NYC -- Fancy a Skate?

The FT article about roller rinks got me nostalgic -- I haven't gone skating in years. Is anyone interested in joining me for some roller skating? There are a couple of rinks in NYC, like the Empire Roller Skating Center (formerly "Empire Roller Disco") in Brooklyn.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how to roller skate but I'll go.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 October 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes me me! (I've got my own sordid skate history to relate.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 31 October 2002 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

How about ice skating? It'll be cold enough soon, brr!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 31 October 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i love skating so much. i don't live near nyc, but it's a great idea and you should all go because skating is the best thing ever. (ice skating is best).

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 31 October 2002 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

When when when should we go? I'd prefer to go on a weeknight (I'm free every night except Wednesdays and some Mondays), so we can avoid the big crowds.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm no good at ice skating.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone here always wants to go on weeknights to do things, you breaka my heart. But I can't skate anyhow so you all don't want me there, tho could provide excellent pictures of me falling on my ass repeatedly.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 October 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, you want to do a weekend, we'll do a weekend. How about the second Friday or Saturday in November?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

No I was teasing, if weeknights are better for everyone else do a weeknight! Though if those days are good for you I will definitely be there.

I'm sorry for being so whingy about weeknights, I work til 8pm (unpaid overtime of course) so I always miss things when my friends do weeknight things so I always get left out.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 October 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna do what's best for everybody. < /martyr>

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i will fall down repeatedly but ok

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 31 October 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably will too. Like I said, it's been a while. I used to be great at it -- now, who knows?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I broke my arm roller skating when I was nine (wearing my Pac-Man skates!) and though I've strapped on the wheels a few times since then, it makes me fairly nervous.

I suppose I could be lured out, since it is so newly trendy and since I am so generally game. I think I could do November 9.

However I am mad for ice skating! And tis the season! There's a fine fine rink near the top of Central Park that I go to, which because of its uptown location is considerably cheaper and less crowded (though perhaps proportionally less festive) than the city's other ice rinks. Mary? Who else?

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 31 October 2002 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't gone ice skating since seventh grade. I'm a good sport though -- I'll try it, and if I suck, I'll sit on the sidelines and cheer everyone else on.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 06:02 (twenty-three years ago)

mind your teeth on the floor, everyone.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 31 October 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I only read this thread because I thought it was about fish. Bugger.

lol p xx, Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i only read it cos i thought it'd be skateboarding. bugger.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

oh i love roller skating!!

maura (maura), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I only read this thread because I thought it was about fish. Bugger.

I was biding my time waiting for some smartass to say this. ;-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, so Ally, Daddino, Paul, Geeta, Maura, possibly Mary. Anyone else? Does Yancey fancy a skate?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Possibly. Depends on the whens the wheres the whathaveyous.

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now we're looking at Saturday, November 9.

I just called -- their regular Saturday night skate ends at 9:30 pm, but they have a late-night skate starting at 11 and going on until 4 am. Admission is (I think) $10, which includes the skate rental fee.

It's the Empire Roller Skating Center, 200 Empire Boulevard in Brooklyn.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I would kind of prefer Saturday afternoon (unless they serve cocktails at night, but I think only the Roxy does that).

I could make it Sat. night though if that's what everyone prefers.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The after-hours skate is adults only, so they probably do serve alcohol.

(I'd love to do the after-hours one -- I'm a night owl, and I've got nowhere to be on Sunday.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

DRUNKEN ROLLER SKATING??? Oh my god, I had no idea this existed, I'd have been roller skating years ago.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 1 November 2002 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Innocent girl. Probably you think squash is just for the exercise too.

I'm down for the night of the 9th.

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 1 November 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

This invitation still stands. We need to work out the logistics of meeting up -- the rink isn't in the best neighborhood so I think we should travel there as a group.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's meet in Manhattan (East Village/L.E.S.) around 9, get our drink on, and share a cab (or two) to Brooklyn.

Someone pick a bar.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 November 2002 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

are you guys going to dress up? you should at least wear legwarmers, if not full spandex bodysuits.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

legwarmers have made a big comeback here.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

let me know when the full spandex bodysuits make a comeback and I might move to the USA.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

they are only back in st paul mn so move here and bring extra bodysuits

Josh (Josh), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to wear legwarmers and flashdance clothing and a ponytail off to the side of my head, ok?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS EVER. Because lord is it bad.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't watch that movie and not feel REALLY BAD for Gene Kelly.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, if it helped cover costs for his later years (aka, Laurence Olivier syndrome -- which Kenneth Branagh has effortlessly reached in middle age).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone pick a bar.

Ace Bar, 531 E. 5th St. bt. A & B.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Ace Bar around 9, then.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 November 2002 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I will (probably) be wearing a hot pink shirt, and looking around like I'm afraid I'm being stood up. How will I know you all?

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

They'll be the ones standing you up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be the one singing "I Fought the Law."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 November 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a pic of me on this thread.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 November 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

So how did the roller skating go? I apologize for rushing out like a madwoman but there were personal issues at hand.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't actually sk8 but the place itself rocked! plus the DJ was terrif. wanna do a FAP there, except there's no alcohol served

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 11 November 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The place was even better than I'd hoped it would be. Great atmosphere: the perfect blend of goofiness and skating-veteran seriousness. Synchronized roller dancing and freestyle acrobatics. LOVED the DJ -- his name's Big Bob and he's been spinning classic R&B/hip-hop/club tracks there for about 20 years. I'd go back just to hear him again.

I skated for a total of 20 minutes. The old JBR roller magic is gone. I got out there and my knees wobbled like crazy and I fell down twice. But I got to watch Paul Eater, who (that bastard) is a great skater!

Also: We went to White Castle afterwards.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"Great skater" meaning that I didn't fall. But I think that the other people who go to the Empire Roller Rink on Saturdays at 2 am have very skating-focused lives.

After considerable practice on the little practice rink, I went around the big kids' rink a couple of dozen times and everybody was staring at me because a) I was white and b) I was skating normally, rather than downrocking backwards at 15 mph, balanced on my head and one skate and vibrating the other leg. Flashback to seventh grade.

I third the enthusiastic DJ-approval!

Ally: I thought Grumpy Cabbie was holding you for ransom. Was he thrilled to have a fare going back?

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, the Grumpy Cabbie was ecstatic that I was returning with him. It cost a bloody arm and a leg though, I was ready to just jump the fair on the highway.

The rest of my night was very strange and pointless but I had to go be a good friend and that kind of stupid ass crap.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"Great skater" meaning that I didn't fall.

Nah, you looked comfortable up there in that first rink. Whereas I was like "Hmm. I wonder what will happen if I let go of this raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

So when are we gonna ride the subways all night?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Next weekend. If it doesn't end that way, I'll be disappointed.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Not fair. You buggers. I went roller skating in Colorado last week (I'm back in England now), and it was ace. NOT AS GOOD AS ICE SKATING though. Yes?
