Oh, well, that image is dud. I would be on board with more people dressing like this:https://i.pinimg.com/originals/7f/37/b3/7f37b32c25aa0be80843b4449af8b6f0.pngor this, though:http://www.ivy-style.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/2e50616734f95f1b_large.jpeg

dressing up is fun
― brimstead, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:28 (seven years ago)
it's not fun to make fun of people for wearing harmless costumes anymorethey're not hurting anyone, their costumes don't affect me at alli guess that makes them classic

the weirdest is when one of these folks whips out a cell phone
― brimstead, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:33 (seven years ago)
please note that i never personally found it very enjoyable to make fun of other people's clothes in the first place
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:33 (seven years ago)
I think there may be some kind of rockabilly fascist underground, but when I think of that look I think of roller derby gals and they're good in my book.
Waffle factor: guys in bowling shirts.
― ... (Eazy), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:37 (seven years ago)
i like the look. most of the people i've met who do this are okay. that said, it's a bit 'saddo' imo
― FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:37 (seven years ago)
I wouldn't pass judgment on the people themselves but I personally find the aesthetic in the OP unappealing. I also don't come across anyone who does this, however.
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:41 (seven years ago)
Yeah, these people tend to be alright, imo.
― how's life, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:47 (seven years ago)
i don't make fun of them. i guess i'm just amazed that its still a thing almost 70 years later!
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:47 (seven years ago)
I respect their commitment to what is essentially p silly.

Something to aspire to tbh
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:49 (seven years ago)
I associate this look with people who are into burlesque and are in bands that (try to) sound like Nick Cave. Seems much less of a thing in London than it used to be, I think beards have done for it.
― Action of Boyle Man Prompts Visitor to Stay (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:56 (seven years ago)
why dress like this when you could go steampunk instead
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:56 (seven years ago)
Tom D OTM although it seems VERY popular among 40-50 y/o Home Counties proto-hipsters. mookieproof also OTM in that it's only a hop skip and a jump to steampunk, fogeyism, 'I hate hip hop' etc

― brimstead, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:02 (seven years ago)
istm most people dressing like the '50s are really dressing like juvenile delinquents of the '50s
― Josefa, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:14 (seven years ago)
dressing like you're on the set of Grease
imo dress however you like, but be wary of others finding connotations
― mh, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:15 (seven years ago)
They're not dressing like Stafford Cripps, that's true.
― Action of Boyle Man Prompts Visitor to Stay (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:15 (seven years ago)
seems to be popular with middle-aged former indie kids. also significant crossover with the US workwear urban lumberjack look.
― mahb, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:16 (seven years ago)

growing up in the 70s, the 50s were obviously very much with me. they were everywhere. in the 70s there were lots of little osmonds...dressed like greasers.

it's kinda cool but in a cute way
similar to how winnipeggers were the only ones in canada who still dressed as mods in the 90s/2000s or whatever

I have a friend who is very full on rockabilly/50s fashion and it looks amazing on her. She's a fashion stylist and does all sorts of amazing looks but her personal style for as long as I've known her (~ 12 years) has always been this 50s rockabilly thing. She and her like-minded friends all go to a big get together for it in Vegas every year. http://www.vivalasvegas.net/ Not my thing but she looks gorgeous and obviously enjoys it so classic.

i do think mike ness is kinda dud. he brings out the vintage tattoos in people like nobody's business. fyi: his two 1999 solo albums sell for about a hundred bucks apiece if you have the original vinyl.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:25 (seven years ago)
those early 90s social distortion albums go for dumb money too. they are a cult unto themselves.

― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:28 (seven years ago)
The singer in my current band often has a vintage/rockabilly thing going on. She's a great singer first and foremost, but she's also into 40s-60s fashion, hats, hair, makeup. It's not quite my thing, but I can see why people find it compelling.
From a purely selfish perspective, as a bandmate, I'm grateful for it. If there are people who want to see the band partly because the singer is hawt in a vintagey way, then so much the better. Our music will reach an audience that it might not have if it were just dudes like me (aging burb dads in khakis).

