cathedral there is incredible. It is one of the largest gothic buildings in the world. The picture I emailed you before the DC FAP is me near the top of the cathedral.
Also, if I remember correctly, Kompakt records is located in Koln, so you can stock up on vinyl or cds. I am sure that it will be easier to take vinyl back from Germany compared to the USA, right?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

it actually seems cheapest and most convenient to go to Bilbao...

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

that will be nice too. when are you headed out?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

w/e of dec6, or maybe dec13 or nov29

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth you will bloody love Bilbao, lots of industry, the guggenheim, a fantastic railway that goes all along the north coast. Bloody marvellous.

chris (chris), Saturday, 9 November 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
ok, i'm on the verge of booking cologne, just sorting out the dates (15-19 dec i think)

jeff w, when are you there?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

coming in late I know, but I believe we may have 'place' related interests in common.

Koln v Strasbourg cathedrals is a hard one to call. Koln is the original all singing all dancing Gothic collosus - one of the largest buildings in the world. Good climb up tower, some (not many) breathtaking artefacts, such as the shrine of the three kings, one of the most important in Europe, and some good stained glass. BUT like all really huge and perfect buildings a little soulless - partly explained by it having been largely finished in the c19, a German nationalist project inspired by discovery of original drawings.

Much of the rest of the city centre was bombed by us, and is more like a livelier version of Plymouth. There are likewise other important and amaxing churches -- rebuilt after the war.

The modern art gallery next to the museum has a first rate collection of c20 German art. Lots of neue sachlikskeit ('new reality') stuff, which is full of the drama of the 1930s and very relevant now.

Near there we saw a street called Judengasse, but I'm sure this is a translation problem.

Strasbourg I've not been to, but I believe much more of the medieval core exists, so a more 'charming' place; culturally interesting because of that Alsation german/french border business.

If I had the choice I'd go for this cathedral over Cologne cathedrals: the west front of Strasbourg is genuinely breathtaking, much more tense and imaginative than Cologne's Cecil B De Mille approach to architecture; inside much of it is c13 and c12, so again more dark and interesting than Cologne. There's a famous column lined with beautiful angels all the way up.

Germany gives good Xmas: you'll come back with much more tasteful kitsch goodies than you'll find here, if that's your bag.

Not a translation problem. Every big city in Germany and Austria has a street of that name.
