I read it a couple of years ago and thought it was either complete bollocks of a brilliant joke. But don't just take my word for it, what do you lot think?

I own it because of the history. The fact that she thought Andy was a paragon on masculinty, the way she allowed fags to live under her mad matricachy ... insane but amusing !

Manifestos = Classic Societies for cutting up men = Dud

Momus, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry...'complete bollocks OR a brilliant joke'. This book was really the final nail in the coffin of the old Manics-loving DG - reading it with the knowledge of how keen they are/were on it, as if it were ABSOLUTE TRUTH, finally made me realise how full of shit the MSPs are. My favourite bits: any where Ms Solanos invokes SCIENCE to SCIENTIFICALLY PROVE men are rubbish.

DG, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But men are rubbish.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's only cos of all the trashy chicks.

Pete, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Humanity is rubbish. I want to start the Society For Cutting Up Everyone.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SFCUE? Catchier name, please. SLICE = Society for Lovely, Intricate Cutting Entities.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, we can't turn every thread into a Richey Manic thread.

Ally, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

D'OH!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love the SCUM Manifesto. It's ace.

"Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic- minded, resposible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex."

Now THAT is what I call an opening line.

I mean, yeah, as a manifesto, as a call to arms, as an attempt to bring others on side, it totally sucks. But it's just hugely entertaining to read. It won't change the way you see the world, just make you think "What the fuck - she's a nut!"

jamesmichaelward, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It WILL happen

maryann, Saturday, 18 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love it. I love anything that's anti-family. And she's right about men, too. Any male who isn't a total bastard is probably pussywhipped.

dave q, you have encapsulated the very essence of gender struggle.

six years pass...

The sick, irrational men, those who attempt to defend themselves against their disgustingness, when they see SCUM barrelling down on them, will cling in terror to Big Mama with her Big Bouncy Boobies, but Boobies won't protect them against SCUM; Big Mama will be clinging to Big Daddy, who will be in the corner shitting in his forceful, dynamic pants. Men who are rational, however, won't kick or struggle or raise a distressing fuss, but will just sit back, relax, enjoy the show and ride the waves to their demise.

- end -

Valerie Solanas is one of the greatest provocateurs of all time.

treeship 2, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 02:20 (eight years ago)

The book is a sort of masterpiece — deadly serious but still deeply ironic. The irony is, I guess, that the hyperbole is true? I also appreciate her way of presenting a radical, strucutral critique in this extremely dorect, vernacular language. Sometimes I think radicals choose to write in an academic idiom to leave themselves spacd to disavow their boldest claims. Not Solanas.

I admire her as a literary artist and a writer who channeled the madness if the 60s. I don’t support shooting people though and I am also not down with cutting up men, being one myself.

treeship 2, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 02:25 (eight years ago)

*the hyperbole is true from her standpoint. I obviously don’t stand by her arguments

treeship 2, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 02:29 (eight years ago)

I really dislike the iconification of this attempted murderer - I'm sure plenty of other murderers would be happy to dress up their crimes in right-on provocateur politics if it'd get 'em a certain kinda shine but I'm pretty sure we shouldn't help them out in their cause