Before I opened the thread, I honestly expected that it was going to be about people who dress unusually formally/conservatively in a world of T-shirts and tats, not people who are into rockabilly.

some people can really pull this off and look great, others not so. certainly doesn't seem as prevalent as it was in the 90's, to me.

the casual everyday suit is not something that exists where i live. i like them though! i am all for nice suits. i don't think i could ever wear one without looking like a hobo though.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:02 (seven years ago)
heh "only hobos wear suits"
― Evan, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:05 (seven years ago)
I find a well-made suit is super-comfortable, I would totally wear a suit all the time if they weren't so expensive and difficult to care for
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:10 (seven years ago)

ha yeah unsurprisingly this does not seem like a thing black people do (as opposed to latinos, whites, asians). apart from the Nation of Islam, I guess.
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:22 (seven years ago)
The Peaky Blinders style has usurped this style.
― Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:31 (seven years ago)
peaky blinders HAS to be top five all-time alt-right t.v. show, right? i mean, the alt-right must have a list of their favorite things. and i would think they would be all about that show. and every viking show.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:36 (seven years ago)
scott's initial post seems more costumey than everyday wear for these types
but there's definitely an overlap with the group of people I think of as "grown-up post-hardcore/90s ska kids" where there's a strong 50s-ish greaser/rockabilly/workwear thing going on
I'm definitely not in that group but there are a couple places I go around town where these ppl hang
― mh, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:36 (seven years ago)
"ha yeah unsurprisingly this does not seem like a thing black people do"
african-americans have definitely done their part to keep the olde-tymey suit alive though. even if that olde-tymey suit is occasionally purple.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:37 (seven years ago)
I can't remember when it was, but I walked by a nightclub in the twin cities that was 90% black people in the most amazing formalwear that I would never be able to pull off in my life and it was amazing
white men can buy a good suit, but there's an entire ability to be absolutely great-looking in a suit that I'll never attain
― mh, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:41 (seven years ago)
yeah, that's why i don't try. i really do look like i mugged an old man for their suit. i will wear a jacket on occasion.

I'm a big fan of this era and look, a gal who knows how to rock the vintage will always turn my head, but the pic in the OP is way too satiny and, as noted upthread, costume-y.
― the young, low level volunteer named (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:56 (seven years ago)
that is a costume at the top. i just did a quick google.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:00 (seven years ago)
as has been pointed out upthread there are a fairly large number of people that dress this way in southern california ... ime this is sometimes associated with racist / sexist / otherwise retrograde attitudes, and sometimes not. also sometimes associated with shitty music (social d etc) and sometimes not.
what i find infinitely more interesting in my corner of the woods are people who still dress like quadrophenia mods, complete with scooters
― the late great, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:02 (seven years ago)
lol i find that infinitely more lame, sorry
― brimstead, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 22:43 (seven years ago)
those guys are real pricks, imle, lol
there i go being a hypocrite again oh well
The one person I know who does this is a German woman and she really does go for it and has the house to go with it too. The amount of effort is kind of awe-inspiring. Everything is just right. Having said that, while I think she looks very good and I appreciate her commitment I also find it pretty naff.
― Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 22:48 (seven years ago)
Ive a friend who is a very highly regarded vintage clothing seller (she's supplied hollywood, dita v-t etc) and she does a great turn in this look, and 40s looks too, not in the tacky "i went to a costume rental" way like the pic in the top post but proper, of the time wear.
her and other friends like to do the vintage hair as well, the fingerwave set curls and the big top curls and such.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 22:51 (seven years ago)
But yeah the whole burlesque/roller derby/big 50s hair combo was a weird outburst, with all that faux rockabilly tatts n polkadot skirt thing.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 22:52 (seven years ago)
xps well fwiw i meant "interesting" as in "strange" (because unlike rockabilly culture it never really historically existed out here) not "interesting" as in "cool"
