Plastic Surgery: C/D, S&D

I've always hated it on account that most facelifts I've seen are terrible, and at least half the nose jobs as well. Lately, though, I've been thinking that maybe when I get old, I'll for the full-on scary catwoman look. I mean, everyone's going to know you had it anyway, so...Or maybe I'll go futuristic and get some implants in bizarre areas of my face. That way, I won't have wrinkles and saggy jowls but I also won't be one of those pathetic women pointlessly trying to avoid aging.

Maybe this thread has been done already, but tough shit! I couldn't find it in the archives....

Kerry, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You say "plastic surgery", I think "Joe Pesci", and I'd scream if I weren't in a semi-public place right now.

DUD. Work with what God gave ya, and deal with it. (And, yes, this topic has been brought up before. But, hey, tough shit.)

David Raposa, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aw, c'mon Dave, yer no fun. ;) I wanna see some arguments *for* plastic surgery, especially any and all pretentious pomo defenses of it along the lines of : a means of altering nature, as a form of body modification, etc. Maybe the problem is that plastic surgeons just aren't *creative* enough. Or maybe some people have libertarian or feminist defenses of it: "it's your body" - I'd like to see those.

Kerry, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm no fun? Girl, that hurts right here. I'm plenty fun (as long as the activities are planned responsibly and monitored with a vigilant eye).

How's this - I think people should only have plastic surgery if they're going to DRASTICALLY alter their physical features as to look freakish and wierd. Like Michael Jackson, for instance - he looks like an anorexic albino Diana Ross with peachfuzz. What's with this trying-to-reclaim-youth crap - accentuate, don't regress! Kerry, your plan for the wacky implants jives with this thinking, so good luck and God bless (and make sure to send me pre- & post-op pics, please).

I wonder if any Trekkies have thought about getting surgery to look like a Klingon... You'd just need to shove a horseshoe crab shell under the skin of one's forehead, yes no?

David Raposa, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's the name of that artist who is basically turning herself into a Klingon (or a Borg) as part of a long-term conceptual art project? Last time I saw pics of her she had horns implanted in her forehead...

Andrew L, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Customisng your own body = classic. Customising your body due to perceived societal pressure = dud.

DG, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Olean , no she is transforming herdelf into the great works of westrern art hmmm ?

anthony, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do whatever you want to yourself, it's great. I just get sad when I see people who have had it done really badly or got really obsessed with it and kept doing it and fucked themselves up.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's up with that catlady, though - Jocelyn Wildenstein, is that her name? Is she doing that to look unusual, or is she just trying too hard to defy age-related gravity? And that performance artist's name is Orlan - I've seen her book and it's pretty funny.

Kerry, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Orlan = mad as a banana but a way-cool pioneer of uglification. Plus when they were doing the op for the horns, they had to work out a way to reroute the nerves which allow face muscles to work expression-wise = breakthrough surgical technique now used in reconstruction of accident victims' fizzogs hurrah... I am sad wild-style cosmetic surgery has not yet caught on, but street-prices are still of course prohibitive.

mark s, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic. If only because I have close friends who dealt with an inferiority complex. After the operation they were a new person. Not only physically but also mentally. I am all for it (in moderation).

If it wasn't for plastic surgery my lip would have been cleft (?) after that nasty bite my dog did.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate the whole Wildenstein family. They personify the phrase the Banailty of Evil. Whores , they are all fucking whores . They use their power to push good art out of the way for another round of naked chicks. Let HIV postive monkeys anally sodomize them .

Thanks for the name clarifaction. I would like to reitarite that i do know my shit its just vague at times. I always feel embarrased when i do silyl mistakes like that.

anthony, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's done wonders for Pete Burns. He now looks like Cher at her peak. Wish I could say the same for Cher herself.

Arthur, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The thing is, we only really notice the bad facelifts, boob jobs et al. I'm sure there's plenty of cosmetic surgery that has worked a treat. I've got nothing against in principle, other than the money would be better spent on the poor children.

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, Anthony, don't worry - I just thought it was a typo. I only put the correct spelling in so people could google her - I didn't want to be pedantic.

