I was walking up my street on my way to see the UK Subs tonight and a fucking badger ran out in front of me. I'd been told by my next door neighbour that they had to sign something saying they wouldn't dig up any badger setts when they bought their house, but I've only ever seen foxes around the end of their garden where these alleged badgers were supposed to live, and foxes and badgers don't really get on. So I was like yeah right, badgers live here. In the middle of a town. Come on mate.
But they do! Badgers live here!

Here in San Francisco, in the single-family home section of town (but still definitely inside the city limits) I saw a coyote (basically like a wild ~15kilo dog) at sunrise one morning.

foxes are majestic. i saw a pair of them running through the snow a few weeks ago.

Alternately, small dogs are a big problem in L.A. and coyotes and mountain lions are just taking advantage of favorable conditions?

there's a fox or two in the neighborhood I live in, one was in our garden once a year or two back. magic. jealous of the Colonel's badger sighting, what better thing to see of a winter evening than a lovely badger

That's a repurposing of the old looney tunes line "Rabbits. I hate rabbits. If there's anything I hate more than a rabbit, it's two rabbits." which sometimes I think is my favourite joke of all time

I always thought of badgers as slow moving creatures for some reason, but apparently they have a top speed of 19mph? (though only over "short distances") I'm now kind of curious about whether I would be able to outrun a badger

American badgers seem pretty badass according to this (or maybe they were just running out of viable 'nightmares of nature' candidates by the time they got to card 117 and American badgers are actually nice?)

one thing i miss about glasgow and environs is the urban foxes. otoh in vancouver i have seen skunks and raccoons by the thousands (both v cute, both a nuisance) and even a coyote.

Always hope to see a raccoon when we are in the US, never have. I did see a skunk once in Cape Cod. And I saw a chipmunk in Big Bear. Love all these mammals.
Loads of foxes round here, I just saw one an hour ago on the way back from work. It's a tough old world when foxes have to get jobs. Sorry.

No one I know in Wisconsin has ever seen a badger.
Also they're supposed to be dangerous assholes, correct?
― change display name (Jordan), Monday, 15 January 2018 22:08 (seven years ago)
The worst thing about urban raccoons is that every raccoon in your neighborhood goes to the bathroom in the same spot. And if that spot they choose happens to be in your yard...well... It's awfully hard to convince them to go elsewhere.
― fajita seas, Monday, 15 January 2018 22:53 (seven years ago)
Love 2 c badgers but they're big strong heavy fuckers and don't give off an air of make nice they are the Tony Soprano of the local wildlife around here gimme yr fox anyday always on the make
― remember the lmao (darraghmac), Monday, 15 January 2018 23:08 (seven years ago)
in my experience, raccoons rarely cause trouble
for the most part i remember being taught to be more lenient and let them do their thing because they would eventually leave and are not harmful
if they became a nuisance we would call the municipality but this never happened in my experience with these little guys
to be honest i always loved the beaver more than any of these other rodents
― infinity (∞), Monday, 15 January 2018 23:27 (seven years ago)

if you are seeking out dangerous asshole animals, bypass badgers and go directly to wolverines (aka 'bearcats'). they make badgers look pretty mellow.

― El Tomboto, Monday, 15 January 2018 23:36 (seven years ago)
fair enough but the only thing making raccoons a non-rodent is the lack of incisors
other than that they rummage through your trash and house like rats do
