Least promising Sequel/Remake/Franchise Flick of 2018

I'm admittedly intrigued by the three 80s comedy remakes, mostly because I'm surprised that anyone thought the originals still had enough currency to make these.

Voting for Solo, because everything about it bugs me (not the least of which is that I will probably be dragged to it).

When my daughter, and for that matter my wife, learned there would be a Mamma Mia sequel, they each wondered how they can do that when they used up all the top tier ABBA songs in the first movie. I get it, but is it really called Here We Go Again?

The trailer for the animated "spider verse" movie looked pretty awesome actually.

If we are staying true to the title of the thread, that new Jurassic Park sequel looks truly dire, people have been mocking the trailer for months. Many of these, we've barely gotten more than a title.

You know, these are the types of movies that should get remakes. No reason to reboot an awesome movie like Total Recall, just take a movie with a grabby premise and blah execution and tighten it up

Mostly only interested in the MCU stuff, the Disney/Pixar stuff, M:I6, Pacific Rim...I dunno, mmmmmmmaybe X-Men (last one was pretty bad, and these shits are likely to get rebooted soon anyway). The rest I don't really GAF about. Solo is the first SW movie I have basically zero interest in.

'Oh this thing is amazing and I love it and I want to celebrate my love by creating a shittier version of the same thing' is a mindset that never made sense to me. Off the top of my head, I could probably think of twenty older movies with interesting premises but shoddy execution and which are ripe for a reboot. But let's make a new Casablanca, why not.

i suspect universal's continued failure to float a 'dark universe' movie which is met with anything other than critical and box office derision might be dissuading others from putting their heads above the parapet

it's a real catch-22, cuz the thinking is that people will only go to see remakes whose names they recognise, but people only recognise them because the originals were a success and thus shouldn't be remade

actually now that i've mentioned it maybe someone should have another crack at making at catch-22 movie - the 1970 movie is interesting but flawed, and the book still has a fair amount of cultural cachet, right?

seeing the words Bumblebee: The Movie (from the "Transformers Universe") brought real tears to my eyes, but remaking Death Wish in 2018 seems like maybe the worst idea here

Yes, David Lagercrantz has added the fourth and fifth (The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye - good review here) books in that series. The plots are more movie-friendly (introducing a new character that's a soap opera trope), but they're good beach reads.

"Valley Girl", much like "Footloose", should just be an update with more CW-level telegenic stars, a worse soundtrack, and no Nic Cage with triangle-shaped chest hair. Surprised this got greenlit before "Pretty in Pink" or "The Breakfast Club".

See a lot of these tanking ("Robin Hood"), but a handful succeeding wildly ("Black Panther") to continue the trend.

I agree in theory, but Valley Girl and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, while hardly masterpieces, were fine the way they were, imo. Also, the latter is already a remake (of the David Niven/Marlon Brando comedy Bedtime Story).

So Robert Eggers isn't doing Nosferatu anymore but now a guy who did a very low budget Caligari remake is.
Mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I'd like good directors to avoid franchises and remakes like the plague but on the other hand they could get more money/opportunity to do certain genres in a more extravagant fashion and Taylor-Joy (she was previously attached) would have been awesome in it.

A remake is in the works as a limited series on Hulu,George Clooney to co-direct and also play Cathcart.

I'll reserve judgment but at least he's smart enough to know he's too old for Yossarian now. For all its flaws the Nichols version had a tremendous cast!

Voted Avengers:Infinity War - That storyline in the comics is crazy enough and Thanos just is not going to translate to the big screen at all. The last few Marvel Universe movies were just CGI puke and jump cuts and battles that made little sense - this will keep the trend.

I don't think that's true at all (the last sentence). at least not with Civil War or Guardians 2 (Ragnarok I was lukewarm on).

so apparently it turned out to be a fake sequel/remake/franchise flick, and the hype (such as it was) was just to rope people in for a twist super bowl fake trailer where it turns out at the end that the whole thing is an ad for australian tourism. seems like a rather expensive and elaborate zing when they could have just... run an ad for australian tourism during the super bowl. whatever anyway, the poll is unblemished though so that's cool.

So bummed right now. Wanted to see how big a knife McBride would brandish.

I know these characters.

The existence of Pacific Rim Uprising initially puzzled me, as I was under the impression that the first one flopped, and according to Wikipedia it was "the rare English-language film in history to cross $400 million while barely crossing $100 million domestic." Makes more sense now--the studio is obviously counting on this making a killing overseas--but why is it being marketed so aggressively? I've seen more TV ads for it than for Ready Player One.

Hypotheses:
1. If you’re watching things other than basketball, ad space is probably relatively cheap this month
2. Given that ratio of domestic vs international earnings, probably easy to justify a much bigger US promo budget for the sequel

It's weird that the campaign is so faceless though. Most of the subway posters I've see are just robots (which don't have super memorable designs) and it's like, y'all know the star of your movie is famous, right?

I just this minute discovered that del Toro is not directing the new one.

I'm sure this guy's just as good.