Kerry, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Being a nose fascist I am very in favour of nose jobs, indeed whenever I see a rich person with a crap nose (e.g. Steffi Graf) I scream 'God, you'd have thought with all their money they'd do something about that nose'.

i don't know what to say in response to that

Surmounter, Thursday, 14 August 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

madonna's work is doing her no favors but an "aging gracefully" madonna was never in the cards

velko, Thursday, 14 August 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

steffi graf is uncommonly beautiful. she'd be unrecognizable if she got a nose job.

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 August 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

i always thought she was kinda cute, great legs too

madonna's doing something to her face because she looks 35

Surmounter, Friday, 20 March 2009 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

It's a bit weird when your face looks 35 but the rest of you looks 60 though

It's not all a bad thing. Look at Susanna Hoffs, lead singer of the Bangles (who is 50 now!)

(i don't know if she ever had work done or not but let's just assume yes)

Just saying, the good plastic surgery - the kind that's basically undetectable, not the Joan Rivers kind, can definitely be a very good thing

frogbs, Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

not to mention whatever work Christie Brinkley is getting done...unreal

frogbs, Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

During her appearance on 'SVU,' 37-year-old McGowan was virtually unrecognizable, seeming to have dramatically altered her gorgeous face even more since her initial visit to the plastic surgeon's office. Not only did the actress look noticeably slimmer, her face appeared stiff and partially immobile.

"I think she's had soft tissue fillers injected into her face, into her lips, her cheeks, and that has led to a more unnatural look," says Walden, who believes that McGowan's altered facial shape may be the result of jaw line fillers or a chin implant.

In addition, "It looks like in the past she's had her nose done," adds Walden. "The bridge has been narrowed, and the tip looks more refined."

McGowan's overworked face has also led to her appearing older than her 37 years.

"She has a crepey look to her skin, which is a lifestyle thing," says Walden, who suggests that long hours on sets may be prematurely aging the actress. McGowan's seeming penchant for facial fillers isn't helping either. "Being over-injected early on can lead someone to look older than their stated age," warns Walden.

Yeah I sorta get depressed about stuff like that.

Kim Kardashian's another one...I believe she is still in her 20's but is getting Botox all the time and apparently has had a lot of work done to the point where she looks like a plastic doll rather than a real human, which sucks because despite really not liking her she was ridiculously good looking.

frogbs, Friday, 25 March 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

I was pretty shocked to find out recently that several women I know my age or a couple years older (in one case younger) have had either Botox or fillers.

Dr. Park’s is a top-ranked clinic in Seoul’s “beauty belt,” a swarm of hundreds of plastic surgery clinics clustered around a string of subway stations in the upscale districts of southern Seoul.

this whole article is like a william gibson or neal stephenson passage come to life

One consequence of the boom is that young women look increasingly alike, doctors say. “They come in with photos of starlets whose face they want to copy,” Dr. Park said.

“Koreans agree on what constitutes a pretty face,” he said. “The consensus, now, is a smaller, more sharply defined youthful face — a more or less Westernized look. That makes 90 percent of Koreans potential patients because they’re not born with that kind of face.”

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Friday, 4 November 2011 11:00 (fourteen years ago)

wow that article

so depressing

and the 21-year-old quoted at the end who got double-jaw surgery, who says a guy complimented her on looking younger than she is? she's 21!

frogbs, Friday, 4 November 2011 13:51 (fourteen years ago)

tbh part of me feels that if you are going to a hotel to have a procedure done, you've already made peace with the general concept of someone injecting heavy duty glue into yr butt

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Friday, 2 March 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

"Got his new abs on display like they’re fresh dinner rolls out the oven!

Ab etching is an add on that you can opt to do while you get Liposuction. The surgeon carefully sculpts the fat around your abdomen area to give off the appearance of abs. The results are very fresh, it’ll settle over time."

frogbs, Sunday, 1 March 2026 03:14 (two months ago)

plastic surgery is much a larger category than elective cosmetic surgery. that larger category includess many useful aspects, for example with treating burn victims or repairing cleft lips. those could be placed in the 'classic' folder.

elective cosmetic surgery that is purely for selecting one's 'looks' to conform to some idea of more perfect beauty seems dud more often than not. there could be exceptions but there are countless examples of bad choices happily facilitated by plastic surgeons.
