Why do people leave ILX for good?

I have found myself missing some old posters, and really can't imagine why anyone would just leave and literally never come back.

I don't approve of any one person being singled out in a poll. even a Cardiacs fan.

scott seward, Saturday, 24 February 2018 20:48 (seven years ago)

altho I literally did drive someone off ILX last year and still feel shitty about it :(

imago, Saturday, 24 February 2018 20:48 (seven years ago)

Voted 'demands of career' although I don't really have a career, just a job. I haven't posted on ILX much in the last 2-3 years because of it.

I really don't see myself ever leaving ILX.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 11 May 2020 01:47 (five years ago)

And indeed, this August -- three months away -- ILX is officially twenty years old.

Whoa, this is weird, in my mind I'm a new ILXor but it seems I've been posting for ... three-quarters of the entire history of the site?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 11 May 2020 03:21 (five years ago)

thought I started posting as "uh" in 2004 (which I'm not proud to admit), horrified to realize I posted here under my government name 10 times in 2003. which I didn't know until 5 minutes ago.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Monday, 11 May 2020 03:23 (five years ago)

sorta kills the point of the big goodbye post when you claim ta-nehisi coates was a seminal ilxor

℺ ☽ ⋠ ⏎ (✖), Monday, 11 May 2020 03:30 (five years ago)

I recently ran into one of TNC's posts while doing an ilx search on an unrelated purpose. Surprised me to see the name used in a year prior to TNC becoming well known. It was articulate, pointed, but nothing deathless, much like your somewhat above-average ilx post.

Otm. TNC posted a handful of posts, addressing one particular topic, no more. This seems like name-dropping for the sake of it. At least Jimmy the Mod awaited the return of his loved ones en publique.

You owe us nothing, Yelp, and feeling out of touch with everyone here is as good a reason as any to leave, obviously. All the best.

Hey, let me drunkenly animate yr boats in about 25 to 60 days! (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 11 May 2020 06:50 (five years ago)

Might spend the 20th anniversary looking up TNC's ilx posts. They must've had a lot of wisdom in them for a lurker/occasional poster to remember them in his goodbye post 17 years later.

a couple years back someone made a poll of all of TNC's ilx posts, it was kinda weird

Doctor Casino, Monday, 11 May 2020 12:27 (five years ago)

I also joined up somewhere around 2004 or 2005 and still feel like I'm catching up.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 11 May 2020 12:36 (five years ago)

Any children-of-ILXors-turned-posters?

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 12:37 (five years ago)

My kid lurks on here at times and has voted in end of year polls

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 11 May 2020 12:40 (five years ago)

He was born in 2003, which was also roughly the time frame when I first joined, although my posting history suggests it was later. I must've lurked for a while.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 11 May 2020 12:42 (five years ago)

what happened in 04 that so many ppl seem to have found this place? That's when I got here but can't recall how.

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 11 May 2020 12:42 (five years ago)

I don't remember exactly how I found it. I was very active on the Stereolab forum around then, and that may well have been what led me here.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 11 May 2020 12:45 (five years ago)

I may have first heard about it through hipinion.

plus there were people making a living writing about music.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 11 May 2020 12:51 (five years ago)

I found Tom Ewing's Best singles of the 1990s some time in 2000, I think, and was reading Freaky Trigger for a while - my first ILX post was February 2001, though I probably lurked for a bit before then.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 11 May 2020 12:52 (five years ago)

i bought my first computer immediately following 9/11 after it became clear that physical media was too slow to keep up with the world. Plus the downloading. I found ILX a few months after.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 11 May 2020 12:54 (five years ago)

I joined in 2003 but only really lurked. I properly started posting in 2015 (I think). I don't post enough so always feel vaguely like I'm posting from 'outside the room' as it were. I get this with all forums, tbh.

My friend that posted here told me about Geir and how he said Schoenberg ruined music so I joined purely to wind him up about it

I want this to be a true story

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:12 (five years ago)

Hey Geir, I know you still drop by every now and then. What's less musical in your opinion, twelve-tone serialism or rhythm for rhythm's sake?

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 13:15 (five years ago)

“The return to the board of noted musico-phrenologist geir” may yet be my answer to thread q so steady on pom

― Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Monday, May 11, 2020 9:12 AM bookmarkflaglink

Lol it totally is. The first post under my gov't name was me ribbing him for it. I didn't realize the dude very rarely responded to barbs so I lost interest, came back a year later to talk rap and metal.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:20 (five years ago)

Schoenberg? I thought it was James Brown who ruined music?

Papa's Got a Brand New Tone Row

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 13:25 (five years ago)

I started posting in 2005? no idea if I lurked before that, probably not for long if I did. I do feel like a new poster, though I've met a people off board which makes me feel more like an insider.

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:33 (five years ago)

get up get into it get inverted and retrogade

mark s, Monday, 11 May 2020 13:35 (five years ago)

I once started an 'end of music' Pandora station based solely on the initial inputs of James Brown and Schoenberg. Geir is a good sort, though; some time ago, I reminded him of some of his earlier ILM pronouncements and he lolled

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:45 (five years ago)

I like Geir, I think he drops by here from time to time. Some weird opinions, but a good guy.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:46 (five years ago)

So he's not an actual phrenologist? I'mma need a citation, wins.

mark s, Monday, 11 May 2020 14:23 (five years ago)

I said musico-phrenologist which is not an actual thing: I was not being literal

Microbes oft teem (wins), Monday, 11 May 2020 14:28 (five years ago)

Ah, my bad. I parsed the hyphen as an 'and' instead of a metaphorical qualifier.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Monday, 11 May 2020 15:58 (five years ago)

I learned about google on my first professional job, which lasted from 2000 to late 2003. I feel fairly certain I encountered ILX during that time as well, but it seems too early given my posting history.
