Kill it before its choking weeds grow up around your heart

That reminds me of when I first heard that sentiment thirty years ago, a simpler time.

Kind of want to post that Nick Mullin rant about this but there’s probably something problematic in it since he says something problematic like every 2 mins.

death to nostalgia more like death to smoochy yoooooo that was a good movie
― sleepingbag, Friday, 30 March 2018 01:29 (seven years ago)
Death to the marketing of nostalgia. Everyone should feel free to nostalge to their heart's content within the comfort of their home and, if desired, with a consenting partner.

people are going to have to tone down the daily apocalyptic fantasies if there is to be any hope of conquering the beast nostalgia

My father's fists raining down upon me, the bin men, the minions, those were the days

Good point. Nostalgia depends on fond memories. In their absence, I'm okay with the non-horrible familiar.

Memories are fine and dandy with me, even though they tend to get a bit hazy and drop out details of pain, boredom or struggle. Nostalgia is accepting that sweet rot that happens in your memory, skewing it even further toward unreality, then using it to intensify your hatred of the present -- which amounts to an illness.

Let's not forget the word derives from Greek roots nostos (journey home) and algos (pain).
― startled macropod (MatthewK), Friday, 30 March 2018 04:02 (seven years ago)
I always remember sir Alex Ferguson saying on a tv interview "nostalgia is an illusion". Unfortunately this means that about 80% of my life is non existent.

We feel nostalgia for a place simply because we've lived there, whether we lived well or badly scarcely matters. The past is always beautiful. So, for that matter, is the future. Only the the present hurts, and we carry it around like an abscess of suffering, our companion between two infinities of happiness and peace.
Houellebecq is a terrible person but he's sort of right here, only often the future also seems like an even bigger fucking nightmare than the present. At least you have something to work with if the future is some kind of utopia!

I say meme it, attribute it to some incongruous famous person, and toss it onto Facebook. I wouldn't mind, as long as you also post it on the 'hateable' FB memes thread, so I could see it.

I have a good feeling about this thread, it harkens back to classic ILX discussions of yore, as warm and familiar as the crackle of a vintage LP.
