I always thought it was really weird this 'SWF' cliche in US classified ads. Made me think that America had a much more serious racial divide than we do. I mean people just wouldn't say that here - it would somehow sound like you were some kind of white supremacist. Racism here is more polite and insidious.

But these aren't like the big deal things, those are just moderately annoying sidebars. The really huge thing is that I have come to believe she's trying to break up my relationship so that she can have all my attention; the more I get into relationship, the more ludicrious claims get made to freak me out of said relationship. I have to really thank Ned for giving me vital proof that this weird oddity was occuring, actually.
What the hell is the solution?

Bridget Fonda's only good movie was _A Simple Plan_ - discuss.

2. The film, I'm afraid, is actually quite poor.

I watched the documentary on the Kindertransport yesterday and when they were talking about how Parliament approved the motion authorizing it (and how a similar bill died in committee in the US), it struck me how civilized Britain is. This is just an impression based on a single incident (actually, a few others), but it's like the bottom never falls out from under you cos you have faith that people will behave in a certain way. Even if from day to day the English parents were cold or brusque with the refugee children, they still took them in.

I'm glad this thread exists but disappointed by the content. SWF is almost totally classic. Good suspense, good exploitation, excellent early-90s computer content. I think it should be shown to every college girl who has roommate issues (i.e. every college girl).

Did anyone see the sequel to this? Bizarrely turned up in my local library's DVD section!
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 31 May 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)
MWF?
― Eazy, Saturday, 31 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
Single White Female 2: The Psycho, and its from 2005.
Wiki says its 'unrelated'...
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 31 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)
Was the original very popular? I'm having trouble coming up with reasons to do a sequel over a decade later.
― RabiesAngentleman, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)
i wanted the original to be SO good, but it wasn't. or at least i don't remember it that way
― Surmounter, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)
I did too, but if I recall correctly my teenage mind was really only in it for the potential boobies.
― RabiesAngentleman, Sunday, 1 June 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
haha... it was on tv the other night and didn't seem as awful as i remembered it. it's such a perfect movie for me in theory, i think i need to watch it again.
― Surmounter, Monday, 2 June 2008 01:25 (seventeen years ago)
I just watched it on Oxygen at, like, 10 a.m. on Friday. That there's some really heavy procrastination. It's not very good, but it IS very camp - death by stiletto, gay bff waking up in the bathtub, etc.
I was weirded out when i logged into ilx and saw it as a thread revive - almost like someone was watching it exactly when I was watching it!!!
― aimurchie, Monday, 2 June 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)
haha well i think Oxygen's been running it!!
― Surmounter, Monday, 2 June 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i only watched it because it came on right after two episodes of my new favorite show - "Snapped!". Oh, and also I was procrastinating doing ANYTHING EVEN MODERATELY PRODUCTIVE until the afternoon. I was also around the age of the characters around that time in the early '90's, so it's always fun to revisit those fashions. I did not have a rent controlled ten bedroom apartment at the Dakota, however, more's the shame.
― aimurchie, Monday, 2 June 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)
I watched this as part of a final paper I did on late 80's/early 90's conceptions of women in mainstream film. It so full of great "women are really fucking scary" "oh my god what if she's a fucking lesbian HOLY SHIT FREAKOUT!" stuff.
― en i see kay, Monday, 2 June 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)
Definitely, and with lots of soft porn touches. Now it's apartment porn - even my rich NYC friends don't live in anything like that apartment.
i also got queasy about the racist SWF thing, but nobody ever used that advertising for a roommate - it was used in personal ads, which were considered slightly illicit way back when.
I'm obsessed with the bathroom in that apartment. probably because it's the size of my kitchen, also because i want a stand alone shower and an eight foot bathtub.
― aimurchie, Monday, 2 June 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)
omg Snapped! is such a ridic show
― Surmounter, Monday, 2 June 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)
You mean ridic as in great, I assume.
― aimurchie, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)
yes, it is great. and creepy!
― Surmounter, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)
i saw this in the theater. wtf I must have been having a boring week.
― akm, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)
It’s about to leave Criterion so maybe I will watch for the first time since it came out when I really enjoyed it.

OMG there is a shot of Bridget Fonda walking by the Beacon Theater and the Marquee says something like Miller Lite Presents The Pogues featuring Joe Strummer.
― Poor Little Fool Killer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 30 July 2023 21:34 (one year ago)
It’s weird all the negativity upthread, but I see some respectable posters on other threads giving it some love.
― Poor Little Fool Killer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 30 July 2023 22:01 (one year ago)
I kinda liked it when it first came out, but I want to rewatch it after listening to the recent You Must Remember This episode on it
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 July 2023 23:45 (one year ago)
Oh right, they are doing a huge thing on 80s and I guess 90s Erotic Thrillers now, aren't they.
― Poor Little Fool Killer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 30 July 2023 23:46 (one year ago)
Yah, both the Erotic 80s and 90s series is really well-timed and some great cultural criticism. I just watched The Hand That Rocks The Cradle for the first time because of that YMRT "Blanks From Hell" episode I linked to. (it's schlocky Hitchcock, but ok)
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 July 2023 23:55 (one year ago)
I've never seen that one, but I went to college with the screenwriter. Didn't really know her but we did cross paths since she dated my friend's roomate for a while.

I remember not liking SWF because JJL's character becomes such an extreme monster. She is an interesting character for the first half or so of the movie, but it all gets pretty silly iirc.

Not a good film, in part because it knows what to do with its queerness and what not.

when I was 13 I visited a friend's home for the first time and the walls of his bedroom were completely covered in all sorts of nonsense including a poster for SWF, which is the second weirdest movie poster I've seen in a bedroom
the first is when my preschool-age brother was allowed to buy a poster from the video store to place above his bunk bed and he chose this:

Don't know where to put this, but this video of "Images of Heaven" is kind of a variant, parody or compendium of sexy 80s video cliches:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8CascX0wtQ
― Poor Little Fool Killer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 1 August 2023 15:58 (one year ago)
There was actually an earlier one which was more directly raunchy.
