House buying in england dud or dud?

The house I had an offer accepted on two and a half months ago has just been taken off the market, just as the house i'm renting has had an offer accepted and the landlord wants us out by december.

So please, tell me your horror stories of house buying in england (or anywhere else for that matter) so I don't feel so angry and miserable.

I know this is comletely self indulgent, but I've got PMT and this has really f****d me off.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 1 November 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh poor Vicky. At least your estate agent isn't called Crook & Blight (prominent in the West Country and South Wales).

i cant even get a secure enough job with which to put a £3000 deposit down on a rat-infested cupboard in Hoxditch Village so dont talk to me about buyin houses!

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no Vicky that's terrible.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 1 November 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

1/19th of the property we just bought is owned by a FAMOUS AUSTRIAN NEWSCASTER who refused to come to signing because she's too FAMOUS, then, when lackies were sent to her house, refused to sign (because the starstruck realtor made ridiculous promises to the newscaster). I think in the end the lying realtor caughed up an extra €700 or so to get her to sign. This weekend we're going down there to see if the folks living in this tiny cabin have actually moved out.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 1 November 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Every so often there's something in the news about how good the scottish system is, and how awful the english system is, and how it should change, but IT NEVER DOES! I'm going to be £400+ (well me and my dad) out of pocket at least, (not including how much it's going to cost to put stuff in storage and get a short term let and move twice etc.) and it sucks.

I'm going to get very drunk indeed tonight, and RAWK out!

or not.

Colin, your new property has a tiny cabin on it? Sounds very nice!

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate famous people that are cunts. Just because everyone knows who you are, it does not make you some sort of demigod.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to hear this - I remember you posted about this originally and I said it sounded dodgy. Basically everything I said before is true -everyone associated with house-selling (solicitors, estate agents, surveyors) is a crooked bastard and you have to get down to their level to succeed. Even when you do, there's nothing you can do about fuckwits who take their houses off the market like this. What the system needs is a system of legally-binding time-limits and penalty clauses which punish tyrekickers and wasters.

I could bore everyone rigid for days about house buying horrors, although I've got a few good ones about how to get your own back on gazumpers and crooked estate agents, too. I might post some if I get time.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The Scottish system is much simpler, still stressing as hell but at least once an offer is accepted thats you, all you have to worry about it sorting out your posessions.

Fuzzy Wuzzy (Madam Plinky), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Just so it's clear, the famous Austrian newscaster is not the lovely Ingrid Turnher (I know you're all relieved). There's no way I would have allowed her to avoid meeting me. K-rowr.

Vicky -- yes, it's gorgeous. We had been saving up to buy an apartment here in Frankfurt, but as Frankfurt is full of ex-pats from London, real estate prices here are freakin' goofy, so we got the property near Vienna (where the real estate market has absolutely tanked) as an investment/summer/maybesomedaywe'llputahousehere place.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no, bad luck Vicky! Most un-RAWK.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm really sorry to hear that too. good luck with finding somewhere new. perhaps down the line you'll find a great place and be glad the this one didn't work out (i am now officially my mum).

angela (angela), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Terrible to hear! Right now I'm facing a situation where I might have to move after the first of the year, and I'm seriously pondering house buying options, or at least condos or a townhouse. It isn't the easiest of tasks and your story just makes me worry about what might happen here! Hope everything improves for you and that there's a bit of karmic retribution that'll happen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

What a shame! < HUGS > (I have the PMT too today, and I think any more tales of injustice and general crapness would have me in a righteously angry but tearful puddle on the floor...)

Archel (Archel), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

1/19th of the property we just bought is owned by a FAMOUS NEWSCASTER

is it Kent Brockman?

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

nah, he won the lottery remember?

chris (chris), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

that oughta learn his bigshot sister at CNN

blueski, Friday, 1 November 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

That's terrible Vicky - you have my sympathy, and indeed empathy. It would make me too miserable to go through the trouble I have been having since about March. I am back at square one again, again.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 1 November 2002 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
Agghhhhhhhh

I'm jinxed.

it's happened again!

and the estate agent, Neil at central, at walthamstow, knew about it last thursday and cancelled my surveyor, without telling me! And then had the audacity to break the news to me today and tell me he'd only known for an hour!

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

hello future Googlers, that would be Central Estate Agency on Hoe Street in Walthamstow, his name is Neil, he sits near the window, wave at him if you ever pass. And give him our regards, the twunt.

chris (chris), Thursday, 21 November 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I was quite keen on living on Hoe Street. Literally, not figuratively - but then again...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 21 November 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh don't get me wrong, Hoe street rocks, it's got some lovely food shops and great all night booooze shops.

It's just the central estate agency on Hoe street Walthamstow that most certainly does not rock.

chris (chris), Thursday, 21 November 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

how amny times do I have to write about central estate agency on Hoe street to get this thread to come up on google?

chris (chris), Thursday, 21 November 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I just meant I liked the sound of the name. I wanted to be able to say that I live on Hoe Street.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 21 November 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Ouch. That's nasty. :(

Oh, and apparently it boosts the google rankings if you link to it from another page...

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 21 November 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Just waste his time with bogus requests for viewings. I suggest we all ring up tomorrow. As I said upthread all estate agents are crooks.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 21 November 2002 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

What's the latest advice on this then?

We have a okay deposit and people are willing to lend to us, fixed for 2 years, but are we going to get screwed when we come to renegotiate?

Jarlrmai, Friday, 16 January 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

what about renting to buy?

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
