I'm 99% sure that Cumberbatch and Hugh Laurie have the same voice coach teaching them how to speak american, and the end result is neither really sounds american but they do sound like each other

Trying to imagine Benedict Cumberbatch attempting a UK regional accent and can't imagine Benedict Cumberbatch attempting a UK regional accent.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Monday, 12 March 2018 15:18 (seven years ago)

everyone has a regional accent

It's still fairly common to see British people listing "neutral accent" on their voice-acting CVs but obvs this is a regional accent.

However, i have been told that there is a "generic American" accent that is basically impossible to pin down to any one place, though idk how true that is.

it's basically a midwestern accent--like Ohio, Indiana, Missouri. Even that accent has its own eccentricities if you squint.

piper at the gates of d'awwww (voodoo chili), Monday, 12 March 2018 15:44 (seven years ago)

is Estuary English a neutral accent?

calzino, Monday, 12 March 2018 15:45 (seven years ago)

i just remembered that benedict cumberbatch was julian assange in assange!: the musical - wonder how that plays nowadays

I think broadcasters are taught to sound like somebody from Ohio

nah, i'd say the 'neutral' english accent is maybe more like a less ostentatious rp?

her accent is unique! i don't know why she sounds slightly australian to me but she does. she grew up in cherry hill, new jersey and then moved to the u.k. as a kid. maybe that gives you a unique hybrid voice. she does good amurrican farmgirl anyway.

mark s, Monday, 12 March 2018 16:20 (seven years ago)

Only a total tit like Schnabel would want such a smug Oldman portrayal of himself like that with such a shit accent!

calzino, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:49 (seven years ago)

ddl comes from such posh luvvie stock(maternal granddad Ealing bigwig, dad a former poet laureate) no wonder he can't be arsed working anymore, he's got poetry to write!

calzino, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:51 (seven years ago)

I'm sure Gary Oldman's been good in something but I've never seen it.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Monday, 12 March 2018 17:57 (seven years ago)

Prick Up Your Ears is pretty ace, but it's not all about his performance.

calzino, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:58 (seven years ago)

he's better than tricky in the fifth element

mark s, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:58 (seven years ago)

High praise. I suppose he's not bad in PUYE.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Monday, 12 March 2018 18:00 (seven years ago)

wait are people suggesting his american accent has been good in anything? it hasn't, it's always very bad

mark s, Monday, 12 March 2018 18:03 (seven years ago)

Tricky in the Fifth Element is a lot better than Eddie Izzard in the '98 Avengers movie.

calzino, Monday, 12 March 2018 18:06 (seven years ago)

Over my dead body you will.

Gary Oldman admits that his regular accent is so weird now that he had to have a dialogue coach for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

trishyb, Monday, 12 March 2018 18:08 (seven years ago)

"i would like to sound exactly like alec guinness in tinker, tailor, soldier, spy but be able to say without blushing that i had never listened to his performance"

mark s, Monday, 12 March 2018 18:09 (seven years ago)

charlie hunnam going to start a fight itt

the poster's anxiety at the suggested ban (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 12 March 2018 18:23 (seven years ago)

idk i always thought his american accent was not great

piper at the gates of d'awwww (voodoo chili), Monday, 12 March 2018 18:27 (seven years ago)

charlie hunnam's american accent is inextricably linked to the specific tone of voice. he can do multiple tones in his own accent, but he only can do the calm growling thing in american

mh, Monday, 12 March 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

i did enjoy his OTT accent in Leon. and his performance. which was a ham sandwich delight.

scott seward, Monday, 12 March 2018 19:18 (seven years ago)

you see, we are fighting now
